Ever since getting good bike lights, I've been keen to go up a climb in the day light, wait till the sun goes down, and then descend in the night.
Well, this video is of just that and Golspie was my chosen destination to do it.

I was part of the local Caithness riding group who first helped to get the trails sanctioned and built. Even did a bit of trail building. Part of the original driver for the trails was locals getting sick of us ripping down the original walkers path to the summit.
That sounds about right. Great way to solve the problem for the walkers😜
The drone footage of you riding with the sea in the background was spectacular!
Thanks! Was really hoping that would come out well.
Knowing how good a biker you are, made me feel a little bit better about ballsing up some of the climbs on a bikepacking trip a couple of years back. Camped next to the monument and descended down to Golspie for breakfast next day.
Looking very Ali G at the top 😂 agree it’s a great decent and a challenge in daylight so it must have been really challenging in the dark especially the wood section! ❤️🏴
Great video Andrew. Looks an awesome ride. Yes please to a vid comparing the lights.
A few years back, as I was planning my first MTB trip to Scotland, your videos were my bible for planning routes, deciding on locations and getting to know what to expect on each trail.
I moved to Scotland in January and still love coming back to see what you're up to.
Really good to see the Wildcat in the dark and you have tempted me to try the same thing at Glenlivet to see the track from a different perspective.
Cheers Andy!
Keep em coming 🤘
Great to hear!
Thanks for sticking with me, even after moving up 👍😊
Some of those jumps are blind enough in the daylight, not to mention Nighttime! Definitely worth knowing the lay of the land before going down in the dark!
Very much so. I haven’t managed to hit them well, even in the daylight.
Great video Andrew, it is more exciting riding in the dark for sure, I recon you see alot more wildlife then and you're senses are more alert but also the imagination 😉, I usually night ride in Golspie once a week, usually end up on the Ben at the end of the ride. I have the monteer 8000, it's a great light which I prefer to have on my helmet... Works for me.
Agree 100%. The 8000 on the head is a good shout👍
awesome video Andrew, nice climb (on the ebike!) and chill at the top, love riding trails at night, really hightens the senses and focuses the control - nice one! that light does perform well too, cheers
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks Andrew...that was very cool ! Drone footage of the valley behind and the steepness.. The light was amazing at dusk , as well.!
Glad you enjoyed it
I’ve driven through Golspie and looked up at the statue countless times. Didn’t know the trails were there 🤦🏻 Cracking sunset, descent and video!
Well now you know. You can get it next time👍
Great trail, love the night riding, also brings a different level to it.
Totally agree!
Awesome bike and amazing video
Thanks ✌️
Superb 👍 great to see the contrast between the time you did this on the Deviate Highlander in the daylight and in the dark on the Crafty.
Got to keep things varied 🤘
Cracking ride Andy. Kept up a fair lick despite riding a tight line. Well ridden .
Cheers Gaz, did the best I could.
Awesome...... definitely need to get up there
It’s a long way to go, but totally worth it in my opinion.
Great video. Those lights do look amazing.
They really are great 👌
illuminating Video Andrew! What a fantastic Trail👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely belting dude . Epic trail that . Great vid
Glad you enjoyed it
A great video; you've gotta love the Lactic Ladder climb.
On the e-bike, yes 😜
Timing is everything nailed th3 light and the trail. 🎉
Cheers Bernard 👍
Great video! I use to night ride when I lived in the US desert during the summertime. ( to hot to ride in daytime ) Those were great rides even with the coyotes following me through the desert…
Night riding from necessity by the sounds of it. Coyotes would definitely add a little spice to the ride 😜
Like always, great content.
Much appreciated!
Nice one Andy!
Many thanks!
Night riding is great fun - especially on trails you know well - gives it something extra!
Oh, and thanks for mentioning parking - I still had to pay for my parking from yesterday at Schiehallion :D Luckily as there is no signal they give you 72 hrs to pay as you no doubt know :)
Hmm, Schiehallion in the dark 🤔😜
That is a great looking trail, and the lights do look good didn't seem to create to many shadows. 👍
It’s a banger of a trail 👌 And yes, the lights don’t create much in the way of shadows.
Very cool 😎👍🏻
Thanks
AWESOME! What a ride ✌❤
Thank you buddy 👍
Great vid . I remember doing a 12 hour night race there years ago first lap you went all the way to the top and after that cut in at the big drop . Was a great event shame it only ran once from memory.
That does sound cool!
🚴 Great Stuff buddy enjoyed the Video 🤙
Thanks Taffy 👍
Great vid, thought that was Ali G making an appearance at 6.35 ;-)
Haha, I totally see it😂
Brave.....or slightly mad to do Golspie in the dark. Its a great trail.
Haha, the jury is still out on which one 😜
Great video as always bud , can I ask what editing app you use and is it one for all or is there separate ones for drone and helmet cam?
I use Final Cut Pro which is software designed for the Apple Mac. I use it for everything I do, no other software.
