Great review. Im a retired mechanic of 27yrs.(Porsche, Audi, Volvo, and VW). Purchased a 03 GS300 two years ago. My first Lexus. Has 190,000 on it and EVERYTHING WORKS! The engine does not drip or burn any oil! Toyota's reliability is unbelievable! These cars are far better engineered then anything made in Germany. Plan on keeping this to 300,000k and beyond. BTW, I think the stereo sounds great, but then my ears are 68yrs old : ).
Yep...the moment you buy a GS300...you wonder what took you so long to get one😆..Funny enough the Best one I bought.. Mileage.. Colour combo and condition wise was the Oldest. .a 98 plate...lol
I adore this full size sedan too, I have a 2003 Lexus GS300 with only 104,000km. The wood is genuine and it apparently comes from the same tree, that is why the grain is uniform throughout the entire trim. I learned recently that Lexus stands for Luxury Export US. Great video, loved it and makes me want to keep mine forever. Cheers!
do you even know why? part of the reason IS how easy it is to do maintenance...especially on the transmission.. there is a dipstick and a drain....plus everything else like a toyota corolla
I just bought a 99 Lexus GS300 with 194k miles. I was looking for an ES 330 and couldn't find one. I am a Senior Citizen but have always had Unusual cars. I need to find a good mechanic but the light is out on the radio. Hmm inside is like new outside paint is remarkable just had a couple scratches was garage kept and serviced by Toyota
@@yi4733 it's a common problem for the radio light to go out. that's the same problem with mine. It's really really easy to replace it. you can do it yourself too. Step 1: remove the ashtray ( u can do it by hand no need for screws) step 2: use a molding plastic remover tool its like a big flathead and take out the midde a/c vent from the bottom. once it's off you use a phillip screw driver to remove 4 screws. then you make sure to unplug all the wires ( it's straight forward) and then put plug in the wires into the stock radio that works. THAT''s it. there's videos on youtube. this should take u 30 minutes.
It has the cast iron inline 6 2JZ engine as the Supra, just nonturbo and is probably the smoothest engine I've ever experienced, probably smoother than the BMW IL6s.
I got a top of the line 2001 Lexus GS430 V8 rear wheel drive, over 300HP, with all the bells and whistles, touch screen, REAL wood all over, Mark Levinston stereo which included sorround speakers with a center speaker and a subwoofer. HID headlights with fog lights, sports suspension,.. I could go on and on. TRUST ME. It's 2019 and I still got my car and I'm not planning to change it anytime soon. Lol
Those gs 430 V8s are rare and hard to find for sale so you should definitely keep it but as for the 2019 Lexus gs they have really lost there touch the styling is not as unique anymore the older generations look better
@@cedricmiller2167 Agreed. I'm currently looking for a 2005-2011 GS with relatively low miles. I'm not a fan of the new oversized front grill and prefer the more subdued look of the older generations.
I have a 1998 Lexus GS400 with Yokohama advan sport tires all around and minor weight reduction. Only 134k miles and the thing flies. 1UZFE VVTI motor ftw. #UZS160
My 2004 gs300 has 205k miles on it. It runs like a new car honestly. Engine runs so smooth and quiet that I cannot tell if the engine is idling from inside the cabin sometimes. Transmission never misses a beat, I'd say its got the smoothest shifting automatic transmission I've ever driven, all electronics work like a charm nothing is broken or having intermittent problems despite its high mileage. I've had many different brand of cars/trucks over the years but honestly nothing gets close to Toyota in term of quality. Its so reliable. Literally bullet proof.
My grandparents have a ‘99 GS 300 with about 120k miles on it. They will never get rid of it. It’s a fantastic car. Best riding car I have ever been in. You don’t feel the road, you don’t hear the road. Legendary indeed. Those are nice rims too bro.

