Dude was a Shinigami for 2 years compared to minimum 100 years for anyone else in Soul Society and prioritized his growth on brute strength and speed, and put his trust mostly on this brute strength and speed. He always says "I want to get stronger," not "teach me some more fancy moves." I always thought it was very appropriate for the captains to have more techniques--it gave them a more cultured feel, which I think was appropriate to the situation.

When he returned to save Rukia at Sokyoku he was crushing lieutenants off blitzes. A Quincy soul bonded with Aizen's White for forming his asauchi. Ichigo broke shinigami records at Urahara's shop. Isshin is shinigami noble lineage. Like, him challenging SK Y'wach in merged-Bankai was built up to be more than "yeah, he could win that."
Like your point about the cultured feel. The Gotei are more refined in control, usually. They have their wildcards like the Kenpachis, but they have put in 100s of years of practice and Ichigo is just built different.

So Ichigo can't learn AT LEAST one other move, but it's ok for ichigo to go from someone who never used shinigami powers before to someone who is more powerful than captains within 2 years when it took captains centuries to get that strong. And him being a part of every race doesn't justify that fact. If anything, it means he has a higher potential than most captains if not all, but it should take him longer to master his powers since they are so diverse in their origin.

  • @lo4tr

Also, remember that Ichigo isn't exactly in a position to learn techniques throughout most of the series. Any time he has time to train there are more important things to focus on than learning specific techniques (basic strength training at the star, Bankai training during SS Arc, control over his hollow during Arrancar Arc, etc.) and you can't even look to the time-skip because, unlike other manga that do time-skips, Ichigo is powerless during his.

This makes a lot of sense. Especially when the story mentioned that whether a bankai was a true bankai or not came down to your relationship with your zanpakuto. Renji rushed to achieve bankai to save Rukia but ended up receiving a lesser one since Zabimaru didn’t respect him.
Even looking at Kenpachi’s case, he had been with his zanpakuto for so long and while he was insanely strong, he never had a relationship with his zanpakuto. He finally learns the name of it and gains a bankai that even his body can’t fully handle, resulting in his body ripping itself apart. It seems that a zanpakuto spirit must reach a certain level of relationship with the owner which can only happen once the zanpakuto feels like the owner is ready.

this coupled with his zanpakuto being a literal vice captain with her own zanpakuto manifestation and shikai(similar to ichigo and his zanpakuto issues) shows how much distrust he had in his own power due to failing to kill the first kenpachi and having no purpose but to fight. Based on how the zanpakuto are a reflection of their shinigami it seems somewhat appropriate that Zabimaru didn't respect Renji enough to give him a true bankai back in SS arc, as Renji himself at that time has like half his narrative plot points squarely pointed towards him having some form of self-esteem issue or otherwise being a contributing factor towards giving him reason to doubt his own worth or ability.
His origins in Inuzuri & how he was looked down on for it at the academy, the collapse of his relationship with Rukia, the strained relationship/ one-sided rivalry with his own captain, the insecurity he seems to display around Ichigo prior to his loss in SS regarding both his own power and whether he's doing the right thing supporting Rukia's execution etc. Even post-bankai acquistion, with Aizen saying that for his own plans sake he was the undesirable extra of his trio w/ Momo and Izuru.

@@knightghaleon I always interpreted it as Renji received his lesser Bankai not because he wasn't ready, but rather he didn't believe he was strong enough. Think about it, he always has an inferiority complex. Ichigo gives him trouble their first time, he loses their next fight and has to beg Ichigo to save Rukia, and then he desperately tries to rush to learn Bankai to save her. In his fight with Byakuya all he can talk about is closing the gap between them. In the Arrancar Arc he doesn't get too much of a focus, and ever since then he's been training to compete with Aizen. Then Byakuya gets obliterated and he's helpless to watch. Finally he passes Oetsu's test, realizing he was the one holding himself back, so Ichibei has no problem telling him Zabimaru's true name.

