Its funny he talks about being the best out of your friend group and getting smashed at a local. My first tournament was in melee(wasnt exactly 'a local', but the place was like 5 minutes from my house), and it was a fairly large pot, I think first place was like 2,500. Well, I faced mewtwo king in the second round. I had never heard of him or anything, so I figured he was probably close to the average across the US, so I never went to another tournament again.

@@caw64 no. it was youmacon in detroit back in 2013. its an anime convention, and its become pretty huge, but it was pretty small back then. Im pretty sure the pot was so big because one of the weekend passes came with a bunch of stuff, including one tournament pass, and people probably just joined that because it was the most fun game there.

Buzzers also have a problem with long distance giving a huge advantage to one side. Probably better to just let them both take a guess and whoever is closer gets the point or you get however many points away you were and whoever has the lowest score wins.

@@therealkenny6 verb tenses are something that is hard in almost any language though. As someone who speaks French and quite a bit of Spanish, I do agree that English is easier, but there are still some intricacies. Like when trying to find a correct past tense to use, it can be tricky to know when to use (with to make as the example):
      I made
      I was making
      I had made
      I had been making
      I have made
      I have been making
The last two are present tenses, but for someone learning the language that could be very tricky

The bright side about learning english though is that you can be really really incorrect and still be easily understood. Some other languages don't have that benefit. Like, broken english is probably understood better than any other broken language. That makes it easier to engage with stuff and practice. We also have spaces and only 26 letters so it's pretty easy to look up any english word compared to something like japanese with it's kanji.

I do hope this does not sound mean but, english is a pretty easy language. In german for example every word has ine aligned gender that changes multiple words in the sentence. That is not that hard to figure out, the problem is that there is not a single rule explaining which word is alinged with wich gender so you just need to learn it by hard. Altough the weirdest part imo is how different it sounds compared to so many other languages, but thats just my humble opinion and i migth be wrong idk
    Love from Germany btw

    • @airhead3409
      @airhead3409 2 года назад +1

I mean, instead in English you have to learn how to pronounce each word which as he explained can be a rough guessing game. German is at least quite phonetic in its spelling - that is most words are pronounced the way they are written (the "sch" and "Ch" and "ie" aside).
Moreover, since you have to learn the vocabulary of a language anyway, learning the gender isn't that much extra work. Especially if you have a few rule of thumbs that make the guessing easier, like for example that most nouns that end on an "e" are female.
In the end, every language has its quirks and difficulties that need to be learned :)
      Have a good day.

10:30. Ooh! I like overthinking things! So the question is "why do we say 'isn't there' rather than 'isn't it'?"
    TL;DR
"There" is more appropriate to use when making statements or asking questions about something's existence while "it" is more appropriate for specific, pre-established nouns. This is based on tradition of the English language.
    The Full Breakdown:
Here's the phrase again for reference:
"...there is always room for improvement isn't it?"
This phrase features 2 independent clauses:
"there is always room for improvement" and
    "isn't it?"
The word "it" is a pronoun that serves as a placeholder for some other noun that would be appropriate to put in its place. Generally, pronouns are useful for avoiding repetition. The noun that "it" is substituting here is supposed to be implied from previous context. So now I ask: what is "it" replacing in the sentence?
As mentioned, pronouns take the place of a previously established noun. So now let's ask: what nouns can be gleamed from the previous clause that could be carried over to the next clause as the implied subject? For simplicity, I will rely on the understanding that a noun is a "person, place, or thing" and I will be using "noun" instead of repeatedly writing "noun/noun phrase". The first clause contains the following words that can be considered nouns: "room", and "improvement". So I present 2 ways to interpret what "it" is substituting:
"...there is always room for improvement isn't room?"
"...there is always room for improvement isn't improvement?"
Now, you may have noticed that I didn't include "there" as a possible substitute for "it". One could very easily interpret "there" as the subject of the first clause and should then be a viable substitution. The rather humorous twist is: "there" is also being used as a pronoun.
To back up a bit, I'd like to ask: what does the first clause accomplish in the phrase? I'd answer that the first phrase is a declarative sentence. Specifically, I'd say that the clause makes an existential declaration. The first clause speaks to the existence of "room for improvement". This means that "there" is being used as a substitute for a noun phrase like "in existence".
What this means for why "there" can't be substituted for "it" is that "there" is already a placeholder itself. To use a placeholder("it") to replace a placeholder("there") would be redundant.
This opens up another question: what is the purpose of the second clause? Why ask "isn't it?"/"isn't there?" at the end of the phrase at all? Typically, this question is used to see if the listener that the speaker is speaking to is in agreement with a previously made claim or assertion. The speaker is probing the listener for a contradiction to their claim to ensure that both parties agree with what was just said.
So, with this in mind, the respective phrases (after substituting in for "it") could be asking:
"Do you think what I just said is not room?"
"Do you think what I just said is not improvement?"
This presents a problem. The use of "it' narrows the scope of the phrase too narrowly. There is not enough evidence from the context provided which interpretation is the correct understanding of the original phrase. Additionally, both phrases leave out the "always" adverb from the original phrase, which may have been the part of the first clause the speaker wanted to check for contradictions for.
This probably of ambiguity is solved by making the second clause "isn't there?". The use of "there" has already been established in the first phrase to mean something to the effect of "in existence". So when the speaker is probing for a contradiction, the second phrase may now be read as:
"Do you think what I just said is not in existence?"
This opens up every part of the first clause to be scrutinized and disputed by the listener as any disagreement with the first clause violates the existence the speaker was asking about.
The next question would likely be "why can't 'it' mean 'in existence' as well?" To which, I'd say it's because "there" already means that, so to have two pronouns representing the same entity would be redundant.
Which THEN begs the question; "if the first clause used 'it' instead of 'there', would the original phrase's second clause be correct since 'it' now bears the implied meaning of 'in existence'?" I would say that this is a fair assessment, and I think that "...it is always room for improvement isn't it?" would be technically correct. However, there is a fairly heavy tradition of using "there" as the "existential pronoun" over "it", so that phrasing would still sound really weird to most English speakers.
Anyway, this went way longer than I expect. Hope you have an amazing day!
