I also just went around and asked my coworkers if they've ever heard of crowded house, and most of them went "was that some kind of old tv sitcom?" and one person knew them, sorta. So it seems to me like Vanilla Ice, the most one hit wonder guy ever, is more of a pop Icon in terms of fame than crowded house ever will be.

    The thing that blows my mind about this episode is like, if you’re saying Nala is low down on the sexy scale because you don’t want to admit to an attraction to cartoon animals, then surely all you’re doing is implying the existence of much sexier animals further up the scale? Blair was completely right. Gandalf is perhaps more wise, but he has vast knowledge of basically everything, especially because of his wide travel. Sam is a perfect example of wisdom over intelligence, he might not know about much outside of the Shire, but he is certainly wise, for instance towards the end when they are in Mordor he says to Frodo, “But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.” I mean just look up any list of his quotes and there may not be deep knowledge about Ents and their ways, but there is certainly wisdom. I would say that on the other side is Saruman, he is supremely intelligent, creating things that are just about never seen in any of the other kingdoms of Middle Earth, Isengard is almost in its own technological era, but as Treebeard says about him, "He has a mind of metal and wheels, and cares little for living things." Many misinterpret this as Tolkien just hating on modern technology, a trait of CS Lewis falsely ascribed to him by many, but really what it shows is Saruman's lack of wisdom, wisdom to tell what is right, wisdom not to use the Palantir, to not be so egotistical as to think he could wield the one ring. Also as a side note, while DnD was based on LOTR, it was created after and has moved away from it into a more general system not explicitly based of off one thing, so DnD stats aren't really relevant.

      100% agree with Blair's assessment of Gandalf vis a vis wise-intelligent but her referencing Sam's name as a factor in why she considereded him full wise...
      Sam is a modifier of wise, meaning half. His name means "half wise" or "half wit" because he was thought of as a very simple person. not saying he isn't wise in actuality but his name quite literally means the opposite 🥲

    And Nala's alright, but let's not forget the real sexy lion: Kovu.

    As much as I love these party games, I think it would be really fun to see games with more mechanical depth here at board game club- Saboteur and Secret Hitler are some of my favorites in this series, precisely because those games were themselves as interesting as the people playing them. Love you all, keep up the good work!

      Part of that is pandemic related though, it's not like they can get together and play many games properly, and it may not be easy to follow a game on BoardGameArena. I'd love for them to play Colt Express, Potion Explosion, Stone Age, and Downforce on there though

    I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but you can center the needle by clicking the big button in the middle of the dial, that way you don't have to "wind it back" every time. Learned that by playing with this emulator with my own friends! We played to see how many points we could get in however many cycles of who's giving the clue instead of teams since it's just as fun to use as a way to have fun conversations about stuff.

    • @ishoottheyscore8970
      @ishoottheyscore8970 3 года назад +1

      I'm not sure Sam is that wise, at least until he gets near the end of the book, he doesn't even have the farming wisdom of his father. Curious where his dad and Tom Bombadil would sit along the scale

    • @sexualchocolate5991
      @sexualchocolate5991 3 года назад +5

      Sam is quintessentially wise, in that he has a lot of emotional intelligence but is as dumb as a box of cat piss. Sheldon would be all the way in the right, for example, and then all the way on the left you have your Peter Sellers from Being There. Sam is just a notch or two below that. Gandalf is a mixture of both book learning’ and emotional intelligence, so he’s much closer to the centre.

    • @headphonic8

      Sam is not very wise. in fact, he would have been a good answer because he is only slightly wise, and not very intelligent.

    43:58 I just want to point out that while everyone is talking about Woodface, worth pointing out that their best selling album was actually their debut which is where they charted best in the US (sold over a million copies there alone), and where Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong came from. I don't know whether there was just confusion about what is actually on Woodface, and obviously a lot depends on what country you're listening from.
    Side note, for some reason Temple of Low Men never did that well in the UK, even though it arguably in Australia houses some of their most iconic tunes (Better Be Home Soon and Into Temptation, for eg.)

    As an Australian, re Crowded House, in Australia and NZ they would absolutely be a large degree to the right. UK and US you can argue the other way, iirc Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong are their only songs that actually did really well in both the US and UK. Those two hits were both off their debut album and were about as far as they ever truly got chart wise in the US..On the flip side, over 30-40 years they have had 12 songs in the UK top 40, and have a healthy touring calendar in Australia, NZ and the UK in particular (I think they have something like two weeks of dates including Isle of Wight festival this year booked just for UK and ireland dates).
    The dichotomy of this question is kinda off for that band though, because one hit wonder kinda implies they did one big song and then disappeared. If you take out the US market (where they still had two big singles), they easily had an album's worth of material that a large number of people contemporary to when the various eras were released would recognise, and are definitely pop icons in their countries of origin. They probably weren't a good clue for that reason.