The older you get the more you know yourself (if you actually use that time to grow and learn) the more you can build a relationship with your own shadow and learn to accept the seemingly opposite you. The part of you that you cast off and sometimes even hate.
The younger you are (like Ichigo) the more likely you hate your shadow. Like Zangetsu would be someone Ichigo would hate. • @Rasea611
      @Rasea611 Год назад +2

My problem with how Getsuga is used is that it's never used creatively. It's very boring, except in one instance. I haven't read TYBW (and never will) and am currently watching the TYBW arc, so no spoilies.
But the only instance where Getsuga is used in a remotely creative way is when his white inner self (which I think represents his hollow side?) takes control of Ichigo's body during the Byakuya fight in the Soul Society arc.
In that fight, his hollowfied... entity, I guess. He says "I'll show you how I use his bankai" and then immediately demonstrates an advanced knowledge and usage over it. Arguably mastery. Instead of just it being a ranged energy attack (which is all that it ever realistically is), he instead uses it as a pressuring tool. We know that Ichigo has insane speed (it's one of the coolest parts of the whole fight), so he uses that in order to keep Byakuya constantly on his toes, making him constantly evade the Getsuga until he can eventually launch one that backs Byakuya into a corner, allowing hollowfied Ichigo to trap him and hit him with a Getsuga which does serious damage to Byakuya.
That's awesome, that's creative. It demonstrates that Getsuga can be way more than a ranged projectile. But Ichigo never uses it in that way (despite seeing the fight play out inside his body). He never gets creative with it once. It's honestly just so frustrating. We know he's not stupid either. So why in the fuck is he so incompetent with this?
It's so frustrating because the big advantage of having a character with a singular power is that you can develop, flesh out and refine that power. But that never happens here. It's the same shit every time, minus the aforementioned exception that isn't even Ichigo's doing.

    • @Rasea611
      @Rasea611 Год назад +2

Writing a separate comment so it doesn't get too wordy.
I don't know what it was with 90s and 2000s shounen protagonists being required to have boring as fuck power sets or one power that never goes anywhere. Often coupled with them being dumb as bricks (Ichigo's an exception since there's a line about how he works hard to not be an academic joke).
This is why I like the new generation of shounen. MHA's Deku has a fairly boring power set. You punch/kick things real good. But it gets developed. He can create powerful blasts of air using his fingers to turn his normally melee combat style into a ranged one (or at least give him the option). We also see that he learns to develop his power to provide him with incredible speed, giving him an insane level of acrobatic ability combined with the raw speed of his power.
Demon Slayer's Tanjiro has a multitude of moves at his disposal. Granted, the power system of Demon Slayer lends itself to this variety, but it's still notable and important.
Jujutsu Kaisen's Yuji has a boring power set on its surface. He uses hand to hand combat with cursed energy to enhance it. But even when he's barely grasping his power, he uses a delayed activation to increase the power of this technique as well as making it trickier for his opponents defenses to stand up. But even in the first season, this gets developed through the Black Flash. He constantly learns to develop it, learning the extremely precise timing in order to inflict major damage, as well as showcasing a constant growth in fighting technique between movement, evasion and attack styles.
"But Raisylvan", you might be saying, "the Demon Slayer comparison is unfair!". Ah, that's where you're wrong. Because Zenitsu exists. He stands out as the exception. Where most people have a variety of moves, he only has one. Yet it's used more creatively than Ichigo's and it gets developed as well. Initially it's a single slicing motion. But he gets a whole backstory about how he should master this technique, since it's okay if it's the only technique he'll ever know. Which he does. It turns into the Sixfold version, where he can chain it up to 6 times, which allows for a lot more damage, unrelenting aggression and to navigate complex environments while not compromising lethality. In season 2, we see him learn the ability to use his insane speed to move extremely fast for an extended period of time, which greatly enhances his lethality and makes his sword more powerful as a result.
So why does none of this happen with Ichigo? He never learns any new techniques (despite belonging to all 3 races), but that's fine. But there's no excuse for why his Getsuga never goes anywhere. Again, maybe it does in TYBW at some point, but I won't know until it finishes airing. But so far, it is such a bland technique he has that isn't developed in any way. There's no good excuse for it, as it has been shown repeatedly in other series that you can have a singular focused technique and develop it and make it interesting.

