First of all stop apologizing second of all, General Motors already announced they’re not gonna build a single electric car and they’ve already shut down the Bolt construction
The bolt is not a competitor. The only competitor I see if they catch on is Hyundai/Kia if they catch on because they make a great EV that is competitive as far as product. The EV3 and EV4 should be great products
Impressive how many Bolts were sold in 2023 considering they had already announced its production was going to end and it's slow 50kW max charging speed. Shows there is a place for low cost commuter EVs in the US.
They sold them at a big loss, GM lowered prices of the bolt to make sure they would not got stuck with tens of thousands of old Bolts in inventory, that would not sell anyways when the new one comes out. Will be interesting to see how much the New Bolt will cost, and if GM will be able to sell these at a profit and in significant numbers. To be honest, I don't think so, The Ultium Platform may become GM's waterloo, too many problems with that, unable to scale, obsolete heavy battery/drive train system.
Original bolt sales were production constrained. GM never ramped production capacity beyond 60k units per year, and articles I've read indicate GM never expected to sell more than 30k per year, and planned to sunset in 2024. The facility that the new Ultium Bolt production is moving to is capped at ~175k units per year, and GM is buying LFP batteries to build them. Not making and using the LG pouch cells being mass produced at their own Ultium battery factories. Meanwhile, Tesla is building their largest Giga factory yet in Mexico primarily to hyper produce their new compact EV. But sure, the new Bolt will be "competition" as distant #2, again.
Interesting to see various media views on what Tesla is and who their competition is. Most get it wrong. Funny how focused on the retail prices most media is when talking about the competition. There is no or very little attention given to if their is profit in these competitors vehicles. Most, if not all Western builders turn no profits on their EV competitors to Tesla in the lower cost vehicles area. Tesla has been clear the Tesla compact will be a profitable vehicle once it is ramping up. They do not have a plan to spend years flooding markets with vehicles that have negative profits to try and get market share. The Ultium should be rebranded Disappointium. Maybe GM will get it sorted someday, but so far execution has been a mess. I am surprised Honda is moving forward with their Ultium based EV. If there is competition to be feared, it is the Chinese builders with Mexican factories. This will give BYD and others a work around the US import tariffs on Chinese vehicles. Hearing VW or Hyundai or GM, is going to have a very low cost EV that Tesla should fear, I do not believe any of those will turn a profit. The Hyundai Group has been doing great things, so they might figure out what to do to make a profit on a under $30,000 EV, but time will tell. VW might get help from Li Auto and Xpeng getting something very affordable to market, but not sure how those partnerships will play out. Tesla will likely not get their compact to market until 2026, I know they said late 2025, but it will likely be 2026. Much can happen over the next two years. I just know GM has nothing that Tesla should fear, because GM cannot execute well yet.
I'm happy with my '23 Bolt euv for now (I got it knowing exactly what it is and isn't), and am looking forward to the 2nd-gen Bolt. GM has a LOT Of producing to do if they're going to get even close to Tesla's new model 2. I've been reading that the new Bolt will get an LFP battery, not the regular Ultium battery.
The Bolt is a great car. I think they will sell more if they up the DCFC charging speed to say least 150kW and use the NACS. A heat pump would be a massive help in winter.
Hope you're better. Great breakdown! The other missing part is Ultium is already behind on technology AND they can't sell enough to turn a profit. Their margins they don't want to disclose must be horrible or they wouldn't be dialing back.
Vw and kia have compacts too. They all face the same problem. Batteries are expensive. The thing about tesla is that they will find some way of making the rest of the car less expensive. Who knows, it might trigger a whole lineup of super cheap ice compacts. ..... thats the real competition.
There is also the point that the new Tesla model is supposed to have the newest generation of manufacturing efficiencies which will allow the price to come down without sacrificing other things. I doubt the Bolt has any such benefit.
I’ve heard the Bolt is a pretty good basic EV, and that its worst objective problem ( other than the early fires ) was slow charging. Maybe Ultium will fix that. I’ve grown a dependence on Tesla’s autopilot and charger network integrated navigation, so a car without those would be off my shopping list. GMs recent move away from Appleplay and Androidauto in order to hawk their inferior substitute bodes ill for the Bolt’s future as a long distance traveling vehicle.
I like my Bolt. I purchased my 2017 Bolt in 2020 for a total of 20k out the door(taxes and fees). Good deal. However, from my understanding GM didn't fare as well in terms of profits/loss on the Bolt. GM will not compete with Tesla on under 25k cars unless they actually make a profit on those cars. In a future where we shift towards electric cars, GM cannot offset losses with gas-powered cars that are no longer in demand. That in my opinion is the biggest question? Can GM make a profit with an electric car sold at 25K.
