    If you want to move material with all of its maps, you can use CTRL+ALT+left mouse click (drag) on material.

    Been using the compact material editor since the earliest 3dsmax version. Tried to move to slate editor several times, but always return to compact. But now I think i have to push myself to slate editor, as materials get more complex these days. I feel the compact editor just struggling to keep up with the multitude branchings of submaterial, maps, etc of today's materials. Thank you for your explanation

    for complex and multi submix materials is useful. It's useful also to check if textures are instanced properly, this is basic when using gpu (not only) renderers where textures must be optimized across all the scene materials. Also changing a multitude of parameters with just one value is possible only within the slate.

    I used the compact editor in the beginning as that was all that was available, up until 2015 I think. Once I forced myself to get used to Slate, there is just no going back. It's so much easier to control instanced nodes, adding controllers (so things like UVW scale or material parameters can be shared and controlled across several nodes), and you're no longer limited to 32 materials to edit at once. The only problem with Slate though is if you have a lot of tabs and/or a lot of materials in the view(s), that adds to not only your filesize but also to how long it takes to open a file.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts ;) I had the same thought when I switched to Slate Material Editor - 'no way I will go back to the Compact version'. Anyway, in terms of the problem you've mentioned - this is why we need to keep a material editor clean (f.ex. use the same textures to multiple materials if possible instead of copy them) and we can delete unnecessary view tabs, and use some tricks to optimize the material editor preview. But good point, thanks for addressing it here ;)

      @@ArchVizArtist I use the Instance Duplicate Maps option often, problem is things like CoronaBitmap don't honor this tool so even if you have 3 identical copies of a grunge coronabitmap, 3ds' system for instancing after-the-fact won't apply to those nodes. Not sure if that's an Autodesk or a Corona issue though.
      But I did learn that lesson and I try to pass that tip on - keep tabs low and number of active materials in the editor to a minimum when you save your file at the end of the day.

    You have the best channel in RUclips. I'm not fan of node editor, it's good when you have scene with single item and only couple materials. When scene is more complex then node editor navigation is really messy.
    I still don't know what would be best option to organize material library of all the materials, maps? I would like to see some kind of tree structure list or table with good search and filter tools to quickly find materials from long list.

    K. So I've been using Max since 1998. Starting with 3D Studio Max R2. I have always used the compact material editor (at least that's what its called now) and would like to explore moving to the slate editor. To be honest, I find the slate editor very confusing and visually jumbled. Needless to say, I'm still using the compact editor. I would be interested in a tutorial that concentrates specifically on old schoolers such as myself converting our work flows over to the slate editor. Is there such a tutorial?

    Seeing the comments i dont even understand how in 2021 people can still use compact editor. The slate is so much more powerfull. This video barely scratches the power of it. Instancing maps, and to go furtheryou can even instance uv mapping. You can add color correction by the fly between two nodes, or delete them by Alt+drag and shake mouse. You can have multiple board view, drag and drop bitmap from windows on it. Etc etc etc....
    Guys take one hour to switch to it, you wont regret it.

    It's driving me nuts right now. I want to create an Arnold Material and observe the changes in Active Shade. Whenever I use active sahde, the material preview will turn black and I cant see what I'm doing. If I turn Acttive shade off, the material Preview in slate works fine, but the object in the Viewport has no texture - because the arnol Material has no Support for this. I'm this close to punch a hole in my monitor.

  • @philipprapp9356
    @philipprapp9356 2 года назад +1

    Coming from Blender. Compound sucks and slate has one crucial design flaw which literally makes me scream in frustration. Why do I constantly have to see all materials of all the objects in the scene??? It's ridiculous, confusing and in most cases unnecessary. I want to see the material of the selected object not everything all the time. Luckily there is a script to make that happen. Still incredibly stupid design decision which tells how far 3ds max is already behind it's competition in certain areas.
