I first heard Aimee's work in the film, Magnolia, and based on the strength of those songs, my wife Ann and I picked up the albums that were available then (late 90s). I just discovered this song yesterday -- some 15-and-a-half years after Ann's suicide. I was totally choked up by lyrics and music. And the concept that "suicide is murder" was one that I came to following Ann's death. I think, for the survivors of those who commit suicide, there is a complex and contradictory set of feelings, because we feel both terrible sadness for the victim, and terrible anger for the murderer -- and they are the same person. Thank you, Aimee Mann for this haunting, poignant song.
God bless Aimee Mann for staying true to her own vision and going to those dark places that only an artist like her can distill into a tragically beautiful vignette like this.

@@Cicilo1983 Yes, I most definitely have listened to Mental Illnes several times! Amazing album. I'm very much looking forward to this next project, too!
I was first introduced to Aimee's music in 2004 in a seemingly random way. Walking through my locally owned record store one night, I was drawn to the artwork on the CD cover of "Lost In Space" --and made an impulse buy. I don't usually do impulse buys and had never heard of Aimee. I loved every song and every drawing in the little booklet. The kick to this story: when I made this purchase I was fresh out of 30-day inpatient treatment for substance abuse. Little did I know how close a connection to much of Aimee's writing I would have over the years.
A compassionate yet forceful plea to nip distorted thinking in the bud. That's what I picked up on first listen. Thank you, Aimee, it's not a lead single for the faint-hearted.

The 1st line is so true! ...regardless of any oppion about blame, reason or what suicide means--it is very common that the strongest memory of that person is either how people imagine they looked or what they actually saw. I think thats why we can have a strong need to know how they "did it" because we feel the need to have a mental image of that persons last moments(just like any other form of sudden death)

There's a reason she's famous for her lyrics. I notice more each time I watch and listen to this. There's a shot of him staring down from the upstairs window to the brick walkway below, which I was reminded of later with the line "...falling where no one can catch". FYI you can buy this song now on Amazon for $.99 (whole album isn't available yet). And I just have to say Aimee looks gorgeous. She has timeless beauty. She'll be beautiful when she's in her 90s. It is in her eyes and in her smile and that will never age.
She is not the least bit underrated, lol. It seems to never fail in RUclips comments. A brilliant artist people have known about and appreciated for decades. There in the snow turning blue
Get used to that being you
Picture yourself
Blood from a cut on your wrist
Checking for veins that you missed
'Cause suicide is murder
You've got to have motive, means, and opportunity
Suicide is murder
Premeditated, rehearsed tragedy
Motive is key
Count off the friends who would care
If there are none, then you're there
Motive's a must
Shame and self-loathing a plus
Tickets for under the bus
Suicide is murder
You've got to have motive, means, and opportunity
Suicide is murder
Premeditated, rehearsed tragedy
But beware 'cause anyone who knew you
Will be cursed and part of them will also die
There's no end to the asking of the question “why?”
So, picture yourself
What sums up all of your ills?
Is it drowning?
Or bullets, or pills?
Try to detach
If throwing the pills down the hatch
Or falling where no one can catch
If suicide is murder
You've got to have the stomach for a heartless killing spree
Suicide is murder
Premeditated, rehearsed tragedy