@@Rasea611 In regards to Ichigo not doing anything else with Getsuga Tensho apart from the Byakuya and Ulquiorra fights (maybe a couple more..not sure), I always thought of it as a character flaw. I remember him saying that the ability he gets from his Bankai is the insane speed (which was nerfed later on) which he was really proud of. However, I agree that the way he uses Getsuga Tenshou is incredibly basic. Though Ichigo's power set is incredibly basic, I think it's more of an exhaustion on Tite Kubo's writing. Whenever I see the captains fight (apart from Kenpachi) their bankai abilities are always very interesting to see. Byakuya's Senbonzakura has several applications in bankai form, Shinsui is by far the most creative even in Shikai form. Yamamoto also has creative abilities that I won't mention. If it's not Tite Kubo giving every creative thing he can think of to other charactes in bleach then maybe it's deliberate. It does make Ichigo stand out as he just continuously span 1 move in a world of creative powers.
I do hope Kubo creates new ways for Ichigo to use Getsuga Tensho in the anime maybe more akin to how White uses it and the sword in general (refering to Muramasa vs White).

It’s part of Ichigo as a fighter. He’s stubborn and strong willed. It fits his character to just keep forcing Getsuga until it actually gets the job done.
And to be fair, he had a yellow Getsuga, then the black/red Getsuga. He has times where he holds the Getsuga in the blade without shooting it off, so his sword was stronger. Nevermind the mask upgrade. A short term power boost IS a technique. Nevermind Mugetsu.

Great video! I think you could further prove your point by using Zaraki as an example. This is the only shinigami we know that has no relationship with his sword until TYBW, and what techniques he had? He could hit things, really hard. Oh, he could also hit things really hard with TWO hands instead of one. He was strong but did not have ANY techniques to back it up.
On another note, I think people often forget how SHORT is Bleach's main timeline, especially when compared to other shonen anime. It took about half a year from Ichigo gaining the power to losing it. It took about two months from Ichihgo gaining Fullbring powers to the end of TYBW. Ichigo didn't even have his powers for a year. Toshiro was considered a prodigy, and it was regarded as considerable praise for Shinsui to say that Toshiro would be stronger than him in about a hundred years. But even Toshiro had tens of years to practice and master his power, a time considered extremely quick. Ichigo didn't even have a year. Obviously, Ichigo did not have the time required to master his own abilities, not even close. It is not lazy writing. It was clearly said that for shinigami, those things take time because you have to build your relationship with your sword, which is hard and takes time. Especially if you don't know who you should make your relationship with.

You know the kind of things that puts him in the very top of Shinigami power with just him using Shinigami power(and then he can go beyond that eventually even at will since he admits that he has yet to master power on at will step). Then again him being so far above normal Shinigami in term of power was even shown when Byakuya goes Bankai the pocket dimension is fine, Ichigo goes Bankai the exact same dimension Breaks by his mere presence
and the whole getting three techniques not counting merging them which would give another 4 and this is just what he showed
Ichigo gets like 1/4 of the time to train as everyone else or even less in comparison while needing to learn 4 times as much

I feel like the time excuse is a copout for lazy writing. Kubo could've easily written a timeskip somewhere that allows Ichigo the time to develop his singular, boring ass technique or to learn new ones. Hell, the Garganta is used for that before the Aizen fight, due to the unique relationship it has with time.
I don't think there's a good, genuine reason for why Ichigo remained the way he did other than some weird desire to keep Ichigo's fighting style as boring as humanly possible.

Everything about Bleach is different: Ichigo is the main character but if you see how often he’s not in the story you wouldn’t be so sure. He also had no real reason to fight the main villain, Aizen. The fights in the Arrancar arc are very similar to the fights in the TYBW arc, with Rukia fighting enemies that become giant blobs, Byakuya fighting enemies that can mark and control things, Kyoraku fighting enemies with guns, Ikakku losing his fights, Toshiro fighting elemental types and needing the help of an attractive young lady to do so, Mayuri finishing his fights using Nemu, the list goes on.
And finally the biggest thing, Ichigo wasn’t striving to become the Pirate King or the greatest ninja ever. He just wanted to be left alone. Literally everything about this franchise is different.
Oh right! I almost forgot. The live action adaptation of this anime was actually good, most are known to be bad.