My first gen Gs 95 will hit 144 mph that's pretty close to 150. The second gen added VVT which dropped the 0-60 times in the 7 sec range from the previous Gs time of 9 secs. The Gs of this generation will cruise at 90-100mph with the 2j smooth as butter. No its not an M5 but it is one of the best all round cars you can buy for the money. ..especially used. In fact Motor Trend named it car of the year in 98
I have a 2001 Gs300 and I love it. It has 146,000miles and it rides like new. The airconditioning which has never been re-charged provides cooler air than my wifes brand new Sonata. It never has a problem other than cleaning the Mass air sensor which is easy to do.
Great interior, great styling, reliable to the grave. Modern suspension, real wood, and the gs430 when launched was the fastest 4dr Sedan in the world. Full electric interior, offered nav. The black interior is simply beautiful! And you can always pnp swap an aristo motor!

Most definetely real wood. It's lacquer-finished and very polished, that's why it looks "fake". For me, this is the classiest GS interior. Gens 1 and 3 are a little too bland, and gen 4 is a tad too techy.
great review. after my 07 toyota avalon limited was totaled, i bought a 04 sequoia limited and gave it to my wife, who was driving a 99 gs300. that gs is now my daily driver with 180k miles since it made more sense for her to drive the gas guzzler. i've been spoiled by the torque that the avalon had and going back to less torque has been a little annoying to say the least.....so i changed how i drive the car. i now allow myself to get above 3k rpm and keep it in the 'power' ECT mode so it'll upshift a little easier. even then it shifts to 2nd too soon. i've pretty much decided on a GS 400 or LS 430 as it's eventual replacement, likely the LS as it's closer to the avalon i'm used to, but for the foreseeable future this ultra smooth inline 6 will be my daily driver.
This car will outlast your other cars with minimum maintenance. Your current wheels are 17's and look great. And as others have said, the wood is real. Enjoy you GS300 = Grand Sport 300.
fastslash25 An 8 second 0-60 isn’t very slow. Might not be fast, but I’d hardly call it very slow. Highway passing acceleration is even better than the 0-60 time indicates. Keep in mind it shifts into 3rd gear before hitting 60 and those gear changes are relatively lackadaisical.
Hi, I own a 2006 Lexus GS300 SE-L. This is my 7th Lexus and is without doubt, the best yet. Very, very fast - tops out at 160+ mph! There isn't much that can keep up. Mine has the same grey leather interior as yours and I like it, a lot. That wood trim in your car is real wood; selected, prepared and polished by the Yamaha piano division. Mine rides on 18" wheels wearing 245/40 z 18 tyres. An outstanding set-up. I've bad a '99 with the straight six and even that was pretty quick. Lexus build their cars exclusively in Japan, the incredible excellence is there for a reason; Lexus design and build their cars to last for a minimum of 500,000 miles without a problem
Gonna check one out tomorrow, same year as this one, 3k with 160k miles, clean title, looks in great condition, inside and out. Silver on the outside and black leather interior. I keep hearing good reviews about Lexus vehicles, hopefully it doesn’t disappoint and I drive home with a gs300 tomorrow. Well I guess it all depends if the previous owner did the regular maintenance, but everyone keeps saying Toyota/Lexus cars are bulletproof
Just bought one. Pretty happy with it. Agree with everything, but A big Con is the integrated stereo. Even Crutchfield recommends leaving it alone. I found a replacement adapter with ne HVAC controls, but $250! I'm going to make it happen, but I hate the thought of it looking amateurish.
I have 2002 es300 same integrated stereo with wood grain....solved my problem with Bluetooth receiver from Wal-Mart $20 made by black web....perfect sound and phone capabilities
It’s not a Supra cop out. In japan these came optional twin turbo. Called the aristo in japan. Also even with coil overs and lowered the car doesn’t lose its comfyness that it’s known for. Depending on which coilovers you get
I love mine! ❤️ I was saving up for it....HAD 400 LEFT TO GET IT, (hubby gifted to me for holidays and they guys pranked me by saying it was sold begore i got there) sweet ride, teen named it 'Luna' and all aftermarket lights, tinted, a/c and the head unit swapped, added back up camera, etc+ .just put in bass blockers on the factory speakers, add new sub and small Amp, disconnect 6x CD and over ride for DVD ;) ( Mine was factory upgraded stereo with upgradable GPS ETC. 5" screen so now Bluetooth is my GPS) I have 19" matte black STR wheels on mine. She is my daily and our teen is begging for it to be theirs, NOPE... LOL THAT'S MY WHIP! 💯
I got one a few months back as my first car and I feel in love. I'm torn between modding it, or keeping it stock, and seeing how long I can keep her going.
