Some people started using it during the start of World War II, as a provocation from the more pessimistic members of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, who said that "it was easier for a snake to smoke than for Brazil to enter the war". When around 25,000 soldiers were sent to fight in Italy, the expression became the symbol of the Brazilian Army;