The Bolt is not a bad car. I think low cust. satisfaction has to do with how GM bungled the battery replacement. IMO, GM will never be able to sell the Bolt for under $30k and still make a profit, so your thesis that Tesla has nothing to fear is probably spot-on.
I'd say that Model 2 will eat into Bolt's sales rather than the other way round. Right now, a lot of people are buying the Bolt because it's the only vehicle in that price segment. Once there is competition from Tesla, people are going to compare apples with apples and realize that they are getting an Apple for the price of a Samsung if they buy a Tesla Model 2 (see what I did there?).
The EV Hummer is almost the same weight as the gasoline Hummer!!! Huge battery and electric drivetrain seems to make very little difference vs ICE drivetrain with gears and all mechanics, at least in that application.
Forbes left out an important aspect of success in the affordable EV segment -- profitability. How is GM going to reduce their cost to manufacture the new Bolt to compete with Tesla? Where are the cost reductions coming from? Just saying they will be able to produce high volumes of the Bolt is not the same as doing so. It will actually be HARDER for GM to compete in the low cost EV segment than in the luxury segment. This Forbes article is nonsense.
I'm glad you eviscerated that article by Forbes by stating the facts and calling out the FUD. We keep hearing ad nauseam for many years now about how the "competition" is coming for Tesla and yet time and time again it never materializes. In fact, Tesla just keep pulling even further ahead of the competition to the point where the "competition" now has little to no chance of ever catching up.
But, but, but... Mary Barra said GM will sell a million EVs and will outsell Tesla by 2025! Oh, wait, she said that in 2022. GM didn't quite make it. "We didn't execute well this year as it relates to demonstrating our EV capability and the capability of Ultium," Barra told investors and analysts last November. "In the next couple of years, it’s our years to really execute this new strategy so I’m energized," she enthused. She likes that word "execute", calling 2024 "The Year of Execution". Yep, the company that went bankrupt in 2008 and needed a $49.5 billion bailout is once again facing....execution.
Yeah, GM has been longer in the EV market than Tesla alright. Look up what they did to their cars. It's amazing how few people know this. They could've led the way in EV technology, but squandered it due to greed and sloth. Let them reap what they sow.
The Ultium Battery Platform is made from batteries supplied by LG Chem. There is NOTHING on the LG Chem list that is revolutionary or class leading. Furthermore, the LG Chem batteries has had issues. Which is why Hyundai / Kia have pulled away after LG Chem issues in the Kona. Only CATL and BYD have 2024 class leading batteries.
Well done on your sponsorship and the informative video. However it is some coincidence that you have symptoms of a sinus infection as you try this new product, It might be worth checking the ingredients to make sure you aren't allergic to any of them.
Porsche and Lucid are charging at 300 kw all the way to 60% SOC. I like the Cadillac Lyriq, but the Ultium platform is way outclassed. I am a live long GM customer, and hopefully Mary Barra gets fired and we get 800V Cadillacs soon in the future.

"bolt is just as good as model 3". Tesla's forthcoming next generation cheaper car will be built with their next gen PLATFORM. This platform is likely a much bigger deal than the car itself. It should allow Tesla to cheaply and excellently produce various vehicle form factors (van, minibus,/RV, compact, cargo, utility, etc.).
Yep, that blinded cult following that managed to make the MY the top selling car in the world! And kept the M3 in the top 10! Damn that blinded cult following!
Putting ALL your eggs in one "Ultium" basket, for the next decade, is an incredibly stupid move in a rapidly evolving market. While GM will be trying to smash square pegs into round holes, Tesla will be redesigning it's packs optimally for each platform and each technology development. This is the move of a company that has no ability to innovate (vs an extremely agile company that can spit out new AI generated design canditates in months)
GM and Ford’s software and hardware engineering are too car behind for me. When Tesla’s new low cost unboxed version comes out, Toyota will not be able to compete.
