This REALLY Works! Great Pruning Technique for Bonsai (Beech)
Four months ago, I tried a NEW Bonsai Pruning Technique. Using 3 Beech Trees (for comparison) I put the method to the test - you would NOT believe the results! I witnessed a BIG improvement in ramification and my bonsai will benefit as a result. You MUST try this too...
Tree 1 - Did not Prune
Tree 2 - Standard ‘Post Flush Pruning (May)
Tree 3 - Advanced Early Pruning (April)
Big Thanks to Jelle@GrowingBonsai who first showed this technique in his video:

If you are going airlayer it I would go for a tourniquet groundlayer instead of a normal one. That gives your tree more time to adapt and I think it will give it a bigger chance of success.

Hey Xav, I have a hornbeam with a very 2d root base, I found a technique where you drill shallow holes into the trunk where you want roots to grow, then fill those holes with a gel rooting hormone, I used clonex and a syringe, then cover the root base and holes with sphagnum moss and keep it damp over the growing season. This has worked great for me so far. I have lots of new roots shooting from the holes and through the moss. I have to keep covering the new roots lol. Maybe a good fix for these beech. I will definitely try this pruning on my beech, thanks for the video!

Thanks for the interesting video, Xavier. I never heard of successfully air layering a beech, so good luck on that. But air layering is in my opinion only smart if you want to keep the lower part as a separate tree. Do you? Otherwise put a tight tourniquet around the trunk and bury it deep. I think that might be more likely to succeed. For the tree with the two long legs I would think of making an artificial rock to fill up the gap. Remove the stub in the middle and use for instance slate and mortar to build up a pleasing shape which doesn't restrict the two roots in the future. Or prune the trunk to a few centimeters and wait to see what returns. Maybe a nice cascade? Or fit a nice pair of pants around its legs 😅

It's great to see that second flush of growth. It looks like you'll almost skip a year's wait for the buds further back to extend, which will give you more ramification and faster. It makes sense when you consider the tree has a preordained amount of foliage - if it can't get it from the strongest buds, it has to use the weaker ones. Thanks for the video!

Thanks! I usually use standard potting soil mixed with course aquarium sand. I now am trying peat less potting soil, but I don't really like it. It often is not composted enough and takes away nutrients instead of providing them. That's the reason I'm looking into alternatives.

Oh definitely cut the suckers off where you got the trunk bulge, that's why you have inverse taper. Look at all the scars from previous branches in that same area as evidence. As others have said the only fix for it is root prune the bottom roots in the spring and plant it deeper... scarring and hormone at the thickest part of base. Yeah, go for it with the carved deadwood (as a lightning strike perhaps) and lean it over, you got enough oaks to be able to try it on this one to make it a very unique tree!

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat

  • @rtregear
    @rtregear 2 дня назад

If air layering oaks is difficult, then doing so where half the trunk is dead at the airlayer point might be even harder? Would the dead area be good for carving? It seems extensive and you might get quite deep without affecting the live section - which by the look of the growth above it is quite healthy. Not sure it would look any better carved, but fun to try. It might be that after the carving you could twist the remaining trunk? That would be a Tony-level experiment but if it doesn't work, you can still Jason it with a chop way down low.

Like: making 3 or 4 narrow vertical slits divided around the thickest part off trunk. Rooting hormone on and pot it up deep. If that would work that would be great.(only a idea) greets and keep growing

When the nebari is to your likings. I would chop it right back to the lowest branch, for security. Although I think you don’t need the lowest branch for security, this should get suckers like crazy when you trunk chop it. No?? The routing will be the tough part probably. Whatever you do with it, have fun! Greets

Hi Xavier, thanks for showing the good and the bad ones. 👍 My Apple suffers from Powdery Mildew the same like your Turkish Oak 🫣 Noxious black dust fungal problem 😬 Thankfully I haven’t seen that. Your big oak- I would stay a little higher with the big trunk chop, as it tapers quite nice. 😘 Enjoy your day 🙏❤️ Cheers 🙋‍♀️ Martina

I was thinking the same thing, make it a sumo and see if it buds again. Great video again full of information. Bonsai for breakfast turns into Bonsai with latte around 9ish.

In small patches it is ok but when it gets hold it can truly destroy a tree :(

Hi Xav I didn’t have you for breakfast but for lunch and it was very nice to, I love that little sycamore shape and you cut it off, I agree with the tiny apple pruning, wooly aphids are a pain As I water each day I check for the blighters and blast them off, last year I had loads but year very few, did you know that you shake the branch they do a little dance you can see with a magnifying glass, still no reason to keep them, blast them into oblivion I say. My memory is so bad that I had to put myself watching the video TWICE !! Good luck with the budls not my cup of tea, Iron is very useful for bringing back the colour to the leaves, old timers I think used to put Iron nails in the soil as they didn’t have spray in their days, Finally leave that Pine alone, all the best my friend with washing.

Sounds like I'm going to be doing exactly as you advise. Did you say 'nails' in the soil...or 'snails'... :)

I was told my black pine can have yellow tips from burn or over fertilizing not sure if its the same for white pine or needles in general. Another thing ive been playing with for my trees is i take a pic of them and for some branches im not sure of removing i use the object eraser and remove branches on the pics and it does a great job showing me what the tree looks like with branches removed. Fun to play around with

I notice I get quite a few people sending me suggestions doing that with my trees. Great idea and never thought to do it myself. I must embrace this 'old' new technology :)