Awesome job dude, dont kno if u have prev cam time but ill follow you before some of these other weird cats. But yea def agree, most comfy thing ive been in ever! Was a hs crush car but never thought it was too much outta reach until last month.. an 03 gs3 w/190k black on black leather interior, that word clean comes to mind. Still cant believe she sits in my driveway
Mines dropped to the ground on full Tein.. plan on adjusting 1/4 up, I’m fabricating rear sway( because the prices are horrendous nowadays) brake upgrade, tune, head port and polish and intake customization... no means wanting a “fast” gs, just a peppy one that makes people look twice at that big beautiful 20 year old car .. great vid btw. 💯💪 definitely love in Oklahoma we have no vehicle inspection either, plan on headers and straight 3.5” to 4” single... still debating
has a fair ammount of road noise. the wood is real. It probably would benifit from having smaller wheels with thicker tires. maybe add insulation to the door pannels
i used to drive a slammed supra ; when u get older you start thinking everything is to low. the gs300 is to low its designed as a sports 4 door long wheel base. after driving a s series or even an ls you will say man the gs is a bit lower.
Very good and positive review. Thank you, man. I've been drooling over Gen. 2 GS300/430 for the longest time and am planning to get it. A couple of comments and questions: Firstly, it DOESN'T weigh 36 tons(!), but 3,649 lbs... :-) Next, I still own 1993 Toyota Camry XLE V6 in very good condition and it runs superbly well. It has 180hp vs 220 on your GS300. You said that your GS is "heavy" and by no means "fast", but I feel that my Camry is quite "shifty" in that department. So, what is your criteria for high torque and speed? Have you had experience driving GS300's sibling: GS430? It's called by many "a monster", though GS300 does 0-60 in 6.0 sec and GS430 in 5.7sec. Am I missing something here, 'cause I'm a bit confused why such a disparity in opinions? Also, read somewhere that GS430's 8-cylinder motor is waaay too powerful for the car and it's "either a golf cart smoothness or a race car and nothing in-between".. That kind of put me off. I never drove either one and may purchase from out-of-state sight unseen, so I'm getting as much info from any source I can find. Therefore, my main question is which one out of two will be better for me and will GS430 offer a smooth, quiet ride, comparable to GS300 or will it be indeed a toss-up between a baby stroller and a Formula-1??? :) I'm not a speed junkie and am looking for comfortable ride, but with on-demand maneuverability and fast acceleration when needed. Your words about GS300's "weight and speed" somehow put me on guard... :) So what or rather which one out of the two can you recommend, given you drove the 430? Thanx. p.s. And I can't seem to find a link you mentioned in the video
I've had almost every flagship luxury car from top manufacturers (BMW 760LI V12 ; BMW 745LI; Mercedes S500 AMG; 4 Lexus's 93 GS 300; 00 GS 400 totaled; 06 IS 300; currently daily 00 GS 400). As you see, the list goes on & on. I can tell you from personal experience the second gen GS Lexus "will not disappoint you"! Lexus has been one of my most reliable cars I've owned. In terms of comfort, quiet ride, excellent handling, reliability, you won't find a better deal for the money. Find a good clean GS and you wont regret it. GS300 = Reliable & Comfort car. GS400 = Performance V8 Reliable and Comfort car. Hope this helps your decision.
I have a 2001 gs430. That engine suits the car much more. Great torque but by no means too fast. Perfect amount of power is 300 hp. Having driven both I would recommend a 400/430 over a 300.
