Being an agnostic, I regard Hamza Yusuf as a very insightful and compassionate man. When he says to the Muslim community _"How much of our humanity will we lose before we wake up?" This applies to all of humanity not just those in his congregation. Indeed, we are asleep in our waking state. As Dr. Arthur Deikman said _"So habitual is the trance of ordinary life that one could say that human beings are a race that sleeps and awakens, but does not awaken fully. Because half-awake is sufficient for the task we customarily do, few of us are aware of the dysfunction of our condition."_ And the dysfunction of our condition is precisely what Yusuf is passionately concerned about. He says, quite rightly, that the mass amount of information infiltrating our homes has a pervasive dehumanizing effect on the human mind by turning us into mindless slaves to all manner of consumption. It is so true! It is through the airwaves that we unwittingly become vulnerable to credulity, to myths and lies veiled as truth and we fail to realize the depth in which we are being deceived and manipulated psychologically by all manner of propaganda. Dr. Erich Fromm says that _Our conscious motivations, ideas, and beliefs are a blend of false information, biases, irrational passions, rationalizations, prejudices, in which morsels of truth swim around and give the reassurance, albeit false, that the whole mixture is real and true. The thinking process attempts to organize this whole cesspool of illusions according to the laws of logic and plausibility. This level of consciousness is supposed to reflect reality; it is the map we use for organizing our life. This false map is not repressed. What is repressed is the knowledge of reality, the knowledge of what is true. If we ask, then: What is unconscious? the answer must be: Aside from irrational passions, almost the whole of knowledge of reality. The unconscious is basically determined by society, which produces irrational passions and provides its members with various kinds of fiction and thus forces the truth to become the prisoner of the alleged rationality_ And so, just as Dr. Fromm is urging us to wake up from our repressed knowledge, Yusuf is asking the Muslim community to do the same. But, as I said, we ALL need to wake up to our complacent madness.

A student from the Middle East introduced me to Hamza Yusuf and I was quite astonished that much of what he said ties in with humanistic psychologists Dr. Erich Fromm, Dr. Karen Horney, Abraham Maslow, and Arthur Deikman. I believe that all religions have a psychological component that, unfortunately, gets lost in translation. However, and unlike many spiritual teachers, Hamza Yusuf has a way to bring it front and center. It's been said by some spiritual teachers that "proper translation bring about proper transformation" The translation Hamza Yusuf provides i.e. his message, has a sense urgency, of immediacy, since he believes that too many Muslims have lost their way by adopting the Western way of life. So true. There is much of that does us great harm and we are all losing our way. Anyway, I have yet to read Yusef's book, "Purification Of The Heart" I also look forward to listening to his many lectures and if I have any questions I'll certainly ask you.

There is a difference between modesty and shyness. Islam praises Modesty and respectfulness. But we shouldn't be shy to seek knowledge or to help anyone. We should be respectful (modest) towards others but we shouldn't be shy to ask questions or shy in dealings with others.
Why can't you all just leave the Jews alone...why must your truth obviate everyone else's? Isn't it enough to have a beautiful religion and find meaning in that? Why must it be the ONLY true faith? Either we all learn to love one another AND our differences or we're doomed . If God is just -- and I believe that God is absolutely just -- then the just forgive and choose love above all else.
I hear plenty of lecture in Islam. but none of them give me more pleasure than sheikh Hamza Yusuf's one. May Allah rise his station!
