    I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.

    • @AnaGellaOpong
      @AnaGellaOpong 5 лет назад +60

      Yes they did. It was, i think, in the 1900s when a slimmer silhouette was preferred that the pockets got "eliminated" from the dresses.

      Yes. They were basically purses tied to the woman’s waist, and since there were so many ruffles in the skirts and petticoats; the woman would just stick her hand in between the splits and she would have a pocket! If you want more info, look up “getting dressed in the 18th century”

      Laura Ingalls Wilder talks about wearing hoop skirts in one of the later Little House books. She certainly did chores, but I don't think she wore the hoops while doing them. She did all of her chores in a corset though. They should have done that.

      Gwen Berlin Hoops were fashionable all over the US and Europe. They are largely associated with the south, but there were plenty of people wearing them who did not own slaves.

    • @foreverdead1248

    • @bethanbaker7066
      @bethanbaker7066 2 года назад +1

      Also in older garments they were actually sometimes completely separate pieces that were tied around the waist. My 18th century dress doesn't have them but I don't have the pocket pieces because my petticoat ties at the back with no slits at the side so I wouldn't be able to use them anyway. I do know however that other 18th century petticoat would be tied from the back around the front and then the front around the back leaving slits for the pockets.

    I love the members of lady like, but I wish someone would have shown them how to function in a hoop skirt. There is a certain way to sit, go to the bathroom, and get through tight spaces. And the functions for these are built into the design of the skirt! They would have had a much better time.
    Also these skirts would have had pockets. They would have had bigger and deeper pockets than men would have had during the same time period.

    The fashion historian in me is appalled at some of the incorrect historical facts... But it was entertaining to watch.
    Just FYI the first illustrations showcase the formal wear of the french nobility in the XVIII century. For their day to day tasks they wouldn't wear such restrictive clothing, similar in shape, but a bit more comfortable.
    Also, to be fair, literally nobody else in the nation would ever get to wear that. It was only a very small percentage of the population that wore fashionable clothes.
    They got the Victorian part right though. But they did show Queen Elizabeth instead of Queen Victoria. Which is just... Wrong. Like 2 centuries apart from each other wrong. SMH.

  • @ruthrh4746

    Actually, in the victorian and Georgian periods and before, women had pouches which they tied onto their waists with ribbons or chords over their hoops and petticoats, over which they placed full skirts and overskirts which had slits in the sides for pocket access. The pouches were huge, and significantly larger than modern pockets.

(note: I'm not a historian, just someone who is enthusiastic about history!)

      And that to walk up a flight of stairs they obv. lifted the front of the skirt a bit. I mean, Kristin is just trying to fall and die at 13.35. I wish for once they would actually research all of this. Talk to someone who wears hoops often, like a reenactor. There are plenty of videos on YT that show how to pee (or rather how to sit on a modern toilet and how to hold a chamberpot under a dress, how to get dressed, how to sit, how to ride a horse in a full victorian outfit (ie, skirts, dresses, corsets, chemises, hoops or bustles etc).

  • @Howdyrobin
    @Howdyrobin 6 лет назад +78

    When women wore corsets and large skirts daily, these corsets were mostly worn for support and were made out of more flexible materials. The skirts also had pockets that were under the skirt fabric but over the hoop. The actual fabric skirt has holes in it that allowed you to access them. It is really fascinating how these women were able to do things while also wearing so many layers.

      Echo 9970 well whale bones were extremely expensive and mostly used in corsets for the aristocracy. "normal" women (aka 95% of them) would wear stills made with wood or similar materials. (plus, 'whale bones' were not like...actual bones of a whale..... you know right?)

    8:56 actually at that point the pockets should still have been tied on underneath the skirt and accessed through slits in the side.
    Pockets were never really sewn into womens clothing, they were always separate pouches on their own little belt (because women had the space in their clothing to allow for that whereas men's clothing (especially their pants) went through quite a few tight phases)

      Actually, there's a 1700 "hoop skirt lite" called "pocket paniers" (panier=oldschool French for basket) that you tied around your waist for those buffet table hips from the Marie Antoinette days. And yes, people hid snacks in them! (Along with hankies or an extra fan.)
      The big ones for deluxe buffet table hips ("grand panier" meaning "huge basket") were shaped like squashed farthingales and had secrets slits for the pockets you could tie on under them to hide the goods :)
      The secret pocket technique stuck around with some hoop skirt models, actually :3

    Low key losing my mind rn.
    Keep in mind that you are wearing petticoats. These are primarily undergarments which would be less beautiful. Petticoats mainly provide the silhouette. Women in skirts wore underwear that covered the legs and would have an opening in the crotch women could still readily relieve themselves.
    ON POCKETS
    Like a hidden fanny pack a woman would tie a 'pocket' around their waist. All period skirts that slit on the side to access that pocket. A good way of thinking about this is: Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. The strings around her waist came undone and the pocket fell out of the skirts.

      Couldn't agree more with you. Not to consider that the floor long skirt was manly for balls, dinners and theaters. Normaly you would have an ankel lenght skirt so you didn't get tons of dirt on the skirt

    If youre gonna wear a hoop, you need to wear a corset too. It'll be like a Renn Faire all up in there!

      They've done corsets before.... terribly, and with not a single thought to seasoning, fit, or proper wear, but they "tried it."

    As someone who regularly wore hoops and petticoats when I was a teen for Victorian dances, I can say I have had the same experience and kudos for figuring out how to get in a car with all the fluff XD

    They actually totally put pockets in skirts and dresses throughout so much of history, including the Victorian era. There just weren't any in the ones they used here since they were made for costumes and not like, day to day wear and stuff.
