Story behind this song: You probably heard RM and Suga caught a lot of flack from the underground K-hiphop community when they signed on with an idol company. In addition to that, people would try to shade his rap skills, saying that he had no flow and no speed. So he made this track as a "joke" to show off his flow and speed, and in it he also shades back at that criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense, what's the point? Hence some nonsense verses like 'bibbidy bobbedy'. RM's flow is not only nice, it's intelligent and in ways I don't even fully understand because you'd kind of have to get Korean culture and sayings to fully grasp the wordplay. I have one favorite line in this though, it's in English when he goes "I *told* you that I'm a MONSTER."

That’s why his beat changes like 3 different times. The lyrics aren’t supposed to make sense because rappers now a days just rap about money sex and drugs. Like they have no context or meaning like how Tupac did in a lot of his songs. It’s a lot to take it but once you look into this to really understand it, it’s so dope.

not sure if you’ll see this, but in korea there’s a distinction between “kpop idol rappers” and underground/k-hiphop rappers. rappers in kpop groups are generally perceived as not ‘legit’ and only designated as rappers because they can’t sing (which, in a lot of cases, is true). k-hiphop rappers are rappers by trade, just like any of the rappers you’ll see in the U.S. the original concept of bts is to blur this line - bts IS a kpop group, but the rappers in bts are rappers by trade, and they have the skill and artistry to prove it. there’s plenty of talent in khh, but i think the impression that khh artists are innately more talented than the bts rapline is untrue. this is just my opinion as someone who got into khh and kr&b before ever listening to a single kpop song.

YES thank you! BTS are the perfect bridge between the hip hop underground scene and kpop. Actually, add to that Korean music in general. They're their own thing and present the best elements from those 3 areas.
They have the Korean "han", the kpop visual aspect and the hip hop bars (k-hiphop is not all that, tbh. There's good and bad in there as well, as in any music scene. The glorifying of k-hiphop never sat well with me for various reasons).
What I like about BTS' rap line is that they've found their place as rappers, lyricists and producers, yet they keep on working on improving themselves even further.
They have their American hip hop artists they look up to, and a few Korean ones too, and now they're at a point where they grew as people and as artists and they learned from those role models in the music scene while developing their own style with their own flows and lyrical skills.

This song is called Joke because it's a Joke literally, the translation to English have 0 sense because he use a lot of Korean playwords and metaphores, but you can check out the lyrics, there are some diss. Also this was made to show his flow and fast rap, because so much (underground) rappers (who criticized him) just are fast but actually don't say anything, just like Joke, anyway he killed the beat!!!
RM is my bias and I can recommend listen his Mixtape with subtitles, he said a few weeks ago, a new Mixtape is coming so wait for it too.

You really need to read the lyrics while listening to the rap again, so you can hear where he uses English words and lyrics and where he uses Korean. I think you will be even more impressed when you hear how well he blended the two languages and made it all flow and still make sense and never broke from the point he was trying to make.If you read the lyrics while listening to the rap you can totally hear the difference more clearly.

Rap Monster is a rap monster for real. You wouldn't normally expect a high-level skilled rapper like that to be part of a mainstream pop boyband like BTS. It makes sense why BTS is so huge unlike any K-pop band before it, because it has legit talent.

From what I heard, RM have had breathing problems until recently when he got surgery for it, so that means that when he was rapping like that on Joke, he was rappping with breathing problems. If RM would release his next mixtape, expect it to be more lit!

