  • Filmed throughout 2023. So, an eventful but exciting year draws now to a close as for the final time for now, we managed to film this years full highlights from various locations in the North, West/North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside of this years Transpennine Express Nova Fleet.
Nova 1: The Hitachi class 802's was built and Doncaster IET Depot of which between 2017 and 2019, they undergone mainline testing along the York to Scarborough line and high speed running between Doncaster and Newcastle. They entered service in early 2019 and their main route is the Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle. In December 2019, a timetable change extended their services through to Edinburgh. But, have reverted back to Newcastle to Liverpool with a few daily services running between Newcastle to Edinburgh Waverley. Since the recent timetable change of 2023, there is a daily Transpennine Express Nova 1 which runs between Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough which would then work on Scarborough to York shuttles, a daily service to Leeds before returning to York to head to Doncaster IEP depot. A total of 19 of these sets have been built.
Nova 2: Built by CAF and the only Electric Multiple Units in service, the class 397's were built from 2018 with a total of 12 of these units built. Very few made their introduction into service by December timetable change of 2019. These units were set to replace the former class 350/4 which were transferred across to London NorthWestern Railway and the class 185's. The main routes are Manchester Airport to Edinburgh/Glasgow with a few daily Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central services. These units have running speeds of 125 MPH.
Nova 3: MK5 coaches with a driver trailer coach was built from 2017 by CAF with a total of 13 of these sets being built to work with the class 68 locomotives, sub leased from Direct Rail Services. These push pull trains entered the mainline testing from 2018 before finally entering service by Summer of 2019. A brand new train depot was built to accommodate for the Nova 3 stock in 2018, Scarborough TMD where these units would be stored and maintained. They worked hourly between Scarborough and Liverpool Lime Street/York. Sadly though, the government decided to withdraw these trains which DRS needed their class 68's and the Nova 3 stock to head for storage. This now results in now just the class 185's working the revised Scarborough to York services. A big loss in terms of compacity and indeed a services linking to Manchester. RIP Nova 3.

Such a shame that Transpennine Express have decided not to use the Class 68 Mk5 Nova 3s anymore and are to be moved for storage. But they are keeping the Class 802 Nova 1, Class 397 Nova 2 and Class 185 Desiro.

It is a shame Andrew yes I agree. True, they still got the remaining fleet and are grand as always. But, let's hope all the best for the MK5 stock wherever they will go but it's the government decision to withdraw them as Transpennine Express are owned by them.
