I have had success mixing gear oil with acetone to lubricate leaf springs. The acetone acts as a carrier, then evaporates leaving the oil behind. Thanks for taking your time making these videos, it brings back a lot of great VW memories.

To stop the rot, i've never found anything beats good old Waxoyl....superb stuff, doesn't just cover existing rust, it kills it, then sets as a tough wax, used it every few years on my old 1962 Land Rover...still has a rust free chassis which is remarkable in itself

An old mechanic (from the 40s and 50s told me to put a quart of kerosene in the crankcase and drive it for 40 or 50 miles, then change the oil and filter. It totally cleaned my 1958 Ford 292 engine!
I actually dit it twice, and every part of the engine was spotless!

I really enjoyed watching you, more or less, restore this beauty. By watching you work on vw's in general, I'm getting an education in vw's . I drove one for a couple of years when I was in high school, it was a blast to drive. Those are great in snow. I enjoy all the videos you make. I'm still in the process of watching them all..

Don't know if you've ever tried this. But way back when I was a teenager I was told by an ol timer that if I had a sludgey engine I should just replace a quart of oil with a quart of ATF during an oil change. Then after 100 miles or so change the oil again. The detergent in the ATF cleans out the sludge.
I've used that trick on a few old engines with good luck.
Great work on getting that Ghia back on the road.

Great job--love your videos. On those door/interior cards, here's what I do: before you put the clips on the card, put a little of that chain oil around each of the rubber cup lips. Then put the panel in place without clips, and press it against each rubber cup. This marks where the clip point needs to line up. Saves much aggravation. (I've had a Type III Fastback, several Beetles, a Squareback, and a Super).

Top advice. So many restos just get their strips smashed straight back onto the body. Makes me cringe. As well as protecting from the elements, anything oil- or wax-like in the holes also protects the paint that's just been newly applied (and so it is still soft for weeks, unless 2K lacquered (but even then, still no excuse 🙂)) from being chipped off as soon as it's re-installed. Amazing how many times you never see that.

With regards to your fuel lines, we are finding out the braided line (even the German made stuff), is not holding up well to ethanol laced fuels. We used to not use hose clamps either, but now find them necessary. Sometimes the hose goes soft and squishy, sometimes rock hard and cracks. Also, make sure your brass fittings to the fuel pump and carb are tight, as after many decades they are starting to come loose with disastrous consequences. We want to see you safely driving that car for a long time!

Great series! Like the tip about using the bar oil. On my Ghia, I tucked the plastic sheet inside the door at the bottom like it was done originally on my model (1968). It was a lot more difficult, but it channels the water outside through the drain holes instead of inside between the door and the plastic. But I don't take mine out in the rain; so I guess it really didn't matter. LOL

Good tips with 'winterizing' with bar and chain oil. Being a cheap broke bloke I use Cooking oil or Corn oil. Mixed 50/50 with Isopropyl alcohol makes it runny and wicks upwards on the metal. For doors that still have the covers on them I use a Turkey Butter Syringe and inject in the door drain holes at the bottom. Squirt upwards it runs down and up. I like to do it on the hottest days in July. The Isopropyl alcohol evaporates and leaves the corn oil very sticky. Wipe of excess as it drains out the next day or hard to get off later. I use a sponge around body seams at wheel wells, it seeps into them. So far no rust on a 2002 Ford Taurus anywhere. I use a power washer and add it to the soap dispenser and a Ryobi Under car washer, has wheels and easy to spray under the car. Water drips away leaving the Corn oil. I was looking forward to the quarter panel replacement, I guess that will be later.

I think what would work great for the door liner is a product we use in building construction called Super Six. It's a vapour barrier you put over your insulated stud wall before you put up your drywall. It's clear and 6 mil thick. It is almost as thick as the stuff they put on new cars and trucks.

  • @rickcrooker2407
    @rickcrooker2407 5 лет назад +1

Suggest hitting that rust with a rust converter before applying the chain oil. Brand I prefer if Ospho which has the viscosity of water, can be sprayed, dipped or brushed on, and converts the iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate which is a hard, air-tight coating. Applying the chain oil on top of that will provide even better protection against future rust issues. Ospho isn't expensive and a quart goes a long way. There are many more brands on the market that do basically the same thing.

Another great completed project Daren, those inner door panels really clean and finish off the interior. Can't wait to see you driving the finished product once winter is over. I didn't realize VW engines didn't use a paper/cardboard style oil filter.
    A handy tip...
House 6 mill vapour barrier plastic is much thicker than garbage bag plastic plus it is UV resistant if you ever have to add a plastic lining to the interior doors of a future car.
Lilly's cameo at the end made this video even better. :)
    Thumbs up! 👍🏼

Thank you for further explaining and illustrating your bar oil rust proofing method Mustie. I have spent hundreds of dollars on products such as POR-15 or cold galvanizing spray compounds to prevent or stop rust on interior or trouble water holding areas with good results but ending up with a empty wallet. I will give your method a try on my most recent restoration a 1980 Jeep CJ-5 and maybe it will hold up under Michigans high road salt applications in winter time conditions. Great content as always. So good to see this car given a new life. I am just so glad you didn't sell out to the TV, they would have stolen your soul Mustie. If Lily could talk I think she would agree on that. My golden lab/retriever likes shed time with me and he keeps me grounded. Thanks for all the time and effort you give making series like this and letting us come along for the ride.

Looking good now. We used to do the trick with the window winder at the dealerships. Customers would come in and say the windows are dropping on there own! So we'd move the handle to stop it happening.
Oh & My dog makes the same noise when I rub his ears too. Must be a dog thing. Great vids as ever all the best. Pete. UK.

Garbage bags work just fine (so long they aren't the perishable kind, the ones that stink really, really bad). I have one on my range rover that's a beat up outside work horse with no registration, basically expecting it to die at any moment. And so far no issues with it after one and a half years since i glued them on with double sided sticky tape.

I wish that we could find affordable air cooled vw cars to repair in the uk. I’ve had six beetles and a late bay over the years, love them, but way out of my price range these days. Your videos are great!

If I remember right when I worked for GM they used that grey putty/"DUM DUM" to hold tar paper to door to prevent water intrusion. As always the MASTER OF WHAT OTHERS WOULD HAVE TRASHED DID HIS USUALLY EXCELLENT JOB...

I think that car is really sharp considering where you started. Another beauty back on the road where is belongs. Excellent series. And a cameo from Lilly is awesome a welcome sight! Cheers.

Love Lily!! Also love your channel, thanks!! For me, the biggest two mistakes that VW made was not equipping the Karmann Ghia with a larger, more powerful motor. Imagine these with the six cylinder Porsche that came with some of the 914's... Even adding dual Webers and getting a freer flowing exhaust gives it a bit more excitement. The other? They should have made the 'New Beetle' a rear engine car... Would have been an instant and long lasting classic... Instead, they did the same thing to the car they did to the Ghia by putting it on a Bug pan they just made it look good but stuck it on a Jetta pan... shame.

I think you did the right thing doing all the issues without taking the whole the car apart, - being able to still drive it a n d do all the improvements is an excellent choice !
And the outcome turned out to be very successful without spending too much money and time !
Thank you for sharing all your efforts..!

l see it all the time, so many projects that get taken apart then never put back together as the owner gets overwelmed, but its a good way to buy them as they are cheap and come with lots of new parts,

Amazing what you've done in the time for very little outlay but most of the value is in the wrenching. Love to have a Karmann Ghia as my daily driver
