    Although they spend the movie looking for weapons, Kubo actually defeats his grandfather with music, storytelling, and his link to the villagers. I saw the bit at the end as rewriting the grandfather's story. And if the villagers treat him like the kind, socially-connected person they say he is, might that help him actually become that?

    I totally recommend Paranorman by Laika as well.
    Unfortunately laika doesn’t make a lot of money for their movies, usually due to poor marketing. That said, the founder is connected familial (I think) with Nike. And Nike basically keeps the studio operating. One of the only good times nepotism actually caused good lol

    I think the point in the end was partially about changing stories (from the imperious and murderous Moon King to the grandfather everyone loves) and partially about the power of community. Grandfather wanted his family isolated and “safe” from humanity, Mom kept Kubo isolated and “safe” from her family- if not for Kubo risking himself to sneak out and bond with the village then his story really would have been over when Monkey and Beetle died. He would have had nothing left. And instead he had the support of all the people his previous stories brought together.

  • @amandawade7803
    @amandawade7803 2 года назад +32

    I love how the "blindness" thing and how it ties into the memory thing and how we live on, also ties into the opening narration. "If you look away, even for an instant, then our hero will surely perish."
    And, how Kubo took notice of the little things, paying attention to small things. Like having a meal with your family, knowing what your parents were like. There are so many times that we forget to take notice of these things, we forget to look at all those small beautiful things.
    I think the grandfather is a representation of how we are sometimes blind to those small but powerful moments. And, and when he became mortal he was suddenly able to see, and became reliant on the small stories from others.

    Imagine trying to make a stop motion film this beautiful and fluid back in the 1990s when the Nightmare Before Christmas released. It would have driven anyone insane. Thankfully with advancements in technology it's made these types of film a bit less tedious by letting studios mass produce various face templates. Still, it's a lot of work and only those truly committed to the art will push through to the end.

    fun fact that I love sharing about the creation of this, in the begining where it's Kubo's mom in the ocean it WAS mostly practical affects! they had a grid of metal bars that would move up and down like flowing water, and it gave that sort of geometric shape to the waves and how they were spaced! they added cg on top for the foam and the big waves and the details but the set up was still practical :) also the giant skeleton is one of, if not THE biggest stop motion puppet ever made!!

  • @ruffboimags

    the coolest thing about the CG is a lot of it was using textures and animations made from practical stop-motion elements that were then composited and enhanced with CG. Like, for the water there was a number of different physical things they put together to make it look the way it does. Which is part of why it blends with the rest of the animation so well.

Now as a mortal with his sight returned, his grandfather could find a hero within himself.

    Another common take on the ending is Moon King is blind to the emotions of human kind, so by hitting him with the raw emotional blast of those stories they gave him and eye and this unlocked a human connection. He wanted to take Kubo's eyes to make him blind to the world because to him a god is above human emotion. By hitting him with the magic formed from people's memories it gave Moon King an eye. This in turn gave him a human form. The villagers then used this as a way to start over and give him a blank slate. A god that was blind to the world was more or less given human form and now lives within it. People lied because they see that he really is a blank slate they could save. They hold no ill will so this stories are to give him a happy life. Moon King was never evil just misguided. By opening him up to the world they awakened a kind old man that was hidden deep within him.
