I vote yes to continue these “chats”. My question would be “Do you have any tips on choosing hiking boots?” It seems like there so many choices and such a large price range, that it becomes very confusing when trying to make a good choice.
Thanks for the feedback on moving forward with this series my friend. That's a great question by the way! I actually did a video on that subject awhile back. I'll include the link for ya here :) Hope this helps... ruclips.net/video/TU5BzZiL8O0/видео.html
Hi IntenseAngler, my name is Martin I am from Argentina (south america). My concern about a topic that I would like you to talk about is : How is that people used to hike trials back in the 60´s...70´s or even 50´s ? How is that they make it posible to go from point A to point B in a 6 or 7 month period of time ? Because nowadays people who call themselves "hiker trash" seem to make laugh and consider imposible to make it without light or ultralight technology gear of the 2000´s, so I´d like you to speak about that because that tecnologie in my country it´s or super expensive or even more, not able to even buy it cause it doesn´t even exist. Thanks
Hi Martin. Really cool hearing from you in Argentina. That is an excellent topic by the way my friend! You raised some very good points that I will definitely be covering in an upcoming episode. Thank you for taking the time to suggest that. All the best....
I hope so im excited you aint gonna bail out again r u nice seen you again like every 6 or 8 months. love you bro I have know idea what is going on in your life. PEACE
The technology in both design and materials has gotten better, so some people pay more than others so they have a lighter load. People hiked, but just with heavier packs.
Hey John. I might see you in the Sierra this summer! Pretty cool you're doing the JMT. Hit me up if you need any info since those are my "local" mountains. Happy trails ✌️
Good video John. I would love to see more of the woods and lakes around where you like to fish. The fireside chat is cool. John Muir trail so cool can't wait to see the video. Thanks John
Thank you very much Robert. Hope to be uploading a trip video or two soon featuring some of the amazing places that I'm very fortunate to get to visit so often :)
Lots to look forward to. I want to hike the JMT someday so I am looking forward to your trip. I use so many of your tips all the time. Most recently the smokeless fire, the tinfoil trip lines and the bread bag paper clips.
Definitely excited about the JMT trip this Summer, that's for sure! Hope you get the opportunity to hike it soon as well. Really glad to hear that some of the tips have come in handy by the way. Thanks Bruce!
Nature Calls Backpacking I know I’m wanting to do that as well. I grew up hiking/camping every weekend and since I have had my first child I’ve been “grounded”. Now 15 years later, two more children and I’m still sitting around watching and waiting for the right time. Idk if it will ever come as a right time?! I never had friend or anyone interested in going and felt a lot overwhelmed with taking my boys out alone. Long story short I feel as tho they don’t know nature like I grew up with and it’s sad. Tfs your stories and adventures, John;))
If you consider trying backpacking / hiking, think of some interesting challenges to test yourself. Having something to do, try or see is important to me. Detailed maps are often a big inspiration. Watching John's videos too, go out and try John's tips, maybe think of more uses, be creative with what you got.
Love the DIY videos, bro. Would love to see some ultralight packing that includes fishing equipment. BTW, I buy a LOT of camping gear at Goodwill. I've gotten hundreds of dollars worth of high-end camp cook kits for pennies on the dollar. For some reason tho, I just can't ditch my Foster pot. I'm a DIY junkie.
Nice Chat! keep the videos coming! I would enjoy seeing your next adventure from start to finish. I enjoy your light weight backpack ideas. How do I make a suggestion for your tip -of-the -week?
I would love more tips and less chat. I have been camping for a long time, I love it when I can make myself more comfortable in any situation. But that only comes from experience. On your first question the guy wanted to quit camping, as you know it is good to know how to take care of yourself when you are in a primitive situation, like if you get stuck somewhere or lost. It helps to have experience so you don't panic but are a thinking person. When people want to quit camping they lose that skill or never develop it and are in real trouble in situations like being lost or stuck and often it turns into a death sentence, because of that lack of experience. The whole idea is to be prepared and experienced so you can make yourself more comfortable when in the wild. Your tip on DIY is good and I know you have done many demo's on how to make your own gear at little to no cost, yet it works. Thank you for those tips, I have used a lot of them. I have made cozies and other things out of that mylar coated bubble wrap that have been really good tips. I also work with wood and it is amazing how much you can do with a knife, saw, chisel and a good way to drill a hole. I like to make things for camp while I sit around a campfire. Not just whittle, but I have made shelters without cordage, tables, chairs, benches, traps, etc... nothing you can't do with just a few hand tools. One of my favorite projects was a top quilt I use it weighs about one pound and is my normal bag. if it is cold I mad some goose down booties that go up to my knees and a small top quilt that attaches to the bigger one. I have been toasty warm down to about 9 degrees farenhieght, yet both top quilts and the booties weigh under two pounds and cost me about 40.00. Another thing I am always tweeking is my kitchen set. But you just can't do those kinds of things unless you are out there trying them out.
Definitely looking forward to more fireside chats.wall tent series will be interesting. And with the season of mosquitoes just around the corner any DYI’S/tips to help battle those little bleepers 👍
Starting in camping tip. Pick your season. In best weather you can start with a swim air mattress, blanket, cheapest tent, light fry pan tin coffee pot and “comfortable shoes”.
