On the bridge an infected Sulu grabs Uhura by the waist and says "I'll protect you, fair maiden!" and she pushes him off and replies "Sorry, neither". This remains my favorite quick bit of business in the franchise. I have to believe that Standards & Practices just missed it completely.
It deserves an extra half star for the shower curtain hazard suits. To give the episode some credit, it's the only time that space explorers wore full protective gear when exploring an alien world. Ideally, they would be wearing their shower curtains to every world they visit.
It also appears that Scott's ability to control his emotions is greater than Spock's. (If you know Scottish people, you are not at all surprised . . . .)
As calm as they come, until you mess with his engines!
Why did Scott and Riley not start speaking Gaelic (and discovering the two dialects are not always mutually intelligible)?
This is my favourite episode of the first season, and second favourite episode overall, after Mirror Mirror.

I'm so depressed! Ohh, not really! However, I just started watching these great ole ST-TOS eps on Paramount Plus and they sure bring back good memories! If my math is right S1 began July of 65 and I'd just turned 7 in June and life was very carefree and good. I think my depressed shot came from just missing the folks and others. And when I lookup the various ST characters we've lost many of them too, damnit! Oh well guess that's just the way life rolls.
Those hand held scanners were odd . . . .
Spock meets James Dean in space… you have to love it!
I'm so glad they gave Sulu a fencing sword instead of Samurai sword. That would have been cringeworthy.
Great episode. Not perfect, but was a lot of fun and really dug into the characters. 3.5/5

n00b list? Absolutely not. But definitely on the comfort list for veteran Trekkies.

I'm so confused, is there a different episode where they all go crazy? In the one I saw they find another ship where all the people had killed each other. Then they all start going crazy
