  • Getting out to the location of an intruder is a crucial part of Air Supremacy. But you don't want to do this haphazardly. That's a good way to get shot down. So how do you do it right?
Real world fighter pilots use a process known as a baseline intercept to reach a target in a position of advantage. That's what we'll cover in this video.

Once again, I've been doing the basic technique for ages without knowing the specifics or terminology. Especially in the Zone 5 campaign. My thought process was "close range, build turning room, conseal intentions if possible, turn for advantage"

Your attention to detail is second to none. I’ve leaned sooo much. Thank you. Cheers 🍻

Pretty straight forward once you understand the terminology and geometry. I am a basic virtual pilot trying to move into the intermediate stage. At basic entry level intercepts, I get on burner head on until I am at max range, fire to force him into defensive then use that time to work my way into his six. This only works if you have longer range weapons than your enemy. Because they shoot too, now I am cranking and chaffing/flaring and unable to maneuver into a superior position. Great video to visualize what is needed for a successful intercept

Awesome video as always. Very informative. I have red some of this stuff in CNATRA manual, have you used any specific manual? Also another question: toward the end of the vid (10:43) you say that putting the fighter in in CATA will increase AA, should it remain constant if you are in collision angle?

Unfortunately, I don't know RUclips well enough to answer that one. There may be a built in way to do it. But I do know there are programs out there that can rip video to a local file. Either way I don't mind if you want to make copies for personal use.

Thanks again Mike for the great video. Are there any resources to find out the canopy codes für F/A-18 and F-16 or is it just trial&error?

There are. But I don't know of any that have been publicly released.
From memory (so this may be wrong) the canopy rail on a F-16 is something like 40 or 45 degrees down. This is because the pilot sits really high in the cockpit. Pilots would then get the shallower canopy codes by sticking their hand on top of the rail. A fist would provide a shallow angle and a hand with the pinky and thumb stuck out would give an even shallower angle.
Unfortunately, my memory is failing here. But eventually I will get to making a series for the Viper and will work out the codes within DCS.
