if you spam slide and boost in the same time you can go way faster in all 2d sections (cyperspace and open world) and if you're in 3d you can hold the quickstep button and boost to go faster
I theorize that the rails and floating platforms are actually made to fit the users (in this case, Sonic) preference. He is used to jumping on floating platforms, whether due to magic or Eggman Tech, as well as grinding on rails that have some risky turns and twists, that's also why I believe the minigame on Chaos Island was pinball because there really isn't any reason for it other then that

That would have been a great finale instead of the end taking the moons form
