- Time to sort out what we will carry forward as breeding stock and what to sell. Gathering the ewes for a health check , footpath and mineral bolus, also trimming up the tails ready for tupping. Then we take some ewes to the market … this is the round up of what’s been happening with the sheep this week. Hope you enjoy watching 👋

Thats the name of the game, all herds have to be sorted and the culls sold down the way. You guys are having fun working together on the farm, its easy to see that Love is alive and well ,on Dale Farm. Thanks again for Sharing. 😊
Aw thank you steve ! Yeah we quite enjoyed it,
It’s nice to enjoy the job !
Cull the herd important part of maintaining a healthy flock. Great job! As always. ✌🏻❤️🇺🇸🙏🏻🇬🇧
Thank you Andrew ! X
You have a beautiful set of ewes. Your pastures have lots of grass yet. Ours are done for the year. We are expecting a snow storm end of the week. Not ready for that yet. Take care.
Gosh yeah winter soon arrives doesn’t it !! Thanks for the nice comments about the ewes , I’m happy with them , especially the new ones I hope they will do well!
Another well organised job completed. You and Nick are certainy doing a grand job. Take care xx
Thanks james 💪💪
I know now to never let my kids see my teeth or approach my back end with a can of black spray paint! Seriously, I know it's better they have one bad day after a good life than suffer as they age. Thanks for sharing the details. I've learned a lot from you. And I hope to rent one of your campsites someday.
Oh I know , it’s cruel isn’t it the harsh realities of farming at times !! But yeah it’s the lesser of the evils to get them sold and like you say, one bad day!
Excellent video again beautiful sunset always decisions to be made on a farm pertaining to livestock take care thanks for sharing X
Thanks for watching Terry, a nice sky seems to help every day feel better !!
I can remember Phantom as a lamb. Hope all is well after the storm
Ahh that’s brilliant you can remember! Yes I remember so well, exactly where she was born, even the ewe she was out of! And Dad saying look at those markings
Dear Joanna,
thanks for the explanations and the interesting video. You are doing a good job. Keep it up! 👍
Kind wishes, Gerold 🤗
Thank you Gerold it’s a constant cycle sheep farming - always moving and so the old ewes have done their job and now it’s time to make way for younger sheep!!
Great video Joanna. One of your best. Well done 👏
Thanks so much David x
You English girls are so lovely and we are having lovely weather as you but still no Frost for us yet always makes me think of Aunt Beryl who made me my first steak and kidney pie😋🐝
We had second the wettest day in Derbyshire for 160 years on Friday !!
@@DaleFarm WOW
No point keeping and feeding poor livestock over the winter. Best getting them sold. Thanks for the video. Hope it wasn't too wet for you last week. All the best 🇬🇧.
Thank you, yep it was very wet Friday but we are on a hill thankfully
Hi Jo, don't have qualms about the ewes going to market, they have been very well looked after while on the farm, and at the end of the day you are not an animal charity, that's life. Your remaining breeding stock looks in fine fettle so we await the next crop of lambs which will be here before you know it. Best wishes from a very wet EA.
Hi Colin, yes it’s not a rescue centre so eventually the right thing to do is send them on their way. We had to do the same with an 18 years old highland cow this year …!! She was arthritic and her time was up here , in the winter she couldn’t stand being at the ring feeder because she was bottom of the pecking order and the other cows would force her back… and she struggled to move quickly enough. so we would feed her in a separate heap when we could but in the long run she had to go!
It’s been very wet here too, flooding and disruption in Derbyshire ! Hope you are drying out
👍👍👍@@DaleFarm
Hi Joanna.
It's those small insights I get from your videos about the farm (sheep with dental problems) that make your channel such avid viewing. Another case of reality with compassion about the processes of dealing with livestock.
Many smiles from down south 🌞🌞🌞
Thanks Colin I really appreciate your comment and that you found the video interesting!
Hello your dad would be proud of yous, yous are doing a grand job I take my hat of to.yous both
Thanks so very much indeed , we appreciate the kind words
THANK YOU JOANNA AND NICK FOR THE VIDEO , PLEASE STAY SAFE AND WELL , XXX . 🚜
Thank you Ernest !
another good job Joanne...and wow, the campground is FULL😊
Hi Suzanne , the weekends are still having some demand but mid week is very quiet now. And we close the site soon until Xmas when we reopen for Xmas and new year as people like to do a short break around that time x
Another good video you @ Nick are doing a great job 👍👍👍
Thank you sandy xxx
Thankyou for showing us real farming ,
There are parts that are hard but that is what they sre raised for and bad teeth helps you starve .
You And nick take good care of them .
And as all of us like nick are learning.
There tweth looked realy bad .
Till next time .
We have a late fall in utah and its absolutly beautiful , bright golds ,reds pinks fires oranges .with maroon's.
And sweater weather .
Cheers .
Hi Nancy, the fall / autumn can be so glorious when you get the good weather! I do love autumn days and colours. I love your description. Here we had the second wettest day in Derbyshire in 160 years of records . 100mm of rain in 2 days , lots of flooding and disruption.