I think an important point to note is that Ichigo goes through the first few arcs of the show never using a Gestuga Tenshou, and in fact uses it twice without even KNOWING he does so. This is despite seeing several other Zanpakto users' released forms, all with their own special abilities and release commands; he never asks 'what about me, what can I do?'
He just fights, fights and fights some more. He trains with Urahara... by fighting, fighting and fighting some more. When he reaches an obstacle, he finds a way to climb over it, then keeps fighting.
This is indicative of Ichigo's thought process; he doesn't train to get stronger and then go on to win, he fights to win and uses those fights to get stronger. In a way, it's lucky Ichigo even HAS Getsuga Tenshou as a trump card; he discovered it by accident and without Urahara wouldn't even be able to do it on demand. Even 'Hollow Ichigo' claims Ichigo is pretty much a blunt instrument in both how he uses 'Zangetsu' and in turn the Getsuga Tenshou, with Ichigo not even using it in Bankai until shown how.
This can seem like a waste, but in essense it's Ichigo's greatest strength: he doesn't lament or covet what he doesn't have, he doesn't even CONSIDER it. He simply takes everything he knows he DOES have and beats you over the head with it. Ichigo attacks you and then he wins. If he breaks his hand punching you, only then does he realise he can use his feet... when he HAS to and not before... and then he kicks you until he wins.
And yes, that can be frustrating at times. It's the same as having a friend who always seems to succeed in the end, despite taking many thoughtless risks and often taking two steps forward then one step back. You try and explain to them how they could theoretically succeed 'better' or 'more efficiently' or 'at a lower cost', but it seems trivial to them because... well... they got their in the end.
But the secret genius of living like this is that it means living without doubt, without jealousy and without lament. Who cares if there's a hundred better ways to learn, or if there's a million smarter ways to accomplish an objective. Who cares if there's 13 captains and 13 lieutenants and an entire society to beat.
You try. When you fail, you learn from it and you try again. And eventually... you win. As long as you don't give up and never stop learning from your failures, you can fail forward until you win every single time. And I can say this with confidence, because I AM that friend.

And we've seen over time how Ichigo's form and Zanupakuto have changed, even if his abilities have not. Ichigo is one of the few folks to not receive an Asauchi, and for spoiler reasons, it is also one of the reasons why his Zanupakuto act the way that it does. I wonder about that though. Looking at the few Shiba members we know of, Isshin has a fire type and Kaien has a water type. I wonder if Ichigos is somewhat of an elemental type as well.
Obviously Ichigos is more complicated being that his zanpakto is inherently a fusion of Isshins and White, as Isshin fused his soul with Masaki and Masaki was fused with White. Which is shown by them both using getsuga tensho. I think this is also why his quincy side is a part of his zanpakto aside from just being a part of his soul alone because ordinarily I wouldn't think you'd be able to "mix" them together in that way. You may be able to use both sides separately but they are fused into his zanpakto which is a shinigami exclusive ability. Maybe that's not how it works but...

Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho also looks and functions similarly to a Quincy technique; collecting reichi and firing it off, not unlike a Heilig Pfil, and his Final Getsuga Tensho reminds me a lot of Letzt Stil, both in its very name and the way it temporarily supercharges the user, at the cost of almost completely snuffing out their spiritual power.
It's only natural that the Getsuga Tensho is the one technique that Old Man Zangetsu would approve of while he was his main spiritual power and still conflicted about whether he should aid Ichigo in battle, it's even possible that it's the only one of Zangetsu's techniques that he could imitate, which is why it is white/blue when he's not in Bankai and therefore not using White's power.
White Zangetsu on the other hand, was encouraging Ichigo's insane growth every step of the way and willing to step in if he was under great duress or incapacitated in battle.
I believe he was using threats to motivate him, because he new full well that Ichigo didn't trust him, so he played the role of the antagonist to the Old Man's role of the trusted mentor.

Kubo really did exemplify ShuHaRi in bleach's setting, look at any of the captains, lieutenants, or even many other factions and in all cases they're masters of one thing in particular. Zanpakuto have one specific trait to them that defines their method of use and their bankai forms further emphasize that. But ichigo's is a case of when unrefined it's big and unwieldy and the first thing he learns to unleash it's power is similarly big and unwieldy, but as he masters it it goes from swinging a massive cleaver to slicing with a scalpel, all while the other reapers tend to spread themselves thin and view tetsuga tensho as a basic move which leaves them surprised when it's so powerful. Ichigo is literally the concept given form to the point that even when Bleach itself surfaces vs Ulquiorra, for all it's mad flailing, it's incredibly precise, taking an arm in one quick motion, using just enough power to overwhelm Cero's and not hit his allies even in that state, indicating that his refined abilities still translate. Even his final form exemplifies this, a sword and dagger is a very precise weapon combo that relies on parrying skill generally, a skill we've seen Ichigo had mastered to defeat aizen. And then there's where the anime ended with that brilliant show of power and precision slicing the building.

