Hi guys! I just want to clarify, Darla is the 6th puppy I’ve had in my life. So when I say her biting, I don’t mean the normal puppy teething biting! She gets aggressive, snarls, and flies across the room to get you. She’ll grab on to your pant leg and not let go. Brett and I keep working with her every day and hopefully it will improve, if not, it may definitely be time to call in professionals :)

I know ur pain. My first dog Zoey was too full of energy and bit us all the time, and i was told to get a companion for her. We got Emma 2 weeks later, and Zoey no longer bit or attacked us. If you can get another dog, same breed, do it. It's a game changer. She no longer cared to entertain herself with us. She wrestled with her sister and was a totally different dog.

I have had numerous breeds of dogs all my life. I currently have a female Australian Shepherd. Her name is Roxie, and she is nine years old, a rescue dog. I have had her for 18 months. My buddy, Jake, an Australian Shepherd, was sixteen years old when he passed this last January. He was also a rescued dog at two years old. Australian Shepherd's do nip. My dogs patrol the house regularly and require a lot of exercise. They are intelligent and loyal. Darla is so adorable. She will become little man's best friend and protector.

    Darla is adorable!😊
You are exactly right about the nipping! My grandfather was a cattle hearder and when he brought home one of the dogs used to heard the cattle, my grandmother couldn’t feed the dog without being nipped at the he heels.
Maybe puppy Prozac or lavender essential oil IS in order.

Ok, We had an English shepherd/Australian shepherd cross when we were kids. She never got very big, I would guess about 30 -35 lbs. She would nip at out heels, if we went to far from the front yard. We had cattle, best cattle dog ever, she moved them fro m one field to another, and was never trained to do so. She just saw dad and us doing the moving, and boom...she figured it out. The man down the lane from us had milk cattle and trained dogs...he offered to buy her, because she could work a whole herd pretty much on her own. Any way....when she started nipping in our case, biting in yours...she was still very young, dad would tell her no..and redirect her, with a toy, or a ball..or a stick he would toss, when she would bring the stick to him, or the ball, he would put her on sit, and take the stick or whatever from her, and give her a treat from his pocket. Every time, every single time he saw her do it...same command, NO, firm...then out would come that stick or whatever, he would throw it, she would bring it back and then she got a treat. Never changed it...after a few weeks, she quit nipping our heels, she was scolded..NO, then rewarded for redirecting to the ball or whatever. The only time she ever nipped after that....we were wading in our creek that fed the pond, and all of a sudden there she was...she nipped at us and forced us up the left bank of the creek...we couldn't figure out what in the world was that dog doing it..had it lost it's mind...then we saw a water moccasin laying in a hollow tree trunk, in the water, not 3-4 feet from where we had been walking..that dog..pretty much put herself between it and us. These are extremly smart dogs, with constant correction, and redirection..they will pick it up quick!! No...toy, play...treat. The other thing is, these are working dogs..not lay around the yard dogs...if they do not have a job, they will get into all kinds of mischief. So give them job, as they mature, or teach them an obstacal course, plenty of exercise would be an excellent "job", they are high energy dogs. Loyal, want to please, protective, and usually not real aggresive..depending on the situation. Good with kids and other animals. Please do not give up on her, she is still a baby, and hey, you didn't potty train Little Man over night, she is a baby too. If you start about 8-9 months, putting her bed in his room, or where ever she sleeps, she will know he is hers...she will take ownership, so to speak. Bed every night when he goes, and tell her time for bed. I have a chi/terrier cross, he was a rescue...and he even know go to bed...heads for my room, does a sit and wait, until I get in there, to pick him up, and put him on the bed, he knows lunch, leave it, no barks, lay, sit...jeep...so he knows we are driving not walking somewhere, cookie, Carl, Eva, which are neighbors, and he meets them at the gate...that is just part of what he knows....if you invest time, and repetitive training..you will love this dog, as much as I love Turbo...who by the way, does not act like a shakey little chi...he acts more like a terrier, with attitude!

💕🤗 The cattle dogs breed jump really high, that's why we see so many in trick competition and they are the stars⭐⭐ in "Superdog" shows. Very very smart. I had a Blue Heeler that would "pinch nip" humans when she was over excited. I would put a muzzle on her for 5 minutes everytime. Didn't take her long to learn. I didn't make a big deal of it, just said a stern "No" , put the muzzle on and paid no attention to her for the 5 min. She was 6 months old when she found me, so be patient. A couple of months may be a game changer 😁

Hello, Just wanted to let you know that the puppy stage is so very hard, but it does get better. On the biting issue, my suggestion is something I have done with every puppy I have ever worked with (I am not a dog trainer by any means). I take my hand and put my thumb in their mouth at the top and then at the top of their snout I put my fingers and squeeze hard, but not so hard you hurt them, and as you're squeezing you say no bite in a very firm tone. This has always worked for me to break the bad habit of biting. I also keep a spray bottle of water near me to just enforcing to stay out of things, like garbage or chewing on cords. I am 71 so I have had a lot of different dogs over the years, I even had a wolf in my truck (semi). Good Luck with puppy training.