Your comment about the real side of farming , yeah it’s not always nice / there are decisions that are hard to make! You get fond of particular ewes / they are familiar etc and I hate sending them off !! But it has to be done!
@@DaleFarm thankyou for your reply ,
I saw what storm babet did in Scotland, Ireland and UK .
Looks like every one got dump on .
Yes , it must be hard but that makes you a good shepherdess , you care for your animals , but know the reality of it .
Still it's a good life you got .
Take care .
Good job getting through the hard choices! Good to get the sorting done to move forward. Do y'all usually just keep some of the newborn female lambs to become mothers in the herd when it is their time? Or do you buy new ones for new genetics? So glad to see your smiling face today y'all did look happy today. I was given an extra 28 days without a frost yet and Wow we have had so many extra tomatoes they are still coming now! I have gree, red, yellow, orange, dark purple and any other color tomatoes come in. I am canning day after day and yet the is always a giant pile on the 9 foot kitchen table that we can't even see for all the tomatoes and peppers. I guess it is a blessing to have such a problem. Y'all take care Cya on the next video.
Great news for your produce it’s wonderful to have your own produce. I have leeks, beetroot and broccoli at the moment. Plus some winter spinach
We mostly buy in new sheep when we need them for breeding 💪
A very good depiction of the realities of life on a farm Joanna and Nick. As you said so very well Joanna, it's much more humane for livestock that are well past their prime or those, that for one reason or another just aren't good doers to be sold. Over the years I've seen livestock that new and inexperienced farmers have kept for far too long face real stress and hardship only to end up dying a horrible death even with extra care and attention. A very good example you showed is the sheep few or no teeth. They would really have a hard time feeding and digesting and therefore wouldn't put on any condition at all for the colder months and end up suffering dreadfully. Realistically and sadly their time is up.
As always Joanna good work.
Thank you Jeff, yeah life can be harsh, and farms remind us of that fact as we constantly face difficult circumstances, … life isn’t a fairy tale! The old girls yes sad to send them on but absolutely don’t want them to suffer and Dale farm winters can’t be long and wet / miserable affairs. The ladies did a good job!
Yup has to be done, sold 6 cows last week, their time was up... 🤷♂️. One was 18yrs old...
A job well done Guys, ewes are looking well, In good condition for breeding 😊
Thank you Gerry, got them on some good grass now so hopefully they will enjoy that. And we have plenty of hay!
@@DaleFarm great 👍
Two pros in action. I thought about Bambi and thought I saw her in the group. Wishful thinking on my part. The ewes you kept look great and definitely ready when their knight comes to visit in time. Take care.
hi Donna, Bambi is pretty young and so hopefully she will be around many more years … I’ll show her in the next sheep video we do 😍
the finance was well cleared on those ewes ........! they were in good condition for being toothless .........you got a right good average price for them i was well surprised ............. well done , and well deserved ....!
Ah thank you!! Yes some very scrawny ewes !!
They didn’t owe us anything!
Hi yall two and great job and that was a beautiful rainbow 🌈 and good to see the fence is still doing its job. Enjoyed the video and see yall on the next one take care and all the best to yall. God bless 🙏
Thank you Michael , yes love the rainbow! It’s feeling cold and dull here today !!
Well done well worth a good sort out ready for tupping
Thanks Glyn, yes it’s good to get ready and organised, one less thing to think about
Difficult part of farming. Thoughtfully done, interesting seeing teeth condition or the lack of them. Thanks for taking us along.
Hi robin, yes some of the ewes I was surprised how they manage with so little teeth!! Someone said we call them GUMMERS! Which made me chuckle !!
This is a very important job to get done. I like your quote, better they leave on four legs than some other way.
In my opinion you and Nick are managing the whole farm so much more efficiently and really have found your groove. The livestock, fencing and improvements, hay and machinery and general observations and acting on problems.
Dale farm is a great farming channel. I wish I could pop over and take a walk around with you.
Dave.
Thank you dave that’s a really kind and encouraging comment to read, yeah we have given it a lot of energy and attention- taking over the farm entirely has been a steep learning curve , very scary and a massive jump for me … from just sheep care which was where I had the most experience. Nick even less experienced than me but he’s been amazing really and we talk about farming all the time now, we must be farmers …! You think differently too!! Always welcome to come and visit !
Like I said before. the farm is in very good hands❤❤❤
Thank you leona x
So great to watch you Joanna & Nick always doing the Farming work so brilliantly - doing the Mineral Bolus - Bet the human dentist sees far worse !!! That Ewe had a tail has long has a Fox !! Very good seeing the Footpath job and the Ewes' faces & those dainty feet & your resilience taking the Ewes to the sellers market doing what's right going forward for Dale Farm Take Care xx
Hi David , yes the teeeth are interesting to look at , it’s amazing how well they manage with so little teeth! The footbath I hope will help , jts been so wet it’s not a good time of year for feet!!
