I'm a complete beginner, just bought me a set of colour pencils. I copied your beetle tutorial and am thoroughly impressed with the result. Thanks so much!!! Great tutorial!!
Until the baby oil blending I thought 'Yeah. Right. Ha. Ha.' But all of a sudden - that thing started shining, and when you finally added the shadows I had to pick up by lower jaw from the floor. Wow! This is amazing!
Fadil I love your tutorials! They are easy to understand and follow and you have a relaxing voice. I also like that you clearly list everything needed.
YOU ARE AMAZING! I never would have imagined you could create this golden metallic beetle this way! I have been hoping to find a tutorial that would show the process, thank you so much! I'm subscribing tonight!
At the end of the video with the shadow shavings how many people blew on their screen, I did guilty 🤣very talented and beautiful work thank you I love it
Thank you for your great tutorial on drawing metallic items with colored pencils. I did the drawing and it turned out beautifully considering it is only the 4th drawing I've done with colored pencils in about 40 years. I've watched a number of artists use the Prismacolor pencils but so far you are still my go-to guy for fully understanding the best ways to use the pencils to get the best results. It took me a couple of episodes, to understand what you were saying, but I was able to quickly get used to your accent by watching the closed captioning while listening to you. Now I don't need the closed captioning and I am going through as many of your tutorials as I can each day. I feel like I am once again in art school and I'm having a great time learning all the new techniques and materials that have been developed in the last couple of decades. Thanks again for taking the time to make these tutorials.
The thumbnail looks perfect where as the bigger and more detailed the image the flatter it became. Though gold presents hard edges within these color patches you still have a gradient produced by light and shades of a 3D form. You can improve this image by introducing a little light and shadow.
It's a really good tip to pick colors before starting, with the help of photoshop. Could you please make a quick-tip-video were you show it on an example. Maybe the Skull. I have never used such a program for assistance and it would be really interessting for me as a beginner. Especially which colors you pick. Because I saw so many colors on the skull pic and you've choosen only a few. It's difficult for me and I would be very thankful to see this in another video. Thank you!
I just bought a box of Prismacolor Premier, waiting them to arrive. Your videos will be of great help for me to understand how to use them at best. I am really grateful for what you do, thank you!
That's amazing!!! I'm a beginner and I'm just starting back again after not doing anything for over a year. I need to work on basics, but the first drawing I plan to do has a root beer color, so this helped a bit with the colors used. I know my colors will vary some because I'm doing shiny gold. But this is a great tutorial! I just hope I can pull off the desired color I'm going for. Thank you for the video!
amelia garner, self righteous wanna be critics say things like this when they can't even draw a stick figure. Always best to leave positive comments than negative. I totally agree with you. This was a great tutorial and it is very helpful. Not flat at all. The person that said that probably has flat eyes.
This is one incredible drawing!! You should be proud! The beetle really does just come to life in front of your eyes and quickly looks 3D. I know I will most likely get every person and their mother biting my ear off for having an opinion. It is meant as constructive criticism and in NO way, shape or form am I trying to be mean, nasty, stuck up or any other insult people can come up with. Just 1 tiny little detail I felt let down the picture and that was the shadowing. Done in the right places however, it wasn’t blended in with pencil blend, or in your case, baby oil. Just looked a tiny bit strange having this incredibly realistic looking gold beetle and a grainy shadow. Keep up the absolute amazing work!! Love it! 💜
Absolutely 💯 loved it. I'm looking for a tutorial on chrome at the min for a car I'm attempting. Guidance would be appreciated. Wonderful video thank you. Definitely a thumbs up
Very informative. Thanks. Try setting up with the light source on your left so we can see properly next time. Your hand creates a shadow that obscures the finer details as it happens.
Thank you so much this helped me draw the gold sections in my first poster drawing. Its one of my most nostalgiac posters in my room and now i have a lot of them
THANK YOU for this! I tried drawing metallic things with no reference and it looked weird! The color picker idea is spot on! (I need red for example for a recent project) This video helped me so much!
Wow! You are a wizard with pencils !!! Amazing! And you are a great tutor! And a great artist!! Thank you for sharing your tips and drawings. You are awesome! : )
This is very good, but how do I know where to apply the dark/light areas on something other than this beetle 🪲 and something that I don't have a reference picture for? Like an object or the inside of a clock tower in a colouring book?
Can you do a full video drawing a leopard??? Please, I really like all your videos:) haven't found any full tutorial on how to draw a leopard on RUclips or anywhere!
I really love all of your videos, they're so educational! I'm an intermediate colored pencil artist and I must say that I love watching you for helpful tips and tricks. (Also your voice is very relaxing xD)
I was following along when you were using the colors in order, but then you began switching back and forth and I couldn't always tell which ones were which. If you could add captions that would help, or if you did all of one color before going to another. It does look great, but I couldn't keep up.
Like i said in the video, for the light part, i used sand and for the next darker part (the one on left) i used golden rod and raw umber and for the darkest part i used light umber ,indigo blue and black. You dont have to mind the other minor color changes. I did that to adjust colors according to the reference photo. I thought they were not worth mentioning. Those color adjustments were done for my mistakes. You may make mistakes but that would be different from me. so you will have to adjust accordingly. So there is no point in telling the order of colors i used for adjusting my drawing. I hope you got the point :)
I have a request... I know it’s old, but the Dragan effect from “300” would look amazing with this method. Would you be willing to do something from that movie? I did a photoshop version of the Dragan style on a photo. It took thirteen different steps. I would love to see your interpretation of it in this medium.
When you've applied the baby oil can you then continue to colour straight away, good tutorial and what name are we to find you on Facebook would love to see more of your work and tutorials, your voice is very soothing 🇬🇧🌈🇬🇧
Love this! Im curious on how you knew where to place the colors say I want to draw something but using this metallic color pencil method how would I know where to place the colors?
Thank you :) Like all other drawings this one is also based on direction of light. But since this is a little more reflective, surrounding structures will influence the color. so drawing metals and glass is dependent on surrounding objects too. So its always best to use a reference photo. But of course you can draw it from mind too.
You can use models or pic references. It always seems so impossible but that's because we're scared to even start trying. "What if I mess up??" Experience. Experience.
And how do you squeeze that oil from the baby?..... Nice work! Do the instructions for those pencils tell us to use the oils or water for blending, or is it a method developed by the artists? THANKS
Al Catraz To the best of my knowledge, most colored pencil sets (the ones I own anyway) don't come with instructions. I think the reason for this is likely because the best and easiest way to learn how each pencil works is through practical application and firsthand experience. Even pencils within the same set are not created equally. Some have more or less binders (wax or oil) and some have more or less pigment (color) than others. Therefore, some lay down smoothly and some more scratchy. My best piece of advice is just to try them and try different methods and techniques, vary pressure and grip. Try holding the pencil at different angles and closer or further away from the tip. Get to know each pencil literally.
Al Catraz Also, there are many different blending tools, methods and mediums. Which you choose to use depend largely on personal preference. Ease of use, safety and affordability are also factors for most people. I've even seen people use rum or tequila or vodka to blend. Some use Vaseline, some use odorless mineral spirits, turpenoid, gamsol, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl or ethyl). I've seen people use Olive oil, coconut oil, vegetable or just about any kind of oil they happen to have on hand, except motor oil lol. There are colorless blending pencils (usually made of wax without pigment), colorless blender markers (alcohol-based). I haven't really seen water uses for blending, probably mainly because it can damage the paper, but any wet media can do that, especially if you use an excessive amount, which is why I always recommend wiping off excess using a paper towel or even swiping your paintbrush, q-tip or tortillion across some blank scrap paper. And there again, there are many different tools you can use to apply different blending methods.
Hi.. I do follow your colouring.. Can you suggest me which paper to use with prisma colour pencils.. I love to blend colours without any other material.. Thank you
This is amazing!!! seriously, it had helped me a lot , instructions are clear and comprehensible and speed is so good so thank you:)! I have a question, can i use thinner instead of baby oil or does the baby oil have a better effect?
I can't possibly imagine why 100 people could give this excellent instructional video a thumbs down. This is genuinely excellent from start to finish.
maybe they liked it upside down
Totally agree !
I think they're jealous. Notice the Debbie Downers never comment their reason why! Jealous.
They most likely couldn't do it right
Coz they can't draw