Darla is precious and you are awesome to make her part of your family!
I have to tell you, we already had a sheltie and one year old puppy that was 75% king cavalier, Charles spaniel, part Papillon and part long haired Chihuahua. My brother’s dog then had 13 pups. They are silver labs. We got attached to the silver labs and were surprised when they gifted us with two puppies. I have to tell you, I was terrified to have two puppies. We had one that was a biter and a jumper.
The one thing that made the biggest difference, was that we got some tug toys, a frisbee, a soccer ball and some other squeaky balls. It was crazy, we could see the puppies were taken with all these different toys. We realized early on that one of the lab puppies was a frisbee addict. We got to where I was taking him out every hour and a half to play frisbee and ball. They became really active and quit nipping and biting. I don’t know if this will work for you or not, but if you can find out if she loves frisbees, tennis balls, or just any toy that she loves to run after, they love it, and they wear themselves out playing. I don’t know that this will work for your puppy, but it worked wonders for all of ours. Another thing that has been great is the puzzle treat toys. I know how tough it can be, but if you can find something that stimulates their mind or something that they love to do physically, they definitely calm down from the biting and jumping. Our sheltie is a herding dog, and the soccer ball is his thing.
They do tend to nip more when they are herding dogs. They tend to try to herd their people around, lol.
He used to be really bad about running up behind us and nipping our heels. Once again, we found out what motivated him, and it did deter him from nipping and biting.
Of our 4 dogs, we only had one that was not interested in the frisbee the balls or the tugging. That is our female lab. Her hobby is trying to take the toys from the others and making them chase her, lol.
Congratulations to you all! I don’t know if any of this will help you, but I can’t recommend trying some different toys for stimulation. The best thing is if she likes to run and chase balls or something. Once they get the hang of knowing that you’re going to throw another ball or frisbee, they start bringing it back to you and a good 10 minute session makes them happy and wears them down.
From my experience, I will say the age that Darla is is the toughest to get through. It sounds like you’re doing all the right things with the treat training. If you can find some activity that she loves, I think that will make all the difference in the world! Good luck to you all! 😊

A couple of thoughts Theonie…#1 (and you are a Top Dog at this sort of stuff girl) Since Little Man has a real need to feel in charge of Darla (and already KNOWS EVERYTHING lol) put together a binder with Darla’s pic on the front. On the inside make pages for a daily journal, growth chart, training chart and “trick’s” chart (and of course you’ll have to get those colored star stickers). Make it all about him and her even if you are the one doing the task’s…he has to document and chart in his binder Daily. Potty times (even the mistakes), feeding times, 1st bath should have a picture, look for and keep a baby tooth and record dental cleanings. So if you are brushing her teeth he is a part of the Task recording it. Lot’s of stuff to record and date from Bad Behavior to Favorite Toys.
I know this sounds a lot like a baby book but this is the exact same thing my daughter Bree had to do in 4-H for her horse (from 4th grade thru High School). At the end of the summer at the County Fair the
4-H’ers all handed in their horse journal’s to be graded by the judges and got Ribbon’s and a Check according to how well they did. 4-H builds Super Great Citizen’s, good character, good manner’s, accountability, social skills, leadership and you’ll make friend’s you’ll have the rest of your life. I’m still friend’s at 70 with most of our 4th grade 4-H group (we did Sewing…I made most of my clothes in HS to fit my tall 5’10” frame…Cooking …I became a Caterer and used those radish roses we were taught to make lol…and Modeling… I put the 5’10” to use modeling in Fashion Shows for local clothing stores, it also taught me social graces, etiquette and all about Hair and Make-Up (my favorite part!!!).
My daughter loves to look back at her journal’s and share with her daughter memories of working with Frosty…the same horse my granddaughter had in her 4-H group.
Well my A.D.D. and Me can’t keep any story short obviously.
#2 If you recall most of the Trick Dog Shows you’ve ever seen have at least an Australian Shepard, Australian cattle dog or some type of Herding dog jumping through High Hoops…Sorta sounding like Darla huh?
I recently adopted my Lola ( Bougie Girl) from Adopt-A-Pet. She is a 4lb pure bred Yorkie, 4 yrs old. She went through 2 Owner’s because of her viscousness around their other dogs. It’s just her and me. She is very loving, a big time snuggler, loves to give me kisses. I’ve had many kinds of dogs and all sizes but never have I had a pet (not even a husband ha ha) that would let me wrap my arms around her tight (that just triggers that fight or flight in animals) and take a snooze for an hour or so. She loves to be cuddled like that and she loves to wear outfits which is just crazy. I just got her own luggage from Temu to put the bizillion outfits from Temu in. Ha, we having matching stuff! Any other dog I’ve put clothes on instantly proceeded to rub them off themselves. She just prances around cuz she know’s she’s Pretty!!! I talk with her previous owners often and she was nothing like this with them…guess she just needed a crazy old lady whose daughter’s had left the nest to live with (and not busy people with another dog to split their attention with). The cuddly naps are great, Theonie You are Missing Out !!! ❤ Connie