I think that old man Zangetsu IS and always was a part of Zangetsu, besides Ichigo acknowledging them both as Zangetsu (which possibly makes it a reality anyway since it's his soul anyway), but before that when training, old man was in the inner world and taught him the name, unless imiss remember and it was White that taught him the name. Then he manifested old man while training for bankai, not White. Also Tensa Zangetsu took the form of a fusion of white and a young Ywhach which represents his Quincy side and until then both entities were shown as two different beings. Though this wasn't his "true" bankai, it was still a part of it.
Also, the nature of his Zanpakto is that it is a FUSION of Isshin, Masaki and Whites soul. Isshin fused his soul with Masaki who was fused with White. This means that there was Shinigami, Quincy and a hollow soul FUSED into what eventually became Ichigos soul. Ordinarily one could be an offspring of a human(isshin in gigai) and quincy but not the rest. Ichigos shinigami powers awakened with rukia but they were already inherent within his soul.
So, being that they are fused and not just different aspect of his parents, it stands to reason that his zanpakto, which is a mirror of one's soul, is in fact a fusion of all 3.

Excellent video I really enjoyed your content. Some additional points that I think either you intentionally skipped due to spoilers or you may have glossed over during your research.
Since Ichigo didn't know everything, including who his mother really was and who his father really was..... the very core of his soul was in flux. it was vague. unformed.
One of the oldest and most unifying themes in Shonen Manga and anime is self-discovery. exploration of who you are. what you are. where you came from, and where you're going to go forward in your life with this knowledge.
Since Ichigo didn't know any of this for 15 years after losing his mother so suddenly and dramatically right in front of him. Then not understanding that his seeing souls and dead people and such forth and Hollows or whatever and why this was happening.
Instead of learning all of this from his father and mother they kept everything from him.
This I see was Ichigo's first stumbling block. A complete and utter void of knowledge.
Then of course you entirely skipped (probably on purpose due to spoilers) the discussion Ichigo has with his father about meeting his future wife for the first time. fighting WHITE. what happened there who his father was years before and who his mother was and everything.
You also skipped who old man's Zangetsu actually is. and why he looks like a certain bad guy that will remain nameless. Of course because of spoilers.
I would have to double check but I believe you are incorrect. Ichigo is not a member of all five realms or was it six? seven? Ichigo is a human. a Quincy. a Soul Reaper. and a Hollow. Four Realms You forgot the Beast Realm where Captain Doggo the werewolf is from. Komomura? (sp?)
Either you were unaware of Kubo's statements, or you glossed over it, or skipped it. but there is a reason why Ichigo doesn't have a sheath for his sword and his sword is always in Shikai form before the full self-discovery and the ending of TYBWA.
Kubo himself made statements on his paid membership/Bleach Blog/Kubo Page whatever he wants to call it. He specifically made these statements to answer fan questions about why Ichigo's sword has never had a sheath. This sheath issue also brings into account why Ichigo's sword (in what you showed in this video from Manga panels) has such a very bizarre peculiar shape. with the white blade and the Black core. why it has a knife and a sword form DUAL WIELD! and what all of this has to do with the sheath.
Without Kubo's sheath statements (which I seriously hope somehow they squeeze into the anime!) Another aspect of why Ichigo is so funky won't come to public light!
But as I said at the beginning, that was a great video! I enjoyed the content! and I do agree!!! the relationship with The Sword and the wielder's soul and how they are both the same, but also separate, is a very good factoid to remember!