+Shoshi Platypus Thank you so much 😀
Wow, that looks like gold. It came out beautifully. If I didn’t see it with my own eyes I wouldn’t believe it.
Excellent!
Thank you again for another one of your wonderful tutorials :) I have always wanted to see someone create gold with coloured pencils on a video.
its my pleasure :)

Loving this, it's so nice to have someone explain their process. I have spent many hours wondering how some processes are done in a range of media.
you deserve WAY more subscribers! I like how you're mentioning the colours and materials you used.
thank you so much :)

Love your excellent tip about using photoshop to identify colors to aid in selecting your color pencil palette. ❤️🙏
It's insane how great this looks. You are amazing.
Absolutely superb sir.

Thank you so much this helped me draw the gold sections in my first poster drawing. Its one of my most nostalgiac posters in my room and now i have a lot of them
Thank you. I am so glad i could help
I never thought of using baby oil! I have used odorless mineral spirits but it needs many layers first or the "grain" will still show.
THANK YOU for this! I tried drawing metallic things with no reference and it looked weird! The color picker idea is spot on! (I need red for example for a recent project) This video helped me so much!
Very cool using the pencil shavings!! I was wondering if there was a use for the shaving because I hate wasting any of my colored pencils!!
That's really cool how it comes together like that.
Thank you so much-this was a really helpful video,I will certainly watch more.

Golden Beatle that sounds like a football team name.
Random dude: And who won the game last night
Me: The Golden Beatles, but it was a close game.
After watching your video (phenomenal work by the way) I question why metallic colors exist in the first place. Do you know the answer?