Thanx for the tips and will stay tuned to your fireside chats, love the theme and am looking forward to being at my own fireside. the mylar layer is great. was worth my time subscribing to you vids. keep it up!
Great advice for the first timer. I would have said the same. Go on a day hike first to see if you even like being out doors and in nature. Then if you do like it work your way up to an over night camping trip. Be sure to take water, snacks and a first aide kit and you'll be good to go.
Hey John! Glad to see videos up and running again! Hopefully all works out for that big backpacking trip in cali. I have some great fishing tips for the high country trout fishing.. which im sure u already know. Let me know if you have any questions about the john muir trail too it’s totally awesome. I hope you catch a golden trout assuming you are gonna fish! Good luck my friend! -Kurt
Definitely plan on doing a bit of fishing along the way... too much water to pass up ;) Appreciate the offer on the JMT info by the way... will have to take ya up on that for sure. Thanks Kurt! All The Best.... -John
Thanks. I like to go out and sometimes stop. Thanks for saying, just go out and enjoy outdoors way you want. Loved the car shade idea. That is Fantastic! Thanks.
John, I still have my first boy scout pocket knife, how about you? Scouts and family camping trips were a big part of my childhood. Got to go backpacking at Philmont scout ranch in New Mexico twice. Then I was really hooked on the outdoors. You got any stories? - Dee
missed u john! i still have that awesome ultralight backpack you made for me :D soooo awesome you're doing JMT!!! It's been my dream and Im gonna hopefully hike it within the next year :D was it hard getting a permit??
I discovered your Channel about 3 years ago when I start looking RUclips for topics on DIY outdoor stuff and I am very happy to see you are coming back 👍👍👍 I read in others comment one gentleman from Argentina asking you to cover the subject of old school backpacking which is not what we call those day light or ultralight backpacking. That could be a very interesting topic because sometimes people think They cannot do it because They could not afford those high end piece of Gears and/or think that it's going to be too heavy etc... Coming from those old days I remember that we rarely hike and go camping alone so we were splitting the weight. My ultra light stove at that Time was a Optimus box stove 111 that many today will consider impossible to carry 😂😂😂😂
Camp fire talk, What is some of your favorite gear? And not so favorite gear? I've been subscribed for at least 5 years, didn't start leaving comments until a few years ago... (before the break) Are you going South bound or North bound on the John Muir Trail? Nice to have you back...
Always great to see you out and about man ! Really exited for you and your JMT hike ! I think the series is a great idea. You are a gold standard on RUclips my friend ! Hope things are well my friend ! Peace ✌️
Thanks Warren... very glad to have you along. I have had that same issue by the way... I found that if you put a few small dabs of silicone caulking on the pad's bottom, it doesn't slip at all. Hope that helps... :)
Awesome John, "of course". I like this series and I think you should continue with it. My favorite videos are always your actual backpacking trips. My suggestion for a fireside topic is to discuss some of your favorite backpacking memories or experiences. So, what is one of your favorite backpacking experiences?
I hiked the John Muir two years ago and summited Mt Whitney -- what an amazing time! My best friend and I spent the night in Lone Pine at the hostel there. I highly recommend visiting there if you're in the area. I'm actually planning on going back July or August myself, hope to see you on the summit! Ps. My profile pic is actually from the Whitney trail camp, haha
Well John: Looks like some interesting times ahead When I started tripping I had a backup for almost everything. Now I feel better if one thing has 2-4 uses. Thanks Brian 77
On the saving money topic, another thing is buy clothing and equipment that doubles for everyday, like hiking boots, and certain clothing. Also, when it comes to off brand, find things that could be used for backpacking or car camping, like a small one man tent. Also, sleep in clothing at night that keeps you warm, and also can be worn during the day, like a cheap packable down jacket or vest and long underwear. Then you can buy a little cheaper and lighter sleeping bag.
I never saw the beginning of this series back in the day but I'm glad you've brought it back around, John! Once again, so glad to see you back in your element and seemingly at peace. Keep it up, and stay safe buddy!
Hey brother, like these new video's! I got a question, what excuses have you used to stay out and not come back to go to work? Lol! For real though, I could use some good one's. Lol
Another option is to check some of the stores, some rent equipment as well, we have one in town that you can rent tent, packs, bikes just about everything you need to get outside.
It is really great to see you back these days.... and with purpose! I've always enjoyed your content and am looking forward to anything you'd like to share from here. I've never felt disappointed. Keep it up John... awesome!
I LOVE your channel! One topic I think would be useful is tips/help/guidance for finding local trails where camping is allowed. I think a lot of beginners are scared of accidentally breaking the law.
Good morning my friend... sure do hope it's a fine one for ya. Ol' Kado is sitting here by my side as we speak :) All the best to you and yours Ter! -John
Thank you so much for that my friend. I'm really missing the community (such as yourself) a lot too. I'm actually planning on uploading new videos again here soon though :)

Thanks Bill! Sure hope you get the chance to get out and enjoy a little coffee around the fire this weekend. All the best my brother.... -John
Jon I will be looking forward to the new videos and content. The John Muir trail is amazing. Enjoy the fire throw a log on for me.

Denali is higher than Whitney and on the same continent. I think you meant it is the highest mountain in the contiguous states.
