I'm Brazilian, born and raised in Rio. People outside Rio (both nationals and foreigners) often ask if this movie has any shred of truth, and I'm like: "Lol? Of course, and this is the light version of what really happens in Rio. "
This movie was based on Rodrigo Pimentel's book Elite da Tropa, who is a real former BOPE Captain and inspiration for Captain Nascimento.
All the actors playing BOPE operators received training from real operators, and Pimentel itself was present.
Really recommend checking the 2nd movie, Elite Squad 2.

@@GorgeousGeorge97 Corruption, bad public policies, our colonial past, slavery, you name it. Brazil's problem has its origins since the beginning of our colonization, they sent criminals from Portugal to live here and as the time passed the corruption inside the goverment grew a lot. When the slavery ended here, the enslaved people didn't have any money or place to live, that's when the favelas started and we had an explosion in crimes and social problems. In Rio this problem is much more worse, because the goverment is so corrupt and inefficient that there are many areas where police can't get in without getting shot by the criminals, besides that, the corruption is so deep in public services that some police officers also work for the crime, controlling and managing criminal business in a lot of areas inside the city. Also, we have many criminal factions fighting for territory and power, that's why Rio is so violent in terms of shootings and homicides. This doesn't happen in São Paulo for example, because only one criminal faction controls the state, as well in most brazilian states.

Rio de Janeiro is not Brazlian capital, it is not the Brazilian biggest city, it is not the most developed city, it is not the richiest Brazilian city. RIO JANEIRO is just a state capital, and the state is a mess overall. However, the movie pictures very well the reality in RIO DE JANEIRO, no one can deny.

I agree there. They have been fighting in close quarters like this for decades. They do however have the most dubious reputation. They are very much a “shoot first and shoot again” outfit. Municipal police groups were well known for very heavy hands especially before the World Cup in Brazil. Lots of street kids went “missing” and the crackdowns in the favelas were brutal. These gangs are extra violent. So it is reasonable that the response is equatable, but as Buck said, their lines are blurred.

You should definetly do a sequel on this with Elite Squad 2. They pretty much engage against paramilitary forces that nowadays run a good chunk of Rio de Janeiro.
And regarding Abel not seeing favelas run down as the ones in the movie, he was in São Paulo, the geography does change a lot of things. Not saying that there aren’t like those ones in SP, but the favelas in Rio are kinda unique.
And bear in mind that this movie was depicted like in the 90’s. A lot has changed since then, for better or worse.

I like what Sean said about rules of engagement. If you look at some Brazilian police detainment videos, specially when a policeman is on a motorcycle and pulling over a suspect, many times they pull them over with guns drawn. Several times it’s just an innocent rider pulled over. The cop apologizes for the scary approach and explains what they have to deal with when the person being pulled over is a criminal. People most of the time show their understanding and gratitude for their service because they themselves know they a lot of times are victims of those same criminals.

We managed to stay there almost 6 months without shooting at anyone (came close a few times, but no gun fights around our camp), but these guys started lighting up bad guys within a week of getting there it seemed.

It's important to contextualize their urban combat mentality in Rio. Those favelas are built on hills. When slaves where freed on Brazil, they moved to the coasts since the economy revolved around the interior with the farms. A few generations later interest in the coast increased and they were pushed to the hills. Those communities spread as informal parts of the city, almost like independent zones. There aren't police patrols there, if police is seen there, everyone knows they are on a mission. That's why some gang members' jobs is to look for police there and light fireworks to warn the others. This completely changes the operational mentality because it is either a stealth mission in which you blitz at the last second to complete it or a declared open invasion.

The director, while shooting the movie, was arrested by the real corrupt cops, for presenting them in a bad light, but because it's a fictionalized version of reality, not a documentary where they are named, they had to let him & the film crew go.
It helped that the governor, a corrupt pig as well, gave his permission, everything else didn't matter. Crazy.
Reminds me of "John Rambo", doing that movie while real corrupt soldiers, pirats & rebels were around them, they had to hire some of them, so they could shoot the movie, for protection. Some of the movie-rebels were real rebels, I think.

