- we are in the process of fixing up a 1965 vw karman ghia that has no engine. lets dig one out of our stash and see if we can bring it back to life. these were sitting in a damp basement for 30 years with an unknown condition, one of them will make it back into this low dollar driver, THIS IS NOT A RESTORATION, just having fun on the cheap. relax, grab a snack and enjoy wrenching in the garage with me.

Slow-mo footage was outstanding!!
Sounds like a giant stationary engine in an old factory starting up!
Back fire reflexes like a cat. A old cat but still a cat! Another great Vlog
Its the victory laugh I look forward to after the cold start!
Yeah and the " Ha !" of victory. We know our Mustie1, are'nt we !?
It was almost evil manic laughter after all the flames!
(I made the same noise when I got my newly acquired 37 year old motorbike to fire up the first time, carbs were completely bunged up, but a mixture of excessive choke and a squirt of fuel does wonders).
Steve Evans Wow nice Steve!
Not so much a laugh, as a cackle!
Cackle of a mad scientist.
... who needs a TV when there is great watching to be had with programming like this... very self-assured guy... inspiring.
Gotta respect a man that can start an engine that hasn't started in over 30 years!
You’ve got nerves of steel. Didn’t even flinch when it backfired through the carb while holding a bottle of fuel in your hand
All these years and the “it runs” laugh from Mustie never gets old.
A dragon stirring from it's rest, coughs, splutters and finally breathes the fire of it's youth. Marvelous.
There's nothing like the Mustie happy dance when one of these old beasts comes alive! Loved the flame throwing slow mo footage!
Mustie1 comes to your house , buys a Ghia rotting away in a tent for years & then does a series on bringing the car back to life . I am blessed ! Great video on getting an old Vw engine fired . I will be doing the same with a 1968 Karmann Ghia project as you fueled the Ghia fire again ! Thank you Mustie1 👍
thanks again jason
It is fun to see pieces and parts dusted off and turned into something. Once the bugs are worked out it will be one of those cars that people would love to own....yet weeks before it was all stagnant and in deep storage. Whoda thunk
@@mustie1 I have watched quite a few of your videos before (mostly the old start and police cart restoration videos), and I'm sure you've said your name before, but you kinda strike me as a Philip, Steven, Michael, or Larry...😀
@@mustie1 Sorry buddy, I didn't intend for that comment to sound ignorant. Hope it didn't.
5150mxVW cool
I have been hooked for a while.....kids got up this morning and found me watching this oldest said to the youngest “you might as well go back to bed, breakfast will have to wait cause dad is watching that miracle Mechanic again”
"Old School Wrenching", can't beat it, even with a big stick. Don't know why, but this kind of stuff makes me smile with joy for the rest of the day. Thank You Sir.
I owned a 63 1200 Ghia for 18 years. Loved that car. 6volt electrics were never a problem except lighting not good. Miss that car.
You know it's going to be a good morning when you wake up to a mustie will it run video !
watching that thing shakin' away and bangin' and flamin' out was priceless...was fully expecting the whole thing to go kaboom and see Mustie being launched off into a low lunar trajectory and still laughing all the time !
That slow motion bit was awesome!
Goodness gracious great balls of fire!
It's like watching an ancient aircraft radial engine coming to life
Timothy Harrison that's what I was thinking also. Watching Mikey McBryan's DC-3s on a cold start
The only thing that would have made it better if the lights were off!
Looked like he was trying to start a Messerschmitt Bf 109 on the Russian front.
that's kinda what it sounds like
Loved the slow mo at the end!
Yay It LIVES !!!! love to watch you get these old beauty's running. Thanks for sharing with us :)
The audio on that slow mo was the best! Like some old rock and roll intro!
I have been accused of destroying starters many times. Some engines come back quicker than others. Great job!
l get that all the time, but cant remember the last time l broke one,
I burned up a starter cranking an engine for a solid minute or more, the engine would stall if the RPM dropped below 1,000, it had a huge vacuum leak (hole in the block I didn't know about), and I figured I'd be replacing it anyway, I was only 3 miles from home so I just kept at it. Love your videos!
So long as the engine keeps turning at the "normal" cranking rate you can leave them run a fair while but not if they slow right down or stall - ask me how I know...
Ain't you got something to tow???
I use 24 volts on a 12 volt starters trying to start diesels in - 40 Celsius. I have released the magic smoke a few times. LOL
Slow-mo was awesome.
I like those older motors. Pure mechanics
I love the slowmo at the end.
Bitter cold outside, everybody still asleep, and a Mustie video. Sweet!
