    Best game ever. Been playing it monthly for about 3 years now. One of the best things about the game is that each class is freaking awesome. And they each fill a niche. You don’t have the homogenous, generic 5E parties with 4 characters who can all do the same things (lock-picking paladins, anyone?). If you want to pick a lock as a wizard, cool. Roll for it and spend some luck. Unless you were a locksmith at level-0, then roll a d30, dude.

    I don't normally play wizards but DCC spell system got me to play one and actually enjoy it. The first funnel was a mixed bag, most of the party died except for one dwarf who rode a donkey into the sunset wielding a magic sword of power. But then we started playing Lankhmar where the things really kicked off. And the part of casting spells when someone random has to always die is my favourite bit :D

    For potential judges: If players ask “how do the rules work??” Past the basic mechanics DONT TELL THEM. Wait for them to find a scroll and try to read it, wait for them to find someone and craft a magic item. Wait for their patron to be pleased or displeased. The surprising stuff is the fun for most players. If you have power-gaming warlord players who hate failing/hate unexpected events…make sure the mishaps are still fun and they get something out of that

    This seem like a very interesting game, but it feels a little more 80s cool/edgy/metal and i dunno if thats my vibe but gameplaywise it seems very interesting. The roleplay having a positive effect on the game is very cool and i really like teh "quest for it" idea

      You don't necessarily have to go full gonzo weirdness with it. D&D and OSR adventures can be adapted to it with a little conversion. It's pretty flexible regarding the tone you want to go with. Some people don't bother with things like the personalized spell side effects, for example. Bits like the Mighty Deeds and Luck attribute can also be ported directly into other d20-based games, easily so with OSR ones like Old School Essentials. It's flexible. It's Lankhmar expansion is a good example of changing the gameplay to a more sword & sorcery style without requiring too many adjustments.

      If you like d20 systems and fantasy we think it's worth giving a shot at some point. It really does work in almost any setting you can think of. There is a 3rd party campaign setting called Umerica that is like a Saturday Morning cartoon. Daniel J Bishop has a series of adventures based on fairy tales, but with a dark fey twist. It's pretty wild how adaptable the system is. Hope you give it a shot someday! Take care.

    So spells are by design a lot more worth the risk than just throwing off a Tenser's Floating Disc or whatever? I guess the conceit is to make you wary of magic but it might swing too far in that direction for some players. I've heard from people who've played, though, that people use magic specifically because results can be so messed up

    • @minimoose7890
      @minimoose7890 9 месяцев назад +1

      It certainly makes magic a lot more unpredictable and interesting. You can never be sure what might happen. (Like much of the rest of the game, it definitely gives a different vibe and style from a game like D&D5e; so if players are not up for that style, then it won't fit for them. The game seems different enough though I think it could encourage some people to try it just to try out something different and weird.) I don't know if there is an intent to make caster-players less overpowered compared to martial-players, but I imagine it would have that effect.

      @@nutherefurlong- The 0-level funnel gets a lot of attention, but you don't really need to start that way. • @BasicLiches
      @BasicLiches  9 месяцев назад

      It works great for campaign play as well as multiple campaigns. The 1st and 3rd party support is incredible. So you've got lots of campaign settings along with new class options, spells etc... If you don't dig the vanilla fantasy setting you can play in the literary worlds of Leiber's Lankhmar or Vance's The Dying Earth. Or you can get into sword and planet adventures with the Purple Planet. If you dig creepy Appalachian-style horror you've The Chained Coffin/Shudder Mountains to explore. You could stick with DCC as your primary system and be satisfied for years! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    • @Captainpigraven

      I’ve played with DCC off and on since 2016, maybe? I agree that the support is pretty decent and can be varied. It’s really fun to play but it’s never threatened to take over as my main system along the way. That could be just me and my tables, or it could be felt by others, too. It’s a breath of fresh air at the right time whenever your preferred system starts to feel stuffy.
      My edition progression (my preferred, dominant edition at any one point) is 3.0/3.5, PF1e, PF2e. I played 5e intermittently from its release through 2017, and overall found it extremely lacking. It was fun for five minutes, but outside of brand recognition and classic D&D creatures, it did little for us.
      I tried DCC about a year or two after trying 5e and had a blast. I feel like my table felt the same initial excitement over DCC as many fans initially felt in their jump to 5e. While the passion burned hot, it also didn’t last. I still love DCC, but it just doesn’t have the same level of sustainability for my tables as does PF2e, and 3.5/PF1e before it. But definitely don’t let that stop you from giving it a try! It’s a fun system.
      I hope that helps. I apologize for the tome, but I wanted to provide some background information so you could know my tastes and weigh that into my opinion.

  • @Newnodrogbob

    Great video, as always. It was an engaging and fun presentation, and you clearly have great enthusiasm for the game. I don’t think it’s for me.
    There is a level of randomization that makes things feel disposable to me. You rolled 3d6 once for each ability and don’t qualify for any of the cool character classes? It’s ok, you’re a fighter. Name him Roger and try to survive this random map of monster closets. We’ll do a few sessions of that and then you can retire him and roll up Roger II. If he dies, you can roll again even sooner.
    The zero level funnel gives me the same vibe.This is totally random. Don’t put too much thought into it. Don’t get attached. It’s all just a game; these characters aren’t important and they won’t be around for long anyway.
    So grab your 10’ pole to check for traps or gelatinous cubes, and your mirror to peer around corners. We’re going to the monster gauntlet, where a parade of unrelated foes have been sprinkled haphazardly into square chambers connected by hallways. They are standing motionless and silent, awaiting your arrival so they can fight to the death guarding…the room they were standing in.

      Totally understand where you are coming from! It can certainly come across that way. Our only advice is to give it a try. It plays and feels different at the table!

    • @jdsmith112363
      @jdsmith112363 9 месяцев назад +1

      None of that really describes how Dungeon Crawl Classics adventures are written, or how the developers encourage people to write adventures. The rule of thumb is pretty much "no boring stuff". Monsters sitting in a rooms in a random map waiting to fight to the death are boring. No published DCC adventure does anything like that. Instead, pretty much every encounter should be unique in some way, and keep the players guessing and surprised.
      None of the classes are gated behind ability score prerequisites (like they were in AD&D), and anyway, ability scores don't really matter a whole lot (bonuses and penalties are relatively rare because of the bell curve and cap out at +/-3, which is fairly quickly overwhelmed by class bonuses). And the funnel is just a playable part of character creation (playing out your backstory). It only lasts a session, maybe two at the most, and then you are off to bigger things with your level 1 PC.
      I'd encourage you to give the game a shot if you can find an online or local game to play in. You might be surprised how different it is from your expectations.

      I've been playing DCC for over a decade now. I've played and run sooo many funnels. Interestingly, the results tend to be almost the exact opposite of what one might believe. The emergent nature of the Funnel makes it - IMHO - one of the greatest advances in TTRPG since the turn of the millennium. You might be amazed at how much people connect with the surviving characters, how much they cling to the herding dog or the chicken, how much the shared experience of surviving binds the characters to each other. It's an amazing thig to watch.
      And as others have pointed out - DCC funnels are anything but the kind of adventure described. It's beast men and frenetic Chaos Lords; Titans and pumpkin-creatures. It's folklore and heavy metal and myths. There's very rarely anything "typical" in a DCC funnel, or adventure, for that matter...
      As @BasicLiches implies - it has to be played to really see how it all comes together. It's amazing.
