Let’s not get carried away now. Ben is great, but he’s not on Paul’s level. Paul has more great compositions, and plays not just piano, but bass, guitar, and drums well. The only area where ben is better is piano. But Paul is a heckuva good pianist, too. John wasn’t the instrumentalist Paul (or Ben) are, but his catalog of songs is epic. Imagine, Strawberry Fields, and Lucy in the sky with diamonds are better than anything Ben has written and I like ben’s songs. Oh-and both Paul and John were better vocalists. Certainly Paul’s voice was more versatile. Paul could do Ben’s vibe-sweet/innocent with a nice falsetto (e.g. let it be / hey Jude)-and he could do Helter Skelter and Oh Darlin’
If I hear Ben Folds in any capacity, I can't help but smile. This man has the amazing to capsize the listener into despair while giving uplifting by the same token. I remember in a small venue in Jacksonville, Oregon in 2015, I seemed to be the only one who snapped up for the audience feedback punctuations, got the recog from him and the rest but I remained in the song(s) the entire time. Very few artists evoke this psych-sonic connection, and I'd be hard-pressed these daze to find one better.
Watching (for the 1000th time) in 2024. A singularly remarkable performance. Ben demonstrates sheer mastery of his craft here, and the audience is totally hypnotized. One of my favorite little moments is at about 00:28, at the conclusion of the intro; you can hear Ben humming to get the pitch of the first note. :)
So glad you've found him. I'm reliving them all over again after my daughter showed me she'd begun listening to him again, recently. What I gift to rediscover him!
Randomly, someone reminded me of this song yesterday without even knowing they'd done so. Just used the word "Landed" out of context, and immediately I thought of Ben Folds. Searched RUclips and found him, and then searched again for a live version. Here I am, and here I've been for about 3 hours now listening over and over again.
I'm a musician of moderate ability. I can sing while playing the guitar, and can sing while playing piano on a couple songs. The differences between the piano composition and the structure of the vocal melody make for what sounds like a damn near impossible feat. I dont play piano much so i could be overhyping a little, but there is no doubt that Ben Folds is a legend as far as contemporary pop (popular) musicians go.
Having played piano for four years, I'd say I have a decent amount of skill and technique on keyboard instruments. And yes, his ability is unrivaled in the contemporary pop scene. Even after playing for 4 years, I still can't get the intro down.
@@salfaimusic I am a high school student, played piano most of my life. I learned the official version of the song and it took 4 months to get down all the way
I was lucky enough to see ben with the Pittsburgh symphony and then I went and saw him with a regular band in pittsburgh and they were just amazing experiences. The symphony show was just bone chilling amazing the entire time it was a bucket list experience if you ever get the chance to buy a seat for a show like that do it. It was unforgettable.
Beautiful song. You can tell it’s towards the end of a set and he wasn’t feeling it. I’ve seen this song performed several times and it’s completely different when his emotion is in the music. With all that said it’s amazing every time I hear it
Went to Ben here in the UK in concert...Just him and a piano. Only went to hear this song live, but he put on a great show, really got the audience engaged. Very impressive.
The mic' was probably chosen because it has a more old school studio-esque vibe to give it that "live at RCA Studio" aesthetic. To be honest though, the U47 is a great mic' that's fantastic for vocals and they have positioned it quite well. An SM7B would also be a great mic' (Ben uses it when he's touring with an upright) but it could have just been a question of what sounded best in the room i.e. a toss up between improved rejection or an arguably better vocal sound
Maybe its not the mix that is clipping- whoever mixed added some distortion after compression or something... I guess that dirty RCA studio sound is what they were going for. Regardless, spectacular performance by Folds.
holy fck his piano skills arent human
Ben Folds is one of the greats. Up there with Lennon and McCartney.
Better.
He’s a better musician, but not a better writer. Ben is great, no doubt, but Lennon and McCartney wrote a list of classics.
Beautiful
Way better.

Ben you are the Elton John of my generation. Thank you for getting me through some of the most trying times in my life. Keep rocking the suburbs!
Why tf this is soo underrated 😭
I'm watching this in a quiet library and almost impulsively clapped at the end.
This song just hits me with those full body chills every time. I love that great music can illicit such involuntary responses.
He is absolutely one of the great piano pop artists of all time. I saw him in London in 2015 and he was absolutely incredible

One of the best songs of all time just insanely beautiful. So underrated
Exactly who has underrated this?

Only just found out about Ben Folds this month via a Jamie Cullum version of Brick. Can’t get enough of this guy’s music. Incredible.
Hopefully you've stopped listening to Jamie Cullum since?

Lol same, but 10 years between listening. Rediscovering him, what a blast
He is such an amazing musician
The best live version of this song available to date for sure
Ben Folds is my favorite I'm so glad he still has long to live on
Tears. Just Tears. Beautiful.
OMG
How can just one man make such an amazing sound ?

Hes a musical genius!

He seemed pretty darn into it in the solo!
I love this song too
Down comes the reign of the telephone czar. Goddamn.
I liked it with the LDC. Gave it a super intimate sound...
Probably one of his best!!!
piano still sounds awesome
what a well thought out love song.
I play the piano also and I have never seen this peace of art ,and it is amazing
This is my go to song when I need a cheer....
Me too, my son Ben Meis sings it on University Acapella. Thanks to Ben Folds for pulling that album together. On of the best albums I've ever heard.
My fav song ever
I Love, Love this song!
Insane talent, a work of art ❤️
Always remember him getting the sound guy at a gig to hunt down a rattle in one of the bass units in his pa rig. Once he was done it was perfect.

Omggggg BEN
Incredible 👏👌
What a performance, jesus
He’s an amazing and very talented guy love that song
Here for the awe on the faces of the front row
What. A. Song.
You have been heard, Ben.
uma das musicas mais bonita
That's a swipe right for me.
Mortal Groove all hail the boognish
Fucking AWESOME. ❤
The Mix is noisy clipping and annoying, love this song, one of fav's
Thank god someone else noticed this. Ben is amazing, but who the fuck is red lining him?
最後に軽く会釈するところも格好いい
Great song. Pours himself into it. Bye bye
I swear it sounds like there are strings there sometimes (in addition to the piano strings)
Right before he starts singing he makes a little “mmmmm” sound like Winnie The Pooh or something
Sammy’s Corner I was gonna say he was getting his pitch from the chord- but then I relistened and you’re right it’s exactly like Winnie the pooh
Whose decision was it to throw a large diaphragm condenser on a performance like this? Would have been much better suited for an SM7B or something
I agree, and the whole mix is clipping

TALENTLESS CUNTS PICKING HOLES
Ben actually chooses this mic for a lot of his recordings, it was just badly mixed by the radio station
Love the F bomb that didn't get dropped at 1:30
Who jams harder on the piano? Absolutely nobody.
shame about the mic
What key is this in?
B♭
Poe Leggette B flat
All of them 😶
2:51 though
Is that Lin Manuel Miranda in the audience in the purple polo shirt?
Definitely not lol
My favorite Ben folds song way better than Elton John x
Forgot what A song
Reckless.
Great pianist...pe..ahh nevermind he's really good.
WHY DON'T WE SEE HIS HANDS??? I can't watch. Cameramen, you had ONE JOB: A PIANO player.
Great song but, worst Mixing. oh my speaker.
Very overrated artist and song. Him and Elvis Costello are the two most overrated singers in the industry. I don’t understand why they are famous.
