I spent about 10 minutes reading though your comments and I just wanted to say that your response to the most critical of comments is admirable....mostly in a "kill 'em with kindness" sort of way. The negativity some of the people criticizing a simple video is crazy. That said...I never though about using the hitch pin to attach a strap. I honestly can't believe that I didn't think of that myself. Thanks.
I appreciate your kind words. I try .you become with people that cut me down to be nice. I appreciate your kindness means a lot. Thanks for commenting and watching
Great video! I'm using Miolle Tow strap, I keep it in my truck, have not even used it for myself. Drove past a woman with car stuck deeply down in a ditch, with one wheel not even touching the ground. Pulled out this tow strap, connected one of the horseshoe connectors to her car, then the other side to my tow hitch and pulled her out in about 10 minutes. She was amazed. Great product, would not be without it in my truck.
Good video, not sure I ever saw anyone use the hitch pin through the loop end of a strap before. Good idea. On the front shackle, when you loop one end of the strap through the shackle then through the loop at the other end, that method should only be used if you absolutely cannot open the shackle and have no other way to attach the loop (no additional shackles or hooks available). The reason I say this is the way you did it will cause the strap to tighten down on itself as you pull a heavy load like when pulling another truck. I've had it happen. It is a huge pain to get the strap un-looped from the shackle afterwards when the over lapped layers of strap tighten down on itself. Nothing worse than being stuck on side of the road picking at the strap with a screw driver after you've pulled someone else out and you can't drive off because you'll have 20 feet of strap trailing under and behind your vehicle.
Ed J that’s why you can rull up a news paper or magazine like a burrito and stick it in the knot right before it tightens. Once your done recovering just wiggle the magazine out and boom, your strap is ready to be put away. I’ve done this millions of times. Might just upload a video of it since many people never tried it before
i was wondering how no one had commented that. all these rookies saying thank ima try that...NO, unless you got that screw driver and half an hour to get that pinched strap loose. good call on the magazine, grass, stick, trick. should have been included in the video.
I have 2 tow hooks on the back of my Wrangler already, where I was just about to purchase a rear hitch receiver with the D-Ring attachment like you showed, just to have a rear center pull option. It never dawned on me, to just use the hitch pin and put it the pin through the strap instead. So simple it's brilliant, and one less thing I need to keep inside my Jeep if I had gone with the D-ring receiver option. Thanks for making me feel dumb for not thinking of that myself. :D
rednroll1 word of advice, hitch pins have been know to bend when used in this way. So keep that in mind. If you have no better options you could do this but there is risk to it.
with that set up in the front you may wanna have a carpet knife handy after towing anything to cut the strap since it will be impossible to untie it with your hand..trust me ..biggest rookie mistake
You shouldn't tie a strap. That's what the loops are for. Use a shackle/D-ring and a strap rated for the lbs. you'll be pulling/lifting. There's ratings for shackles aswell
I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything. Just got a 4Runner and always wondered how the straps should be used properly. Seems like it would be a hassle getting the strap to unwind after you tie it like you did in the first example especially if it's wet and cold so I think I'm going to have to invest in some bow shackles as well.
If you can use a kinetic recovery rope instead this way is made for towing and light recovery and with a heavy truck or 4x4 you can snap it and a recovery rope will snatch whatever you want out. Good video and thank you
Thanks so much for your information. I use the Rhino USA recovery strap now. Thanks again. Thanks for commenting and watching. Thanks for your kindness

Thanks so much for commenting and watching. I would use the d-ring shackle over the hitch pin. Hitch pin if you have nothing else. Be careful out there
They are called Shackles....Clevis' s are strait shaft...Shackles have a dogleg...both are screw pins ...take it all the way in , then back it off a turn ,so it dont foul...The choker strap has an eye on each end to run the whip line through....Good job ,Rigging.
I have a chevy trailblazer with the 4.2 i6 and I just got a tow strap for it especially since I live in north western pa I could pull people out of ditches unless its a semi or something like that
Thanks Marshal, I see your two truck is on, dead center, but the truck you are pulling is off center. Does that matter, especially if you are yanking it out of mud, or snow?
Gear America has kinetic recovery ropes they are more expensive than straps and they are better and less hazardous and of course you can find ones that work from China on Amazon and Harbor Freight sells recovery stuff as well…
A recovery strap should be a kinetic product that stretches >10% and a tow strap should not elongate, much like a lifting strap. For recovery, a Bubba Rope, or kinetic product is the right choice. Also, soft shackles are much stronger than forged steel shackles and much safer. But trying to spend your money for you, but kinetic ropes won't damage tire r hooks and shackles due to their lack of such a jerking force on both vehicles.
Don't you have to hook up front of one vehicle and back of another when you do that? What about finessing the brakes while you're moving the vehicle, Etc?
As a filmmaker in LA ill give you an idea for your next video setup. Place the camera where your buddy might stand to watch you do this activity. Check out one or two education videos that are shot well and just copy their setup. Easy to do and makes your stuff look like a pro shot it.
Somehow I can't picture this in my head with your loop technique. I know how you attached it on the front, but then how do you loop through on the other end of the rope that attaches to the bracket of the towing truck?
You will need a d-ring or loop the like I did in the front then put it through the d-ring like put on the back. U put a d-ring through the loop and hook to the factory tow ring in front of your truck. Hope that helps you out. Thanks for stopping by to comment
Gotta be careful when hooking that strap to just the receiver pin.... It is very possible to cut a strap if pulling on an angle . And for the New Guys/ Gals , never, ever, ever hook a tow strap, rope, line, cable to the ball Hitch!!! It will break off , and cause Serious damage, injury or kill someone. Last but not least, a Tow strap is not a snatch strap!! Please learn proper recovery and towing knowledge ..... God Bless ..

Cheaper to buy your own straps, hooks, shackles, clevis etc... It's equipment you can use multiple times instead of sitting around waiting on a tow truck just to pay them $$. This equipment is great to get yourself out of being stuck with a basic come-along hand winch when off-roading, or to get others out of a ditch or snow-bank. @@marshallhurt8814 What I mean by unsafe is this: The strap + pin combo in the rear can produce dangerous results depending on timing and circumstances. The strap CAN have extreme forces acting on it and storing kinetic energy which can injure. The pin can be really high end or total crap depending on which one you have, what it's made from, etc. IF it breaks, it can slingshot metal at high speeds. There are MANY cases where people have died from improper towing, recovery, etc. I'm not trying to hammer you bud, just saying it's better to spend the extra 30 bucks for the right hitch and shackle so no one gets hurt. Google says 20 to 30 ft.. That seems very long
20 should be good for towing
Most tow straps aren’t really tow straps, they’re rescue straps. If you’re rescuing a vehicle down in a ditch that extra length will come in handy.