it's been days so someone might have already said what i'm about to drop here but i'm too lazy to check so i'm just gonna go ahead. the thing with the korean rapper scene is that it's normally split into 2 fronts.
there are the "idol" rappers who one can see in kpop groups, these people do rap but they aren't authentic rappers, meaning that they don't write their own lyrics or have any relation to creating their beats, they just get the rap parts in songs and rap it to their best abilities. most are trained into the role. these people only have rapper as a role to fill in their groups and are people who don't actually have much relation to hip-hop or anything of the sorts. it's really just a role to fill in the group. this is what 99% of kpop groups have (for example EXO, i think i've seen you guys reacting to them so i'm bringing up them as an example you might be familiar with.)
now the second front is the underground rapper scene. this is where authentic rappers are at and come from. they make their own stuff, they have everything you'd expect from a legit rapper scene. now the thing is that the underground scene, understandably for most, look down on idol rappers. for one because they are just not doing their own shit or have roots in rapping, and for two - because they are associated with labels. so they have a company behind their backs to push them forward.
now the thing with RM and SUGA is that they are a very rare case where they came from the underground scene but are also considered idols. they are *technically* idol rappers since they are in a group, signed at a label. but besides that they are 100% authentic rappers who were already known names in the underground scene at a very young age. SUGA's been making beats since he was 13 and same goes for RM rapping. so when they signed with a label they were called 'sell-outs' by the underground scene and got a lot of flak for it. (nowadays more and more underground rappers get signed though, so it's dwindling down to people just being pressed someone is good enough to be signed.) most of their solo works touch on this beef in some form, let it be direct diss or just bars about finding their own identities in this middle-ground. the whole cypher series pretty much has the imprint of this.
same goes for this song 'Joke' which RM made as a satiric piece aimed at rappers who think just because they can rap fast they are the shit. that's exactly why when you try to look up the english translation of this song you won't find much cohesiveness in it, because RM literally just put words after each other without much sense as long as they rhymed. the utter nonsense he's rapping lyrically clashes with his insane delivery, flow, techniques, pace, and that's the satire. it's a highly intellectual form of dissing underground rappers who threw dirt at them despite lacking sense in their own bars. RM is a very strong lyricist, i'd even say that out of bts rapline his form of rapping is the one that shades you with how clever his bars are. so he took it upon himself to say how people who think rapping is all about saying words that rhyme fast are a JOKE.
most of rapline's songs all have backgrounds and i could go on and on, but the main point is that BTS is a rare case of kpop where their rappers aren't just there to fill a role but have authenticity. but i wanted to let you guys know that *that's not the norm for kpop groups*. i can maybe list off 4-5 other groups that have a member with legit rapping background. BTS hard-fought for their creds and respect and now they have it even from the underground scene, especially RM and SUGA.

Everyone has to learn somewhere and people are usually willing to help with the Kpop, RM & Suga are the best to check out to understand BTS the group itself as they are the main lyric writers, Jhope as well. But keep in mind this was around the time the boys were criticised for being Kpop when they were underground rappers, as you notice Kpop can be about cute outfits, makeup etc. So they came under fire especially from BFree. The title of it is “Joke” because basically the lyrics...don’t make sense? In that way, it’s a ‘joke’. It’s just mixing Korean/English puns/metaphors, and nonsense all to show off his flow skills. This was from his RM mixtape. The background instrumentals are from Run The Jewels ‘Oh My Darling’.

When RM release joke, there was a "beef" between korean underground rapper and idol raper, rapper use to give Suga and RM a lot of shit for leaving the underground world to become idol. So people wouldn't take BTS rap line seriously and they used to mock RM telling him "oh you can't rap fast" "you are not doing it right" "you don't know about HipHop" so that's why he made this song and called it Joke, he is basically mocking people who tell him that he can't rap fast or doesn't have "flow" and think that just because they do mumble rap (the bibidi babidi part) or rap fast and general that means they are good rapper. So this songbis pretty sarcastic and a parody to krapper who think they're the shit and it's very metaphorical.

I'm not as well-informed about hip hop but so I don't know anything about bars or rap speed, but here's what I've heard:
BTS rap line is probably as diverse as you can get in the kpop idol scene. Each has their own style, flow, lyricism, you name it.
RM was inspired to write Joke after getting dissed by rappers saying he couldn't rap cause he had no speed or flow. That's why he kept "changing flows" and rapped "Bibidi babidi bubidi babidi nimini namini jirimi chakami" fast. RM said himself that he enjoys focusing on the meaning behind his lyrics rather than most rappers who just add random words without meaning for rhyming. He's what I consider the "lyrical-type" rapper, who cares more about his message than flow or speed. So RM isn't really a "speed-type" rapper, though he can be if he wanted.
If we're talking about speed, Suga/ Agust D I believe is one of the top 3 (if not #1) fastest "kpop idol" rappers with an average of 11.4 syllables per second under his belt (but I've also heard he can do up to 14 syllables per second in cypher pt. 2 so I'm not quite sure). The ranking is always under debate so while others say he's the fastest, there's always someone who disagrees.
And I believe JHope aka Hoseok is the more "flexible-type" rapper that can adopt a lot of different flows. To me, his rap actually sounds melodic, as if he were singing. But well, you've heard his mixtape so I bet you can be a better judge of his rap-style.

there's nothing i love more than seeing people react to this song lmao. and as others have said, the lyrics to this song contain a /lot/ of korean wordplay & metaphors so some parts of it may not make much sense. this song was written not only to show off his speed & flow (he was criticized sometimes for not speed rapping too often, even tho we're all aware that he's capable of it), but also as a way to sort of criticize rappers who rap about nonsense. he showed people that he can do the same thing as them (speed rapping with lyrics that don't necessarily have a deeper meaning) & he can do it better too! thank you guys for appreciating him!