7:27 Your point about why you would never lower it or put custom rims on it is right on. My wife's car came with low profile tires on big booty rims and the ride got progressively worse as those crappy chinese rims kept warping and bending. Went to a junk yard and got OEM 17 inch rims that are on the GS400 but now on our GS300. The ride went from crappy to awesome with those wheels and new tires. This car is so comfy. The front seat is more comfortable than the Lincoln Town car front seat without a doubt.
The best GS ever this car is luxury/Fast if you know how to make it powerful. The wood is real, I grew up around those cars had basically all lexus models in my family. Hands down the best.
Do yourself a favor and leave the wheels alone. If you put larger wheels on it the ride will deteriorate. If you go ahead and change them, you'll learn what un-sprung weight does to ride quality.
You have a rear wheel v6 reliable Japanese 4 door sedan for a cheap. That's why this car is great. I used it when I was poor college student. 2002 gs 300 😘
Hey bud liked the vid and subbed.. id say if you dont want to do too much.. try out the 6 speed trans with an adapter plate... just enjoy Nana's reliable awesome Lexus

FYI.. The 97 400 was rated number 7 in the world. And unless you have a 5.0, the 400 would be faster than that Mustang if its stock. In fact, place a K&N air filter in a 400, and I'm willing to bet it's at least as fast as a 5.0
@@DayneLeBlanc lol, next time try and find the rare GS430 (I'm picking one up this weekend). If you haven't already 300HP 325LB-FT. I see you're in TX, I could probably have it shown on your channel.

Actually, GS does not mean Grand Sedan - well in the US it does. GS should mean Grand Saloon, which is British equivalent to sedan. 4 door cars in Japan are typically called a saloon. 🤓
Hell yeah bro these are great cars I have a 99 Lexus GS300 diamond pearl white black leather and wood grain and man I love it so Smooth it’s worth the money

Your beard is from the same era as the car.
36 tons?? 72,000lbs? thats a heavy ass car.
It’s a tank
That’s real wood homie
I got one a few months back as my first car and I feel in love. I'm torn between modding it, or keeping it stock, and seeing how long I can keep her going.
AkimboDice1 I’m in the same boat, I’d like to do some stuff to it, but it’s so perfect the way it is lol
@@DayneLeBlanc i straight piped mine its so damn sweet
@@josiascy243 nice.
@Tommy Gunz, II Not forever. They are reliable though.
$38k when it came out...Around that.Base Model I don't know.I got one same color for $1500.Got it cheap....They Run for ever......!!!LOVE THIS CAR!!
How's it held up so far? Easy to work on, parts easily attainable?
Should you get this used?
Absolutely
Real wood in that car. I believe they get it from Yamaha for their musical instruments.
has a fair ammount of road noise. the wood is real. It probably would benifit from having smaller wheels with thicker tires. maybe add insulation to the door pannels
nothing beats those lexus seats.
Penny Stock Whispers big fax
Lexus gang love my boyfriends 2jz 99 Lexus GS300
ill never understand how people think, looking at a dude driving the car, filming himself talking is a review. wtf
This was very helpful
“That is a smooth 40” 😂😭😂😂😂
3,600 pounds... not 36 tons. 1 ton = 2,000 lbs.
i used to drive a slammed supra ; when u get older you start thinking everything is to low. the gs300 is to low its designed as a sports 4 door long wheel base. after driving a s series or even an ls you will say man the gs is a bit lower.
Very good and positive review. Thank you, man. I've been drooling over Gen. 2 GS300/430 for the longest time and am planning to get it. A couple of comments and questions:
Firstly, it DOESN'T weigh 36 tons(!), but 3,649 lbs... :-)
Next, I still own 1993 Toyota Camry XLE V6 in very good condition and it runs superbly well.
I'm not a speed junkie and am looking for comfortable ride, but with on-demand maneuverability and fast acceleration when needed.
Your words about GS300's "weight and speed" somehow put me on guard... :)
So what or rather which one out of the two can you recommend, given you drove the 430?
Thanx.
GS300 = Reliable & Comfort car.
