I feel like mike mistakes Love for envy. Mike talks on and on about how el is "His superhero" but never showcases any love or affection toward her. And when he actually does it seems as though el has drifted away. and even mike doesn't seem to be entirely telling the truth, just pressured. However, with Will, It is more romantic. In a way that in all seasons Mike never stops looking out for him and seeming genuine with everything he says. It's clear neither el nor mike can truly be themselves around each other (As showcased by mike wearing cheap knockoff designer clothes and El lying through her ass). I really do love El and Mike individually but Imo they are not the best pair. I see El as a strong, independent woman whos just grown up to be independent. I feel like she would really thrive that way, And Mike wants someone that he feels that someone will rely on him. He wants to *be* in that superhero position and with Mike and Will together I think that's the best outcome. I am really hoping for Byler's endgame but if it doesn't happen the most I want is for Will to be happy. This was very long so I applaud you if you read it all

OKAY so I have the a HC / theory that might just be me really wanting canon byler but who cares: (TL;DR: Mike dated the first girl that was willing to talk to him because he has no understanding of love and a Lotta internalized homophobia) We know from Nancy that the Wheeler parents aren't exactly in love, they're just pretending for money and image, and I believe that messed up their children's understanding if love (why neither Nancy or Mike can say ily). We also know that Mike has ✨internalized homophobia✨ (or at least it's widely accepted by the fandom that he does.) We ALSO know that he'd hardly spoken to any girls outside his family and that girls usually avoided the Party. So the actual theory is that when El started hanging with them, most of the party had enough understanding of love and examples of what relationships should (or shouldn't) look like. However in Mike's mind this is the first girl in his life so clearly he's feeling love (just like how his mom went for the first rich dude she saw). Since Eleven had no social skills or understanding of relationships either, she took Mike's word for it and was stockholmed into their relationship in a way, which in turn let Mike further convince himself that this was a proper romantic relationship and that he didn't have a crush on his best friend.

I’m pretty convinced this isn’t a coincidence anymore. Like this kinda writing is intentional I think it’s pretty safe to say these two are going to date. And it’s cute. As. Hell. There’s absolutely nothing I love more than best friends to lover regardless of gender. Just to see them grow up and face so many hard ships together and later fall in love it’s so heart warming. I’d also like to note another piece of evidence that they’re going to date. Mike and wills mbti types are infp (will) and enfj (mike) these two personality types are the most loving and they are literally made for each other there’s far too many signs pointing to them being a couple and I’m living for it.