There is something interesting about the origin of the criminal factions in Rio x BOPE and their relationship with the Cold War.
The current reality in Rio is an unfolding of the clash between the Special Operations Forces of the Brazilian Army/Navy against Communist Guerrillas in the 70s.
The factions emerged during the Cold War after communist guerrillas were arrested along with highly dangerous criminals who shared their skills acquired in Cuba, with the Red Command emerging years later.
Parallel to this, BOPE emerged to meet the demand for a police unit specialized in resumption/rescue and irregular combat, with its first course directed by police officers who had completed the jungle warfare course and the army's special operations internship in addition to the counter course. navy guerrilla (currently COMANF) inheriting the culture of the blade in the skull from both.
Rio is an incredible place to visit if you stay in the tourism-oriented arena, but if you cross the line, you'll find out why Capt. Nascimento wasn't lying when he said that not even the Israeli Army has as much combat experience as the Rio de Janeiro police.

In one of these operations, army SF waited for nightfall and infiltrated the woods used as a escape route for the traficantes. When day came, the police started moving into the favela and the traficantes couldn't hold their positions. Their only option was to run into the woods. It was a happy day for all law-abiding citizens of Brazil.

Some civilians that get rough interrogation are thugs even if they were unarmed, they're called fogueteiros and usually drug guys employ kids to this kind of job. their duty is to launch firecrackers and make noise if they spot police going up the favelas to give bad guys a chance and early warning. It's funny to see people react to Brasil as depicted in this movie and have them think this is the reality of the entire country. I was fortunate enough to never have this kind of life. What fucks us as a country is not that everyone is poor, but some people are so far deep in misery that they get forgotten by society. In Rio de Janeiro, you can have a luxury condo for people with more money than god and right beside it a hill with thousands of poor people trying to get by.

BOPE has a mix of gun power.
      They're definetely at war 24/7.
They have SMG's, AR's, PT's, 12 gauges, LMG's, and of course precision rifles.
Not a long ago, a BOPE's sniper killed a thug who was trying to hijack an entire bus, and in the end, he took everybody inside that bus as hostages.
The sniper was on top of a fire fighter engine, under a red blanket, one shot - one kill.
Search this, you'll see a lot of content about this case.

I'd still like to see more SEAL Team here, and more episodes of The Unit.
Especially with The Unit, you get to skip half the episode avoiding the wife subplots, which means we as your audience get to watch longer clips and you get to do longer reactions to those clips because there's less story to cover.

BOPE IS special forces. They are technically military police. That is why they don't give a shit about taking out dirty cops. Those literally are NOT their people. They were originally trained by the Spanish Special Forces... back when they were under Francisco Franco.

The last scene was definitely cold AF. He started as the guy who was the intellectual, who wanted to be a lawyer, who did see the "grey zone" just philosophically disagreed with it. His friend was the real zealot who was all in on the violence and making it black and white. That last scene just shows his full transformation. He went from the nerd who was a bit timid and overly analytical, to the stone cold killer who could out think any of his prey.

This movie was recorded in a crimeless favela. It became crimeless not because of some police operation. It's not in the hands of criminal organizations no more only because it's close to the BOPE HEADQUARTERS, literally only because it's near the BOPE. That's how much feared the BOPE is.

"I'd do it If I was in a third country where I can do whatever I want"
So many americans have the wrong mentality lol
Only thing keeping the US from being a third world country is the GDP, brute and per capita, cause some of the big cities are having serious problems with police brutality, police corruption, homeless people and hard drugs like Fentanyl. I recommend Nick Johnson's channel, he goes by american districts that are struggling with hard drugs and homeless population like Skid Row. I know Brazil is not in a position to point fingers, but the USA is not exactly Norway or Finland right now. About São Paulo, it's not so similar to Rio as you guys describe, with kids stabbing people downtown; pickpockets are common, but RJ's violence is way more intense and I think that's what you're talking about. For comparison; São Paulo has a lower homeless population than New York City even though the area in NYC is smaller and overall population is lower.
Also gotta keep in mind that Elite Squad was released in 2007 and the movie is set in 1997. A few things stayed the same, but a few things changed too since then.

One thing that I think people didn't notice in this film is that the main reason for Captain Nascimento's stress is that BOPE has to abandon conventional and correct rules and operations to guarante the Pope's safety, then the community and society cease to be a priority due to political demagoguery, the Pope is the great villain of this film

Awesome react! Do a react on the second movie, they made two. As a friend said already, this is a light version of the reality in the slums, but the most realistic ever show to the world of how things are done. It is a daily WAR there for cops, much like gaza strip.
    Good work on the react!
