I think that you forget to mention why the king needs to get to the 6th row, which is to stop the black king from covering g6 otherwise Rf8 doesn't work.
I stumbled onto the winning first move of Kb7, but it was just luck. After starting with that move, I was able to reach the successful conclusion but did so without understanding the principle behind the move. Having so few starting options, I happened to guess correctly.
I had the general idea, but did not notice that the WK would find the g-file to be out of bounds. Very instructive, thank you.
