The unfortunate truth behind why this didn't make that much money is because LEGO Movie came out around the same time and, when you have a film that makes a perfect cg replica of stop-motion animation, it affected the actual stop-motion market at the time.
At the least, the stop-motion medium isn't dead and seems to be coming back a bit. LAIKA is still working on stop-motion films with "Wildwood" being their next project plus both Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" and Henry Selick's "Wendell & Wild" are finally coming out soon on Netflix.

    A few notes:
The silent, unresponsive state Kubo's mother spends most of her time in is a real psychological phenomenon known as catatonia, which is where we get the term catatonic.
The giant skeleton was practical, a sixteen foot puppet that was held up by a crane iirc. The crew did interviews about shooting that scene specifically, I suggest you watch one because they're fascinating!
The song used during the credits, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, as sung by Regina Spektor, has made the very short list of songs I prefer the cover of to the original. If you didn't watch the credits and hear it, look it up, it's amazing and fits the movie beautifully!
Anyone who knows more facts, feel free to add!
Edit: I forgot they go over the skeleton scene in the credits, whoops

I randomly caught this movie when it came out. The theater was across my college and I had a few hours break in between classes so I went to kill some time. This was the ONLY showing that fit in that timeframe and man am I glad it was, I absolutely fell in love with this movie. Walked in knowing absolutely nothing about it and walked out so entertained/emotional lol I ended up skipping my night class. I remember going to Best Buy as soon as they opened to buy the Blu Ray the day it released. Loved the reaction! This movie is a gem, wish more people knew of it!

Laika feels like one of the last remaining studio's that still makes legit heartfelt stories with plenty of silence and dignity. Miyazaki is 81 so he doesn't have much more time left.

I think her general catatonic state during the day is exacerbated by the headwound, but not the primary cause. She IS a Star Goddess, after all, and I imagine they wouldn't have much agency during the day when they're on the surface and not in the sky. Plus it helps that her moments of lucidity come when it's most dangerous for them-nighttime-when there's the chance of being caught by her Father, the Moon King, or her sisters, fellow Stars.

The battles in this movie really are fantastic; the choreography, angles, music, they feel so grand and epic. The boat and the fortress scene in the theatre was just pure awesomeness

When Kubo is looking into the giant eye, he sees a vision of Monkey and his mother which is the first solid indication that Monkey IS his mother. Also, Charlize Theron did the voice for both Monkey and Kubo's mother. If they sounded different it is because Charlize is very skilled at making different voices.

Underappreciated (and under-reacted to) masterpiece. Laika has caught Henry Selick atop the stop motion world in my opinion. Very good reaction. Thank you!

Heh I'm an idiot. Laika and Henry Selick have worked together (e.g. Coraline); they're not mutually exclusive. My bad!

kubo’s voice actor is art parkinson, who played rickon stark (youngest stark sibling) in game of thrones. i was so surprised because he did an american accent so good. for a child to do that, especially one with an irish accent, is so crazy talented.

Wish you stuck around through the end credits. They show some Behind The Scenes, including the giant skeleton and how it works, as it was the worlds largest puppet used in a stop-motion film.

This movie was one of my son's favorite movies. It was playing every day at the children's hospital where he received treatment for his cancer in 2017. It will always remind me of him. Thank you for the wonderful reaction to a very special movie to me. I am a new fan of your channel and I am glad I discovered you.

38:26 In Western mythologies like Greece, immortals and mortals can mingle freely. It’s possible to be half immortal, and shed mortality when you die.
In Eastern like Japanese, the divine and mortal can’t overlap. You must shed your immortality to stay on the mortal plane, and lose even your memories of mortality to ascend/return.

7:58 Bruce Willis has aphasia, which is the inability to form words and sentences, its a form of brain damage similar too but not the same as Alzheimer's . Some young people who develop aphasia are able to recover with a lot of therapy, but with modern tech and accessibility Aphasia is not a terminal illness in the same way Alzheimer's is. Still heartbreaking though to see someone afflicted with it, especially someone who lived so publicly like Bruce Willis.

Fun fact: The design of The Moon Kings monster form is based off of an ancient, extinct fish. I can't recall the name of the fish however, sorry.

Hatred reinforces evil & justifies pain.
But hatred is a destructive force; it's toxic and anti-life.
Love reinforces life & supports continuance.
    Love is self-perpetuating.
Good vs evil is an immature perception, too often the narrative base for American interpretations. And 'good'/'evil' are totally subjective perceptions, though white culture (including European) seems convinced it's an objective thing. It's a value judgement, and an immature/simplistic one.
We should look at challenges in a way to find cooperation, to find win/win in any conflict. If everyone wins, there can be peace and growth.

I think the reason kubos mother was so unresponsive most of the time was that she was a child of the moon, and they were hiding from it. they couldnt go out at night at all, her source of power was cut off until kubo and her were found and she came out to defend him.