It's a good combination
Posted 1hr ago, already had 8k views! Good to see so many volks enjoying a sunday morgen with Mustie! Had a good chuckle at the lightning fast reflexes in the slo-mo. Reminds me of a old movie line... Og say "Fire good!"
nothing more satisfying than watching mustie start an old engine
seeing old iron coming back to life is one of my favorite things ever ! Musti you are the Dr Frankenstien of old engines " It's alive " It's alive ! "
Laying on the couch feeling miserable with man flu then up pops Mustie with a video. Perfect! Cheers pal...
Man Flu!!! the virus is in a tux? LMAOL feel better
JO MANGEEE thanks pal, will do.!
I would love to see a full engine restoration.
Glad I found this channel a few weeks ago
It's always a good day when you have FLAMES thanks Mustie 👏😄
Always like even before watching 👍👍👍👍
"Sserial Number" :D I love your videos, especially on this grey and rainy sunday over here in northern Germany. Sitting on my couch and watching you as you repair old engines, feels like i'm in your garage and looking over your shoulder. Keep up the great work! :)
That mad scientist laugh when it first ran. Twas perfect. Thanks for another great flat motor video.
Nothing quite like hearing Mustie laugh on the first start. Just love it.
I learn something new every video .Thank you
You are a godo mechanic mustie. Been following you for a year now. I bee a mech all my life at one point a professional. I still learned a lot from you even know I been doing it for 20+ years. Thansk and kepp the vids coming...
Good? I am a good mechanic. I'd say mustie1 is easily an excellent mechanic. The only thing different I would probably do, due to electronics training, is buy a rebuild kit for the alternator/starter and do it myself to save a few bucks. He's probably got extras around so he probably won't see any point in doing that. Myself, I know solid electrics in a car that is in a snow & winter belt makes a huge difference in reliability.
love the pace of these last videos!!!!!!!!
Loved the slo mo at the end. Classic
I enjoyed your procedure on engine startup. You made sure the engine had a chance of survival prior to taking the time to dig deep into the rest of the components. I can see this is not your first rodeo. Ha Ha
Makes me want to go out and start up my 1966 Ford Cobra.
John
Nothing like a mustie video to start my day.
Got to hand it to you Mustie1, the last couple of minutes with that engine kicking over in slo mo was very cool! Love that sound of resurrection.
loved the slow-mo at the end
It was just like the old movie "The Flight of the Phoenix" at one point :)
Thats amazing, the old beast wakes from a long sleep.
A cross between a steam engine/snorting bull and a dragon :-D
Spectacular slo-mo at the end
So much fun in such a small package. These old VW engines are tough as nails. Keep up the good work Mustie1 THANKS!!
#vwlife! Keeping these vintage Volkswagens alive.!!!
And this is why we have a parts stash!
He refers to it as the "hoard" lol
@@VWLifeVW Ha! That's awesome.
Nice work Mustie. It has been around 25 years since I did some real wrenching on cars and I got a bit out of practice. Since watching your videos I decided to do some work on my sister's 1960's classic Ford. It hadn't been on the road for at least 12 years and was sitting in her damp basement under cover. A mechanic and a family and two family members had both tried and failed to get it running properly.
I fitted a new carb kit, battery, points, a coil and added new non ethanol fuel and a fuel filter. I freed up the engine and added new oil and filter. Also replaced the thermostat and thermostat housing. Hearing it start after all those years was an amazing feeling. It still needs brake and wiring work as well as a new water pump so those are next on the list.
Last week it took a while to start as she is letting it sit again and I gave it a bit of a mixture adjustment. Now it starts first pop even after sitting for a week.
Having a major disability, chronic pain and some corresponding major depressive and suicidal episodes over the years, it has been a bit of a struggle to get motivated at times but thanks for giving me the inspiration and refresher course/education to actually start and achieve something.
Rocket man!!. Slo mo is the best! Loved it.
Brilliant just what i needed on a sunday in Scotland thank you sir for the video gr8 progress with this best thing on RUclips for sure 👑👑👏👏👏✌️✌️✌️✌️😁
yeah, i'm in cold, windy Edinburgh thinking of going outside.. mayby in 1/2 an hour or so
Big thanks to your friend, good video, one engine saved from the pile :)
Reminds me of my days working as a VW mechanic. Was most fun ever job in 20+ years!
Into the fire! Awesome slow motion action.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mustie! Love these videos!
Thanks Mustie1. Made my day again, lol.
James K. mine's too 😂especially when he got it to fire up with 🔥🔥
Love the almost cackling laugh when the engine came to life. Thumbs up from me.