Unfortunately the cull ewes have served their time, have been well looked after and were only going to determinate and mostly die during winter. If they had been in the wild I would say it’s doubtful they would have got to that age. You and Nick excise great animal care and husbandry but I know how you feel when you are loading them up and shifting them to market. The new ewes look well.
Thank you, yes the winter can be very harsh it’s not nice for the thin ones to survive and they won’t gain any weight
Thank you I am pleased with the new ews so far!!
Wow over 20k subscribers!
Thank you xx
Always enjoy your videos. Ewes lookin good condition for breeding. Important o mix new ewes in with your own ewes before going to ram as you can have abortion if you dont mix them until they in lamb. If you could pick out cull ewes at weaning time and give them extra grass or even a little feed you will get a higher price for them when selling them.
Hi james thanks for the advice , much appreciated. The cull ewes my dad would keep them a while to feed up a bit but I really don’t think it’s worth it, in my case I wanted to get them off the farm so I can focus on the others ! The cost of feed etc it’s just an extra group to worry about !!
But yes I could have put more energy into getting the culls in better condition.
The ewes - I could run them all together now for 2 weeks until the tups go out ?
@DaleFarm yeah we always do and then and when dividing them up into groups put some new ones and some of your own in each group and you should have no bother then.
What a cool video!! You explain the process very well! Great Joanna!!👌
Thank you for watching
Allways found it hard getting rid off ewes who served me well .
Yeah it does feel a bit sad
Congratulations on the streamline treatment process. Always happy to see you both working the farm.😊
Thanks Amy! One of the times where everything went to plan!
You & Nick have a brilliant system going there now when sorting out the sheep etc it’s like clockwork so very well done to you both & best of luck with all the upcoming jobs on the farm this week . Go team Dale Farm 👊👊👊
Thanks so much Michael it’s nice when things go to plan / go efficiently!!
0:49 if it wasn't for the metal fencing and the hay bales this could have been a painting by john constable.
🥰 the big bales spoil the view for sure ! I said that to nick when we put the new stack there !
Age gets to us all, they have served you well over time, but you can’t just keep them through sentiment, they need to earn their keep, another enjoyable video
Thanks, yes that’s very true !!
Thanks for watching
Not a fun job to say goodbye to old friends that have made farming possible but it needs to happen!
Hi John, yes like you say it’s a necessity !
I know sending the old girls off is hard especially the bottle raised pet lamb when they get old - but they have no teeth - it is either a quick humane end or starving as they don't have enough teeth and over the winter can't eat enough food to keep warm
Yep, last winter I fed Mary ( pet sheep) on warm sugar beet twice a day, but it wouldn’t be viable financially to do that for all the old girls …
try taking a picture of a new ewe with the new moon😊
You're right to sell your old ewes They wouldn't be good over the winter. Good luck with everything xxxx
Thank you David, yes the winter can be so harsh
Great video Joanna what is it they say out with the old in with the new 👌
Always moving !!!
Hi Joanna,
A bit of a mixed price for your sheep, but they have served the farm well. Best for them to go while they are still fit and healthy, rather than hang on and maybe problems develop further down the line. Overall though, I think you had a good year and hopefully an even better one next season...🙂👍🏻
Hey Eddie yeah I was very mixed but the old girls left in one piece which is definitely better than becoming ill or dying at the farm x
Hey Eddie yeah I was very mixed but the old girls left in one piece which is definitely better than becoming ill or dying at the farm x
Do cull ewes go for food. I mean like animal food or ???
Yeah they might make a kebab or curry or something … which is better than going in a bin I guess !
Great job done there guys. Get the old stock out. How many head do you run now Joanne ? Great video as normal Good luck and God bless. ❤❤❤❤❤
Got 93 ewes now 👍👍 thanks Stu
I would have thought that maybe the footbath needed to be a bit deeper.........good for the chemical to get well up the foot i would think. but otherwise doing a good job there guys as you say sell them before they die
Yeah I think a bit deeper also might have been better, … next time !
How old are ewes when they start losing their teeth. Another good video 👍
I think it varies but probably age 7-10
First
I always felt sad sending off the old girls because I had got to know all the characters and usually they looked quite good, especially the ones that had prolapsed or become metabolically stressed on quads. I just hoped they had gone for cull and not ended up with the kind of farmer who would breed them again against the best interest of the animal.
Hi Wendy yes I agree especially the characters leaving. There were 2 I really was fond of and didn’t want to part with really but I had to be a bit firm work myself … they are not pets! Yes the best end for them would be a swift exit and no more work for them x
end use of older sheep?
Food !
with all the sheep are getting ready for lambs when is you going to have a baby to send on the name of John ???? hugssssss
No comment 😂😂
Great video a geld ewe is wat it is u should of had ur money out of her in lambs she gives u wat it is! Better to leave alive and not a lot of money then pay to get it collect by the dead man 🙈
Yeah absolutely right there !!
8:09 biggest cameltoe I think I’ve ever seen 😂
