The End of Analog TV in Columbus - Part 2

- This video depicts the final few minutes of analog transmissions by WSYX (6) and WBNS (10) in Columbus, Ohio, as well as the final shutoff. At 11:59 PM, not precisely but give or take a second, WSYX cut to the same bilingual infomercial that sister station WTTE broadcast when it ended its own analog service back in February. Sadly, WBNS, probably the station with the most storied history in Central Ohio (Flippo the Clown, Fritz the Night Owl, and other classic personalities from the Golden Age of Local Television), simply flipped a switch and went to static. In fact, other than the endless "Are you ready for DTV?" hype that every station in America's had for at least the last two years, NONE of Columbus's TV stations made a big deal about the final day of analog broadcasting. It's kinda sad, really.
Again, no ownership of anything is claimed here, as this video is being recorded for posterity and for historical interest.
*EDIT: State of Alaska has complied with the FCC and shut off their remaining 15 translator stations by January 10, 2022. This marks the end of the line for Analog in the United States.*
There was these 87.7 "Franken FMs" such as WVOA in Syracuse, NY, and low power / repeater stations up until July 13th, 2021, where they had to cease broadcasting on analog and on the 87.7mhz frequency due to a FCC mandate. This resulted in a bunch of "Franken FMs" going completely dark. Alaskan stations (15 to be exact) have the deadline extended to January 10, 2022 due to inclement weather. After that date, Analog broadcasting in the United States will truly cease to exist.
I was very young (and in a completely different country)
when this happened
however this is intruiging. a big historical moment not just for the United States of America but for the whole world.
i like your commentary, and 12 years on this was wonderful to watch!
By this point in the night, WCMH had already unceremoniously switched off their analog signal. I had checked on it just prior to starting the recording you see.
3:42 people when they find out analog tv is shutting down
lol it says your tv isnt ready for the dtv switch when it pretty much is
Because, of course, it cannot POSSIBLY be because of the evolution of the medium, it simply MUST be a vast New World Order/Illuminati-esque conspiracy to rule the universe and force us all into lives of slavery and mindless drone-ism.
Take the paranoia elsewhere, bucko, it is NOT welcome on MY channel.
It's because the FCC auctioned off the 700Mhz spectrum to wireless companies like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.
In 2016, they auctioned off the 600Mhz spectrum, causing more TV stations to move or to shut down.
The eventual move is to reduce the TV spectrum as small as possible (likely switch all stations to UHF), while selling the unused spectrum to wireless companies.
Very cool that you documented this. You do it very well and it’s cool to have a tv that can use analog and digital signals! (I also noticed you have what looks like an anime poster in the background. You a fan of anime?
I loved listening on 87.7 when my cable was out. I live in southern Columbus and it goes out alot. I like dtv because of better hd but I miss 87.7 and I hate pixilation
Interesting, too bad I missed the rare TV event. I was unemployed then & could've very well stayed up late to watch it, but had to get up early & go jobhunting. I probably did something else during this time & just forgot about the actual time of the DTV Xistion....
What happened to NBC from Part 1?
1:20 Digital UHF channel 21!!!
@Harry44Callahan2 They plan to use the analog signals no longer being used for stuff like Police radios.
They sold most of it to the wireless companies.
Imagine the nightlight broadcasting on 87.7 fm
I do have cable (WOW Digital), but I was using an antenna for these videos.
do you have a digital box?
Until 1953, WCMH 4 was on channel 3.
4:01
@TheKid965 I hate how some channels did that. They should of taken advantage of this historic moments and made a bigger deal of it.
This is cool and interesting
Is this a digital TV?
That would be quite correct.
I got Digital! And no Analog if I do get a analog it won't work...