@@ResNovae i don't know 'exactly' what Kubo said on his paid access blog, but i do believe the sheath IS a literal and physical item. my examples?
1 every Reaper has a sheath. period. all of them. Ichigo is the only one ever shown to not have one.
2 Arrancar have sheaths as well.
3 Ikkaku Madarame. when he performs shikai he places the hilt of his sword against the opening of its sheath and so forth... therefore, with yes just one Reaper exemplar, the sheath and zanpakuto are two integral parts that interact.
4 i can't remember his name, but one of the Arrancar stores spirit energy in his sword's sheath and releases said energy by drawing his sword. that shows an Arrancar's sword and sheath can interact as well.
5 the sheaths of both Arrancar and Reapers' swords VANISH when Resurrección/shikai are performed. what are they? where do they go? why does this happen?

Toshiro did not have Bankai before joining the Gotei 13. It's explicitly stated that he is training for Bankai when he was a 3rd Seat in the Everything But The Rain flashback. Also, when was it said he already had Shikai before joining as well? Unless he killed someone who happened to have an Asauchi, I fail to see how that is even possible.

    • @ResNovae
      @ResNovae  2 года назад +7

      1. It's not a zanpakuto that gives a shinigami their power. Their powers already exist within them. The Asauchi help them imprint that soul and give it definite form. That's why Toshiro's reiatsu was freezing his grandma and he kept having visions of hyorinmaru
      2. Kubo stated on Klub outside that Toshiro unlocked shikai and bankai before he joined the Gotei 13. And the bankai training Isshin mentioned was most likely about his learning to control it, not activate it
      3. Literally every student of the shinoreijutsuin is given an Asauchi upon entrance. It's literally stated by Oetsu. Becoming a student of the shinoreijutsuin isn't the same as joining the Gotei 13. They're completely different things

Bleach is simultaneously so brilliant and simplistic when you accept one axiom: your zanpakutou is you. It really is that simple and simultaneously earth-shattering as a realization, and Kubo illustrates this esoteric point so well seemingly in the most bizarre ways like spats between zanpakutou and shinigami and a host of other manners, but it's just wonderful to see a world which is so deliberately conceived which, seemingly, abandons its own ideologies, in fact, adhere to them so strongly throughout the story

You make wonderful points for Ichigo's "relationship" with OMZ, and I actually never thought of it like that, the answer I have is much simpler.
Ichigo has had his powers for the Shinigami equivalent of a few weeks. On top of a sword that was actively sabotaging him, he simply didn't have a whole lot of time to figure things out. Not to mention that space of... What? Fifteen? Seventeen months? Where there was no communication at all.
Beyond that, as memory serves, there's not a whole lot of time between the arcs, and therefore not a surplus of time to talk with your sword.
Not to mention after attaining Bankai and dealing with the whole Hollow business, he never really put much effort into it.

If you do a little research the form Ichigo takes after Uquillora essentially kills him in Hueco Mundo is called Del Toro... The Bull... That name was used in one of the official mobile phone games for Bleach. as well as I believe in either Shonen Jump Force and/or Bleach Brave Soul games.
From my understanding Del Toro is WHITE the original Hollow that Ishiin K. defeated while it was attacking the future Mrs. Kurosaki.
Del Toro is possibly the FULL RELEASE of Ichigo's Hollow. In my opinion this is Ichigo's deepest instinctual need to kill. to destroy. to defeat anything before it. the killer instinct that Kenpachi Zaraki met during the Soul Society Invasion Arc... AND LOST TO even before Ichigo had Bankai.
You would have to read the Manga chapter in Thousand Year Blood War Arc where Ichigo finally talks to his father about his wife/Ichigo's mom and the fact that she was a Quincy. And how Isshin was a former Squad Captain.
As the only Arrancar that surpassed Aizen's theories of 'power' between Hollows and Reapers... Uqillora was ENTIRELY SURPRISED that Del Toro could defeat him. That meant that essentially Del Toro was beyond anything even theorized by Aizen who was supposedly the second or third smartest person ever in the history of the Soul Society.

Ichigo's entire character as a fighter is based on utilitarianism up until arguably his second to last form. His shikai is a big sword he hits things with. His bankai is removing the waste and refining his shikai. His hollow form is refining that energy and utilizing it's strength. Mugetsu was refining every ounce of power into one attack because he needed to. Ichigo doesn't have time to sit around and think up techniques, he's fighting against a clock every second of the story (at least when he actually has powers.) It's only when the story literally forces Ichigo to sit out the battle and train until he's ready that he develops anything beyond being faster and physically stronger (two swords.)