Didn’t even flinch with backfire through intake! Impressive!
YES! I like it when you start vw engines!
Great videos , I believe you could fix just about anything.
Woooo! I love watching you play with old rusty junky motors that shoot flames! When it started breathing fire I literally cackled with delight! :D
The best part of a mustie cold start video is the mustie laugh!
Need to find a 1965 Porsche 356C engine for your Ghia. :-)
Awesome again! Can hardly wait till the next video.
Gota love Mustie1 running the VW engine out of wet basement to the engine stand spiting out FIRE !
Never thought I'd watch beetle engine starting in slow motion :) Thanks!
Good morning happy Sunday
Talk about a money shot ;) Smoke, fire, debris flying WOW!
An another good one Mustie.
Thank you!
Rod
Can't believe you got that old motor fired up, quite literally….. awesome.
Mustie1 alert while on RUclips! Yes! Greetings from Holland.
How’s things in Holland ?
of course it will run..mustie will make sure of it !"
clickbait title.. course it will run eventually... haha
I wish I understood what the heck you are doing.
Every time I read a "Will it RUN?" title from the Mustie1 channel I think to myself "Yes it will".
@@fillg same here
Dwayne Pipe lol.. 🤗😂😂
Haha love the slo-mo at the end :D
Mickey has left the building looks like a great way to spend the day on cleanup and rebuild
Some mice disliked this video.
Allen McKinney 7 gutless pricks who don’t bother to comment as to why they didn’t like it. Definitely not mice😆😆
Probably folks disappointed that it's not going to be a full on restoration. Or maybe just VW haters that are bored with the content? Or perhaps people who blew their speakers out when the motor finally fired up? I'm not sure how you can dislike any video where you pull an engine out of long term storage and get it to fire up without any major work. That's the kinda stuff that got me to subscribe in the first place.
triggered.
@@bluedimitri ok rat's then.
I thought it was just people who hadn't enough coffee and clicked the wrong button.
I enjoyed that! Thanks for sharing ☺️
Love to see an old engine come to life like that.
Mustie, you are like the wizard when Toto pulls back the curtain!
I know the drill now for bringing back the flat 4 to life....Okay, Im prepared to admit it, Im hooked....Please dont try and help me...lol
Good morning☺️
I'd give 50 thumbs up if I could. This perfect balance of know how and basic backyard wrenching is what got me started watching from the beginning. All then rest is very appreciated bonus material for me. Like chocolate sprinkles on top of your favorite sundae.
It looked like a fire breathing dragon. Good job!
Were there people in the water in January? That's hardcore!!!
There is no hate against you I love Your Vids
Another terrific video. Thanks Mustie!
I was just writing "I hope you have some ventilation in that garage" when you opened the door. Looks like one of those old movies where they're starting up old WWI airplanes.
Good size pond. I use to own a 66 VW with thirty four horse power. I owned a 53 in Germany, it had idiot sticks on the door post. VW were fun to drive! Forget the part about freezing to death. Come to think of it, I traded a bug once for a dune buggy, never did put it on the road
Idiot sticks on the door....not familiar with that Mt man, plz explain
kennycybertron1 In Germany after the war, the Germans were not the greatest drivers to say the least. They didn’t pay a lot of attention to brake or signal lights. If you were making a turn, they were liable to pass you on either side, causing lots of fender benders. So the started installing a signal light on a bar that mounted inside the post behind the door. When you gave a signal, this bar about 7” long swung out with for or five lights on it that flashed, indicating your intentions. They were nicknamed “idiot sticks”
He is referring to semaphores, they pop out of the b pillar and light up but don’t flash like a turn signal.
1500cc drag race competition Sir
sneaks in with a set of 88MM piston/cylinders and heads for 11:1 ratio..... think anyone would notice the 1680cc....
there's always someone that spoils the fun =p
Firing on all five cylinders, I like it. The ending footage is always appreciated, too. Thanks.
Looking forward to the next one !!😊
So happy on a Sunday mornin!
yesssss ,... i was hoping to see this today
sweet
edit:
too bad you sold the porsche engine , would have been awesome in that car :P
Another Sunday and another cup of coffee. You know it's Mustie time. Thanks for making this video and bringing us along!
Sunday and a fresh Mustie. With coffee can't beat it.
I was hoping for an LS1 swap LOL
Ls swap the world lol
Turbo Subaru
Love the vids man keep it up
Oh, the memories that brings back with an old 1600 motor when I was younger than today. Great work mustie, enjoying every single pop and bang 😉
23:38 the chuckle of victory!