Mmmm let me see, Bolt or Tesla, sorry but it will be the Tesla every time, more efficient, more advanced electronics, software and charging network it's a no brainer for me or anyone else with a brain
Yes and no. The graph of the Bolt is skewed by the battery issue, if you take that out it's clear the Bolt did increase sales multifold. Yes, not in the same degree as Tesla but that's not the Bolt's fault, the Bolt was actually a better made car than the Tesla, although I'm hearing Tesla is cleaning up its quality control. The damage to Bolt sales, aside from the recall, was reviewers who didn't understand the Bolt's place in the market. First, fast charging should not be given the weight it does in reviews because EV's are a different dynamic than ICE's. You can't charge an ICE at home or get up to a full tank of gas every morning the way you can with an EV, most EV charging is at home the office or even the condo but reviewers seem to think everyone is driving across the country every week. You can take a 500 mile trip in a Bolt with no problems. If GM comes out with an ultium Bolt we may see sales rise significantly, we don't know, so to judge the future is not a cut and dry procedure. Let's remember the Bolt was the first long range affordable EV, beating Tesla by several years. Maybe Tesla will dominate but I think it's too soon to tell. The thing that dictates the future is technology, battery technology is still up for grabs, no one owns the market, if BYD or CATL comes out with a sold state battery (CATL is already making them), that's a game changer. Personally I don't like Tesla's automated cars they're not ergonomic to me, I'd rather have a glove box knob and turn signal stick, I'm not alone. Tesla does it to save labor and parts costs, not because it's better technology. People getting all excited over their absence of turn signals should remember that.
I think Tesla will eventually match the engineering and manufacturing prowess of Mitsubishi in a few years. Right now its pretty bad. Their products are rushed to market as clearly observable in the end product, constant running changes where almost no two Model 3/Y's are alike from one month to the next, and one million+ unit safety recall after another. It has been volume at all costs for the last few years at Tesla. Not quality and certainly not innovation. The risk for Tesla is that they are going to get squeezed from the top and bottom. BMW, Porsche, and others are going to own the top end of the EV market. Tesla has no hope here because right now their quality can't even match Mitsubishi. But at the bottom you are going to have a slew of manufacturers with many more decades of experience than Tesla at designing and manufacturing low end budget cars and this will saturate the market in a race to the bottom. Making money in the middle is the hardest of all. You can't charge high enough prices and you can't sell high enough volume, but consumers want the kitchen sink. It's very tricky in the middle.

How does the bolt win? GM will never make enough of them and if they did they would go bankrupt from the loss of each vehicle.
and you want an EV that actually works.
If they were making ANY money at all on them, they'd ramp them like crazy to reach scale, drop prices and load up their dealer lots a bunch more Ha!

Yeah. It's pretty ridiculous how the 2023 Bolt has 65 kWh battery and sells for less than $27k, yet it's not a hot buy.
I THOUGHT the sound was bad? my revivifier had that steenkeeng sinus inflection. Take care..
You can win any market you want if you’re prepared to lose money on every unit you sell.
The Bolt was a great city car with a terrible fast charging curve.
Bolt EUV will be a competitor if GM cures the abysmal DC 50kW fast charging of the old version. That alone was its worst 'feature'.
The Bolt is a great car. I think they will sell more if they up the DCFC charging speed to say least 150kW and use the NACS. A heat pump would be a massive help in winter.
The Bolt should be called The Dolt designed by Homer Simpson.
Hope you're better. Great breakdown! The other missing part is Ultium is already behind on technology AND they can't sell enough to turn a profit. Their margins they don't want to disclose must be horrible or they wouldn't be dialing back.
a lot of these shorts are trying to feed on Tesla but they didn't realize that Tesla is eating them from inside out
🙄🤦
Vw and kia have compacts too.
They all face the same problem. Batteries are expensive.
The thing about tesla is that they will find some way of making the rest of the car less expensive.
Who knows, it might trigger a whole lineup of super cheap ice compacts. ..... thats the real competition.
There is also the point that the new Tesla model is supposed to have the newest generation of manufacturing efficiencies which will allow the price to come down without sacrificing other things. I doubt the Bolt has any such benefit.
Thanks man! - Don't forget the 'Profit per unit' on the Bolt... How much does Chevy LOOSE per unit - vs- how much does Tesla MAKE?
@SamAlexanderRUclips Is there a reason you didn't use the JD Power 2023 study?
If Chevy is going to combine Bolt and EUV, it would only be fair to lump the 3/Y numbers for Tesla.
And then there is the fact that GM will continue to lose money on every one they sell, while Tesla will be selling theirs at a substantial profit.
I enjoyed your analysis, Sam. New subscriber here.
The EV Hummer is almost the same weight as the gasoline Hummer!!! Huge battery and electric drivetrain seems to make very little difference vs ICE drivetrain with gears and all mechanics, at least in that application.
Um, the EV Hummer is far heavier than the gas Hummer; actually, the original Hummer was diesel.
