Oh dear...you are right. My brain is in my shoe right now! I have updated the description text awarding you credit for the spot. I will be calling it a Potentilla next🙈
Nice job! That will be a superb tree providing it makes it which I'm confident it will. I would say this is the perfect use of air layering. You have created a super potential bonsai from some otherwise average material!
Ha! I was just thinking.. I'd have helped 😂 great success with that air layer mate - text book! I don't think I've seen anyone air layer an olive before. You've got the green finger for sure. I've just got a small pyracantha cutting and am really excited to see it grow - so, thank you for sharing your lovely one.
In this instance I am using the wire as an additional barrier to stop bridging taking place. I am not using it to promote roots. Tis method is quite effective and widely adopted. I do use the wire tourniquet appraoch for promiting roots on ground layers or on juniper branches that are too awkward to airlayer. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Cheers
I have previously tried air layering a large garden olive tree but my usual problem - it just calloused over, no roots. So I gave up and found a little tree that wasn’t the typical garden centre olive standard with a three foot straight trunk…
Yes I was surprised it wasn’t a potentilla, but to quote a Dutch friend of mine”I couldn’t be asked”!! My phone is censoring your Short, I either get a pic of you sitting in d sun or a black screen, not sure which I prefer...🤣
Last episode today😢 Potentilla final n impressive item of yesterday’s, episode 6, check it out 🤩 Oh n nice olives btw as Connor would say ‘olives squared’!(he’s not just a pretty face!)
@@gayefanner731 Truthfully its just too much to watch with all the other channels and trying to do my own bonsai and videos. Life has got so much harder than it used to be :)
Hi Xavier, the original trunk which has all the new shoots looks like it will be a great little tree, i am a little concerned that there were not many roots on the air layer but that could just have been that they were difficult to spot on the video (the leaves also looked a little desiccated). i may have missed your reasoning for using purely sphagnum moss to pot in but if you have had success in the past potting into bonsai mix why did you change? I am keen to see how this one progresses, thanks for sharing.
Hi Andrew, this got classed as inappropriate for some reason - hence my delay in replying. This olive was a poor speciman and never very healthy so the air-layer was an attempt to get a shorter base. The air-layer worked and there are a good set of roots so we will see what happens. i am using sphagnum because Peter Chan insists it works wonders for him. I could have done my usual mix but sometimes it is worth trying different approaches. Who knows - I may live to regret that one.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Cool, no problem i will endeavour to be less inappropriate in future😁 Always good to try new techniques on material you aren't invested in too much.
Cheers - hopefully it does ok over the autumn winter. Im still debating about taking it out of the sphagnum and just going for a standard mix. i hate experiments.
You sure that was a pyracantha looked like a cotoneaster?

Sorry about the short Ive just done - it was a compliment really :)
Great success, well done.😀👍
Cheers Magnus. I liked your bamboo more😁
Well done on a successful airlayer.. hope to see and update on this olive 😃👍
The bottom is thriving and I will be looking at the air layer in another week I think. Temperatures are still borderline for disturbing the roots.

Thanks for that Tony. I was definitely surprised and happy with the result. I just seperated 3 more trees today. I had one fail.
Looks good Xav. Thanks for sharing - You've given me the inspiration to have a look at my Maple at the end of this month. 👍👍
My pleasure - I just need to check my maples next...
Great job Xav! Olive is off to a great start! I love the little pyracantha! 😍 Thanks for showing it. 🐦💙
My pleasure Jay. I was pretty nervous about this one...especially after the fail you haven't seen...yet :(

No worries Alex - Ive just removed three more air-layers. I'm batting 3 from 4 :)
I think the idea with a tight wire is to put it over the bark and cambium, not on the wood itself, which is already dead?

If its any consolation one of my layers didnt work at all. Very dissappointed and it made no sense.

Very witty - One day I must try and locate a real potentilla for the collection :)
Yup! Did you see Connor’s? Gorgeous! n the potentilla was pretty good too! 🤓
@@gayefanner731 is that the 19 part bench tour that Nigel is doing?

@@andrewbeattie5245 Indeed. I hope all the trees are well at your end of the country.
Nice, I never done one Air layer🤣
In that case we know what you will be doing next year😁
Great job on the airlayer

Love love love the cotoneaster!
My kids love it too. Sometimes simple clip and grow gives the best results. Thank you.
