It was 1976 when this happened and Cliff has told this story a number of times over the years. Im a massive Elvis fan and to me its not an issue. Whats not mentioned is when Cliff almost met Elvis in 1959 in Germany and there is home movie footage of Cliff knocking on Elvis' front door to meet him. Unfortunately, Elvis was on leave in Paris.

You only have to listen to Elvis Presley's live performance of Unchained Melody to see he blows any Cliff Richard performance out of the water by a country mile. Elvis was clearly very ill yet and still blew the doors off with that performance. Cliff is just jealous.

From what I understand, Americans don’t spend very much time thinking about the British as a rule. We are a small, distant Island that they don’t know much about and aren’t very interested in for the most part.
Elvis knew who Cliff Richard was for sure. He kept in touch and with the British music scene and British Elvis fans and celebrities. Priscilla personally told Cliff that Elvis knew all about him.

Cliff's speech about Elvis Presley is regrettable. Regardless of Elvis' physical condition, him rejecting "Elvis" for the sake of "weight" is a small thought. The importance of Elvis as an artist and human being is that he should be taken into consideration at this time and not his weight. Elvis, unlike Cliff, never made distinctions regarding people's color or weight!
Elvis was fat in the end or bloated with all his pill popping poor diet and lazy lifestyle. Those that cared about him should have stopped him long before it became too late. Don't cancel people who voice what is in front of them Elvis deteriorated it helped end his stellar career and life.
Those around him did try and stop him from the lifestyle he was living but Elvis took no notice of them and did what he wanted to do. He didn't like anyone telling him what to do either.
Elvis was ill and bloated, more than he was fat, and it was only at the very end of his life.

Given that Elvis' official cause of death was heart failure due to heart disease, maybe he would have lived longer if he'd experienced a bit more 'fat shaming' and used it as motivation to cut back on the bacon sandwiches.

I wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Elvis Presley as my mum (a huge Elvis fan) married my dad who was better looking than Elvis but had a similar look.

Elvis 1968 was beautiful, then the fried bacon and peanut sandwiches took over, 8,000 calories a sandwich, and he often had two of them, and all before bed. And no one telling him that this probably wasn't a great move.

I agree with Biggins and Cliff, at the end of Elvis life he was big and awful and people who idolised the image not the person. It was sad that at the end of his life he was heard to die in the bathroom and people who tried to help couldn’t get to him.

Amazing, if Elvis was my hero what ever I felt about his weight gain it would never be something I commented on in public, however Elvis got to be the size he did was his issue, we all have issues in our lives and I’m sure Cliff would not want anything said about him, but then I expect as he’s lived his perfect Christian life he won’t have anything in his life that he wouldn’t be open about.
Elvis was more bloated than fat, and it is a bit of a myth that it was caused by overeating. He was severely constipated. Cliff Richard said nothing wrong, and people are ignoring the point he was making, which is that he regrets missing out on the opportunity. Being fat is something a person should be ashamed of.
What about people who put on weight because of side effects of Medication?They might have health issues through no fault of their own.
So judgemental! People can be overweight for a variety of reasons and they don't need the judgement of someone like YOU. Cliff may not have meant to be rude but it came across that way as far as I am concerned. It was ungracious at the very least.

Elvis was a great talent but he died at 42 and near the end someone else off stage was singing bits for him and he couldn't even cope with a piano or holding a microphone. Somehow his inherent talent was still visible but he was a mess.
Cliff Richard might have been good singer with Shadows but he sucked. He gave a Concert in Stockholm and he never sang any of the old songs and he sucked that we walked out of the show.