GM's "Groundbreaking Electric cars",..
Well, to be fair, a lithium fire does burn hot enough to fracture the concrete under it
So the roadster is Tesla V0?
Love your vids
The Ultium Battery Platform is made from batteries supplied by LG Chem. There is NOTHING on the LG Chem list that is revolutionary or class leading. Furthermore, the LG Chem batteries has had issues. Which is why Hyundai / Kia have pulled away after LG Chem issues in the Kona. Only CATL and BYD have 2024 class leading batteries.
The best part of the Ultium battery platform is it’s name. Good job with the branding GM.
The neighbors on my block that are voted lest likely to succeed have two Tesla's in the driveway. Something sus.
Good one.
A delight as always. Get well, stay strong my friend
Ultium battery is cheap and very, very heavy. Lyric is heavy, hummer is heavy, new bolt will be heavy. Heavy is less safe, and less range.
Well done on your sponsorship and the informative video. However it is some coincidence that you have symptoms of a sinus infection as you try this new product, It might be worth checking the ingredients to make sure you aren't allergic to any of them.
🔌🔌My next budget smaller EV will hopefully be an Aptera🔌🔌
Porsche and Lucid are charging at 300 kw all the way to 60% SOC. I like the Cadillac Lyriq, but the Ultium platform is way outclassed. I am a live long GM customer, and hopefully Mary Barra gets fired and we get 800V Cadillacs soon in the future.
Why be a lifelong customer? I don't understand the one way loyalty
Man I love your analysis.
:) thank you
If the 2 costs $12000 - 15000 to make and the $25000 Bolt costs $25000 to make how can GM win ? Win going out of business before everyone else.
I am a live long GM owner. The Bolt is a joke, at max 50kw charging. Tesla Model 2 is going to be far superior.
How much did GM pay Forbes to publish this drivel from GM Marketing? Who The Frunk do they think they're foolin'?
Get feeling better.
After models S,3, X,Y and Roadster, shouldn't the next one be Tesla 6.0?
Palantir
Try Raw Honey, has medicinal qualities. a little great for sore throat. make sure it's raw honey and not pasteurized or cooked or it loses it MOJO
You’re a genius 😂😂😂
5:06 Sam, with your cold and clogged sinuses, I consistently understood your "fragrances" pronounced as "pregnancies"; just wanted to let you know such substitution made this advertissement very entertaining and interesting! 👍🏼🤭
How's your vitamin D3 levels?
I hope someone can oppose Tesla. Competition is good for consumers.
LOL... this is a repeat of the 1st Gen Chevy Bolt that would crush Tesla. How did that work out? The main stream media is still hatin' hard on Tesla!
"bolt is just as good as model 3". RIGHT. and 'body positivity' was just GREAT for sports illustrated & victoria secret too. lmao. they win in the "it's just better because I said so" category. even more hilarious is that bolt made US news & world report's "tiniest cars" list- along with mini-cooper.... as if having to compress your spine to shoe-horn yourself into a car wasn't annoying enough- no damn way am I paying for GM's POS battery & fiat 300 sized egg basket instead of a tesla model 2. suck it forbes.
so in 2024 media still think EV market is separate then car market? interesting
Bro can you do a story on potential of $GOEV getting a USPS contract?
This guy needs to keep up with the news. If I understand it right, GM discontinued the Bolt within the last couple of months.
Whisky might help better though 😏 get well soon
Dr. Buchan's cold cure: "Hang your hat on the footpost of your bed. Lie down in bed. Drink whiskey until you see two hats. Go to sleep. In the morning you will still have a cold and feel like hell, but at least you will have had a good night's rest." Dr Buchan's Domestic Medicine, William Buchan (1772).
You have to wonder about the motivation to write that article
The Bolt is a great car but Chevrolet has failed to create a blinded cult following so competing is hard.
Yeah. And Tesla buys batteries from multiple, innovating battery suppliers..
The Bolt wins😂
Model "8." To honor Shanghai workers. Huge psychological advantage in China.
Why wouldn’t the Blazer win? The Blazer is already out there. Oh yeah! The Blazer SUCKS! Proven.
Yeahhh right.
GWS...bro
@@KungPowEnterFist Let's remember this isn't the first time Tesla promised an affordable EV.
Man ur great, xhill af 🎉❤
Jeez...between this and Ford's secret car(s), Tesla looks doomed again. Gotta get rid of my TSLA...boo hoo!. /s
50 kw fast charging dooms Bolt
Guess thats why that stopped making it ;)
TESLA