What a wonderful story. My girls were also in 4-H! Steers and pigs...I always called em my boys! Both of them have great respect for people and animals, and wonderful work ethics, I think 4-H contributed to that. My Turbo, was found abandoned in a trailer park. I found him on a whim, was driving by the animal shelter and someone turned my blinker on and the next thing I knew I was going to the shelter....I had a McNab already and was not even thinking of another dog. I went straight to his kennel...strange feeling. He had just came back from being neutered, a little earlier and I would have missed him. Took him home when I left there. We think at one time he as being trained as a dog for the deaf. When the phone rings, the microwave goes off, the timer for my meds goes off...anything like that he starts jumping on my legs..then he licks my hand and goes to whatever made the ding...when someone knocks, he does the same. and stands in front of the door. I had open heart surgery 2 yrs ago in Aug...there was no one that could stay 2 weeks with me, as requested by doctor, I had a few complications,,,but I am a tough old bird. Anyway, Turbo would lay on my chest with his ear to it. Like he was listening for the beat. He has always slept so close to me, I think he is trying to wear me....but this..head on chest was new. I really think we were meant to be together. He knows when I am sad, and becomes a clown with the zoomies, when I cry, rarely, he licks my face, when I laugh it looks like he is smiling...he talks too. He can carry on a whole conversation, with sounds and some sound like words...I am really blessed. Any one that loves dogs, is okay in my book!!!

You are very blessed to have a gift from God like Turbo. We’ve all had animal’s we love but isn’t it Amazing when we truly have that gifted special one? Mine was a Morkie named Kissee, she passed away at 15 yrs old this last August (took her last breath in my arms looking lovingly at me with her beautiful big brown eyes, wish I could post a pic). I lasted 5 weeks then Kissee orchestrated from Heaven to bring Lola into my life (that had to be what happened!). Kissee was a true marvel also like your Turbo, read my moods, cheered me up and was always there for me. She talked too, made sounds I’ve never heard come from any animal. She could kind of purr and roll her R’s so to speak, made you sit up and listen to what she was telling you all right! When I had to leave her at home she would howl the most primitive howl until I returned (the neighbors couldn’t believe such a little tiny dog could sound like that). She was Loving, attentive and caring…in human quality ways. Definitely one of a kind, once in a lifetime best friend. Lola is special but lacks that spooky almost human quality. Aren’t we lucky to of had that (or have)? So wish I’d had a husband that was tuned into me like Kissee was ha ha. My “people picker” is broke when it comes to men lol. My Aunt Verlene in Missouri has been telling me that since I was 17 and still is and I turned 70 last month. I’m just much better at picking pet’s lol.
My daughter in 4-H grew up to have her daughter in 4-H with the same horse. They both volunteer with Sound Equine Option’s healing and training rescued horses (from some awful situation’s) to be adopted out to 4-H children. So very proud of them but do wish they had a little bit of time to spend with me occasionally. You probably know how that goes…

I also have a German shepherd and she suffers from anxiety because anytime my husband and I leave the house and come back home she is very clingy and whiny she is over 2 years old. She has started having seizures and she is on medication for those. Darla looks very beautiful.

Omg that's so crazy how many breeds....she is so cute and I'm sure she is a test to train but I'm sure she will grow outta it but I'm thinking she's gonna need a lot of running time!!!! ❤ Thanks for sharing with us and good luck guys❤❤

    That darned youtube unsubscribed me.
When I first caught a glimpse of Darla my first thought was Australian Shepherd. She's got the color of a kelpie as well as her eye color. They start to mature at age 2. But keep in mind they are a herding dog. They need to get out and run off that energy daily. After awhile you'll see a different puppy.
    Good luck 🐕‍🦺

Theonie, she is adorable!! I think she is a puppy that gets bored easy. She probably needs to go on walks. You can tell she’s very smart. I bet she grows out of this phase, and turns out to be a great dog, and besides, She kinda looks like Brett, in her eyes. LOL!! They say dogs will look like their owner. 😉 All joking aside. I wish you guys well with her. You’re going to fall in love with her. 💖

When I got my own DNA ancestry test done, I was told anything less than 5% is WAY back, and basically just a rough guess. So I wonder if it’s similar for the pet DNA, like for instance maybe Darla has the DNA of ANCESTORS of the 2% breeds, which may not have had the personality resulting from 100s of years of selective breeding for size, guarding, etc.

The dog that we got, she bit a lot too. It just takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. She would bite everything. That's why we took her away from my daughter because of our grandbaby , the biggest reinforcement that I did was the food and when she bites you give her a no with a yes. You give her the no for the hands. Yes, for the toys. Congratulations with the Results. And new dog 😊

Awww Darla.. I would say the jumping could be border. We had a border collie/husky mix and he jumped all the time. And herded. lol He would herd my daughter when she was little. Hopefully she will grow out of that aggressive behavior.