Alex K. GS300 is actually about 8 seconds to 60; it’s not a snail but you can definitely tell a big difference between the 2JZ and the 1UZ/3UZ
It's real California walnut.
Weight of the 1998 Lexus GS 300: 1730 Kg / 3814 lbs.
I want a 2004 gs300 for a first car
Saw one for 8 grand. 70k miles on it. Sold in a days time. :(
The best GS ever this car is luxury/Fast if you know how to make it powerful. The wood is real, I grew up around those cars had basically all lexus models in my family. Hands down the best.
Do yourself a favor and leave the wheels alone. If you put larger wheels on it the ride will deteriorate. If you go ahead and change them, you'll learn what un-sprung weight does to ride quality.
had a 98 gs 400 black with same chrome rims and spolier. loved that bitch
You have a rear wheel v6 reliable Japanese 4 door sedan for a cheap. That's why this car is great. I used it when I was poor college student. 2002 gs 300 😘
All Lexus from all years have real wood. There has never been any Lexus with fake wood.
Lol Idk what had been done to yours but mine reached 140 mph stock after an installed turbo kit I’ve touched 183 mph
Hey bud liked the vid and subbed.. id say if you dont want to do too much.. try out the 6 speed trans with an adapter plate... just enjoy Nana's reliable awesome Lexus
Your grandma had good taste in cars👍
Ive had the 60mph wheel shakes for 9 years now it's so frustrating that's the only thing holding me back it's such a shame
So get it fixed?
@@Rekoyl116 did put a new steering rack in
Mine is blue Marley. I love it greatly
I kinda liked this different type of review. Next time take a senior citizen with you and get their opinion. Or test drive a Honda...hehe
Louis Jordaan lol sounds good to me!
I love mine, but she sucks to drive in the northeastern snow!
Great info thank you!
36 tons! Omg no maybe 3600 pounds
Zookeepers and shipwreck at the beginning made me give a thumbs up.
This shit has more horse then most older cars people are driving I think the pickup is quite nice coming from a 99 galant
FYI.. The 97 400 was rated number 7 in the world. And unless you have a 5.0, the 400 would be faster than that Mustang if its stock. In fact, place a K&N air filter in a 400, and I'm willing to bet it's at least as fast as a 5.0
Love My Gs!!
Had to stop mid-video and reiterate, as everyone else has said; that wood in any Lexus is real, my guy.
blaknoizee I regret ever making the comment lol
@@DayneLeBlanc lol, next time try and find the rare GS430 (I'm picking one up this weekend). If you haven't already 300HP 325LB-FT. I see you're in TX, I could probably have it shown on your channel.
Also that’s real wood playboy
i own 2000 model these gs and LS 98 to 2003 are best they are reliable and durable cars these days cars are just 5yrs then scrap do u see 20yr ford chev etc these days on road well NO lexus is lexus
Good video, thanks for sharing
Actually, GS does not mean Grand Sedan - well in the US it does.
GS should mean Grand Saloon, which is British equivalent to sedan. 4 door cars in Japan are typically called a saloon. 🤓
I want one to these as a daily cse my 350z (first car) has some knocking/ticking sound )
Would yall reccomend this car as a daily?
Hell yeah bro these are great cars I have a 99 Lexus GS300 diamond pearl white black leather and wood grain and man I love it so
Smooth it’s worth the money
Any maintenance tips to keep it reliable going past 200k miles?
It's got a 2j in it bro. Throw a turbo kit on it and that's a four door supra right there
Either put stock rims or put some good space filling rims but plz remove the current wheels
Gs 300 98 should I get it for 1600? It has 160k mileage. It's looking great
Nice car but some of the things that go wrong with the car seem like a ford or GM parts. Radio display goes blank, rear subwoofer goes bad, premature alternator issues, door locks don't work right and all at only 124K.
Shit I had One of those. That shit was smooth as hell loved it I can't lie.
Good video i have 01 lexus gs430 and by the way the wood is real even though it looks fake lol but its real.
36 TONS BTW
