Thanks for showing what happens to most of us at home. Things don't always (or usually) work out, and it's nice to see it happen online as well instead of perfect, oh-so-easy descriptions that lull most of us into doing what ends in utter frustration. 🙂
Love these little kits. Nice to see a pro still has to troubleshoot.
Here is where my journey began. Since then and a few dollars later, I have been learning (like SkyNet) at a geometric rate. Maybe you've done this already, but how's about going massively old school and make a 555 timer out of discrete components for us mortals to copy and experiment with!!
I install the resistors to read from left to right, so, I mount them the same way the "R" number is silk screened on the PC board. If the resistor mounts vertically, again, I match it to the "R" number; hope that makes sense. Stepping on one of those cut off wires and having it stick into your toe is real fun. 😁

The video’s title led me to expect a kit for a soldering station not a how-to/solder video.
Not criticizing the video, just it’s oddly-off title.
Perhaps rename it to “How to solder electronics kits.”

great stuff, I made the mistake of using pluming flux a while back and all my joints turned green and gnarly.
Plumbing Flux contains Acid and Must be avoided for Electronics...

After cutting resistor and diode leads close to the board I like to touch up the solder joints with a hot iron to prevent any future weak joints from temperature fluctuations.
I originally always bent the leads as well, but I've learned to use sticky stuff (like Blu Tack) to keep things in place. Components with bent leads are always tricky to remove if they need to be replaced. :)
Edit: The blue LED on the left side seems to misbehave though -- it lights when the other two are lit, but it looks better when they light when the other two are off (just like the red LED does).
Also, one must be very careful with sticky-tape. When removing, it can give a pretty harsh ESD.

I was soldering wires on switches today and bopping to my music and I looked over and I had reversed the pos and ground on 3 switches. They are 3 blade switch with a led that comes off of the center blade on the switch and the led lights when it is on and I had it backwards... Lol
Would make for a bad day... at 12v backwards...

I watched the video and see that you were not able to get it to fully work, I know how to build a kit but am interested in learning more about troubleshooting, so what do you do next to get this kit working? What are the next steps in troubleshooting a situation like this?
To answer some of the concerns with this kit build, we have worked with Paul for months and we love working with him. It does look like Paul had some issues with assembling this kit correctly. Each kit comes with a piece of paper that gives some instructions and we also make a website tutorial with a video of each kit as well. We encourage each of our makers to review the website tutorial and video before building our kits. Also, if anyone has issues with any of our kits, we try to make ourselves as available as we can to make things right as fast as possible.

We use the same fume extractor. They're great. They're on Amazon.
use a multimeter to check resistors its way easier instead of checking their color bands

Not sure if it matters electronically, but their website shows the center of the outboard 3 LEDs as being the opposite color.
We noticed the same thing, it's okay. People make mistakes. It's okay. We encourage people to read the instructions on the paper that is included along with the instructions on the website before building the kit. If anyone has any issues with the kit, they are always welcome to message us through our website so we can resolve it.
it's fun to see a "pro" / "tutorial" wher you hold the soldering iron on the circuit board for too long so you burn the circuit board
Maybe to low voltage to turn on when you have to wrong color on the leds on the sides red blue red instedd you have it red red red ?
yea just checked the website and the color sequence is wrong. different coloured leds have different current draw iirc

@@cybercitycircuits Just checked your schematic and you are on the right track. Your circuit has pairs and triplets of LEDs in parallel. This works fine if the LEDs in parallel are the same color (same forward voltage) . Unfortunately Paul switched the colors of the center LED on each end. Putting the blue LED on the center left (LED5) put a blue LED in parallel with LED4 and LED3 which are red. All the current in this parallel branch flows though the lower forward voltage red LEDs and the blue stays dark. In a similar way the 2 blue LEDs in the middle LED7 and LED8 are in parallel with LED6 in the right side center position. Putting a red LED here lets all the current in this branch flow through the now red LED6. You have the boards labeled well. Checking for correct component placement would have revealed the problem right away.
@Rami Ghazzawi The few times I have been on camera I could barely think straight. I am not going to fault a fellow for not getting it right live on camera. Yes the best course may have been to troubleshoot off camera then come back and explain the mistake.

20:28...Too much heat... a good way of lifting those small pads... IMO. If the heat of the iron does not heat the joint quickly then your tip is dry.

I think he’s talking about the length of the wires, not the components being polarised or not
just the tip needs to be tinned.
personally I learned nothing from this, but I still watched till the end, just in case. yea I been soldering since 79 certainly not everyday, but I have had the ability for 40+ years.
learn your color code kids: badly burnt resistors on your ground bus void general warranty say that every time you go thru a door for 3 days you will know it a lifetime. no card required.
lastly kids, if you care to have your led's work the first time, check em before you solder them, 1 resistor and and a battery is all that is required.
Use a coin cell, no resistor required. You can use the kind that comes in motherboards. You probably have one you can steal from an old rig in your basement :P
Thanks for the mnemonic and practice suggestion, although Im far from being a kid I'll use it. I've read another mnemonic for resistor codes this came from an old sweat from the trade but will probably not be taught anymore anymore.
Another mnemonic, perhaps not appropriate in today"s world, but once used in the ol' days: "Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly".

Does it matter that the color of the Led for LED5 and LED6 are switched?
LED5, the first one you swapped out that was not working is supposed to be red.

What happened bad components from the co.?
Definitely not what I would consider a good kit imo if you want to get into soldering my suggestion is to start off with through hole with a Christmas kit off amazon and then go from there. Once you get good with through hole try surface mount it’s not as difficult as it seems.

Man you do know a lot about electronics and yet was baffled about the led not turning .Can you imagine a newbie buying this piece of crap and facing the same problem?. Circuitcity fix this , give an answer or discontinue selling this crap
Hey there Tito. We are trying to address this. We sell over 100 of these kits and we built a few of them ourselves to test them before shipping them out. We publish the schematics and have detailed instructions for the kit on our website. I think that since he put a couple of the LEDs on the wrong spot, there may be additional issues with his build.