Great video, done it twice in daylight, it’s tremendous. Would love to do it at night, btw like the comment regarding the duke. 👍🏻
It’s such a great descent 👌
Banger Vid that 👌🏻
Thank you
Balblair is worth a look if your in the area
It sure is, done it a couple of times now 👌
I've done a couple of night rides, but definitely not as epic as yours 😎
All night rides are epic though 👍
Great video again Andrew. Just out of curiosity what light do you use on your bike? I didnt see a link in the info tab. It looks to be a very good light. How many lumens and how long would it last on full beam? Many thanks
This is the light here
magicshineuk.com/product/monteer-12000/
It’s immensely powerful! I think it last 2-3 hours at full power, but it’s really bright enough to use at half power all the time imo.
@McTrailRider Thanks for that Andrew. I was thinking it was a Monteer. Top top light for sure. Keep the great videos coming 👌
@@jollyroger5999 if you’re looking to get a light, I would honestly consider the Monteer 6500, it’s much cheaper and perfectly adequate power.
Get the 12000 if you’re ok with the price though, it’s a beast!
Amazing! What speed were you doing on the lower section through the woods?
No idea, but it felt fast.
What size crafty do you ride here? Got my eye on one and being 6ft not sure on whether to go L or XL ? Thanks
I’m 6”1’ and ride a large. They are quite big compared to done other brands. I’m happy with my choice though.
are you still on the standard tyres or did you swap them out? How you finding the 2.6s
I have just swapped them over to 2.4 Continental Kryptotal’s and the difference is astounding.
Way too much volume and flex from the 2.6’s.
Nice trail riding and rad bike. im also eyeballing a crafty but not sure what size to choose. i have noticed in one of your videos u ride a size L. I'm 178cm and based on the charts im in between sizes. Can you spare some wisdom based on your experinece on what size should i get? unfortuantly testing mondraker is not an option for me.
I’m a 184cm and I found the large to be quite big compared to other brands initially, but then got used to it.
@@McTrailRider thanks, and i thought to take L. was looking at L XR or M Crafty RR since XR has 10mm less reach. but based on your input im now more leaning to size M.
Hi Andrew been enjoying your videos for years ,not sure if it’s just me but the footage from your new camera appears to be a bit blurry.Won’t stop us watching tho. Cheers
🤔 it’s definitely not as over sharpened or vibrant as the GoPro. I don’t see it as blurry though.
Will have a re-watch and see if I can do anything.
I think the trails were built by the local club. Which if memory serves is/was affiliated to the descendants of the naughty Duke you were dissing 😉
That sounds about right, and explains why it’s better than the usual trail centre.
I think I remember hearing about the community campaigning to get funding back in the day.
Historically you’re supposed to piss or more on that statue. 😂 Is there still bits where the locals have tried to bring it doon?
Pissed on it last time 😉 Never went over on this occasion though.
Hate to be a Negative Nellie but what backup do you have in the event of mechanical failure or indeed injury?
Too much to list both, but all the basics for mechanical. First aid kit, life blanket, extra layers, tourniquet and satellite communication for medical stuff.
Ali McG😂
no deer jumping out on you in this one.
Thankfully 😅
Ah you beat me to it. Need to get back to Golspie. First rode it in 2014 and thought it made Glentress look like it was resting on its reputation. Now obvs I need to get back there too.
What action camera did you use?
DJI Action 4
@@McTrailRider could you send me those settings for dark that's best iv seen in low light tbh
@@McTrailRider cheers 🍻
@@hughrussell5703 the main settings to use are.
1/200 minimum shutter speed and no higher than 1600 ISO.
The camera is hugely important, the Action 4 is very good, but apparently the Insta360 Ace pro is better.
I believe the dji to be a better overall camera though.
@McTrailRider 24-25 fps to let more light in and is wb auto? Ev comp 0-3
Cracking vid andrew, love a bit of night riding, sadly been put off by night riding,as in early December i did a night ride, sadly on the return i came off,at speed in my local woods, broke my wrist badly, knocked out,and i was on my own, managed to get back, then straight to hospital!
Lesson learnt here,if out night riding dont go on your own! 😫
Oh man! That’s brutal! I’m very aware of how bad things can get and so easily too 🙈
I, on the other hand, cannot ride without gloves.
You definitely can 😜
I had to look at the comments before watching. I feel like I enable you. This was less exciting to watch, I was sick to (yes -- my) my stomach. Perhaps the dark made me think it was more dangerous.
Surely more danger equals more exciting?
Nice low light dronage👍
Cheers! The light did get too low for the drone in the end though, but glad I got something done before.
@@McTrailRider Yeh, you don't see many people filming in those conditions, but it looked good, caught it just in time, and it followed you unlike in Spain.
@@Peasedotcom different drone this time 😉 The DJI is better in low light for sure.
Well done. It is great to see a man taking responsibility for his own life and safety. Today there is so much anti risk taking propaganda that to do as you do can be held up as unacceptable. It isn’t and keep going!
I’m always going to do what I enjoy. I certainly wouldn’t let any (propaganda) influence me.
