Thanks so much for watching the video! Lots of you have been asking us to cover Dungeon Crawl Classics and we're happy to oblige! If you have any questions about rules or things to purchase for DCC, let us know in the comments. Also, let us know your favorite thing about playing Dungeon Crawl Classics. Do you love Might Deeds? How about the insane Magic System? All of the random tables? We love it all and hope this video gets DCC some new players and judges!
My favorite things about DCC are that all character classes bring specific value to a group. It's very likely that magic will present differently for most casters and never feel safe or reliable. That's important to keep the wonder present in dealing with cosmic power or the divine. Another amazing thing is that all the randomness comes together to make great stories unfold without ever getting to a point where PLAYER skill or creativity no longer means anything. My crew really think s on their feat and it never devolves to skill check after skill check. As for content to cover, I'd love it if you could do something on module based play and dungeon crawls (maybe a funnel and a level 1-2 adventure. Kind of like a movie trailer level of detail on the plot. The modules are a great part of the game and getting back into dungeon crawls as a chance to have great, weird, wonderful and unique elements to a tightly focusses and cinematic story. It's way different from the slog of a 1-10 level mega campaign book for 5e. The really cool thing is that, as a judge you are presented with a wealth of great content to run but, with enough latitude that you can string the modules together to form a meta narrative for the campaign. I love having call backs to prior modules come up and feel organic to the adventure. It's also worth covering the DCC annual and some of the zine content in a little more detail. Gongfarmer's has alternate classes that bring in some of the AD&D style class options missing from DCC. Hubris would also be great to cover since it's a stand alone setting as well as a tool kit and includes options for more classes which could be analogs for Aracocra and Teiflings. DCC + 3rd party content is a recipe for awesome homebrews and hacks. The great thing is it was built to support this and that is just wonderful in game culture flooded with dictates from on high in a never ending stream of increasingly half assed 50.00 books for 5e.
I'm 58 and just returning to RPGs, having had the time of my life playing AD&D as a teenager. I just got my DCC rulebook and I think this might be the game for me. Love the video and you had me at Basic Liches. Best name ever!
Whoa! I've watched lots of DCC review videos but man, this one covers everything! Thanks for covering all the other books too -- I was overwhelmed when I first visited their site. And free demo nights?!? I had no idea this was a thing -- very cool! Seriously, next time someone asks about DCC I'm sending them to this video -- very well done.
DCC is such a blast. It's wild, because it's so not what I'm normally into, but it somehow works. I've had an absolute blast running it and hope to do so again soon.
Really fantastic video. I feel like it gave me a good sense for the game and while I think the vibe of the game isn't for me, I can certainly see the appeal and why folks love it so much.
Thanks for the comment! It's certainly not for everyone, but if you ever get a chance to try it I would say go for it. The online Demo Night from Goodman Games is totally free and the best way to see if it's right for you.
Brendan is great. The demo night is like two hours at most, but it's two hours filled with details on how the game works, and some of the most fun I've had in a dungeon crawl
The Demo night is such a great idea and I'm glad people are taking advantage of it. I just checked their website and it looks like they've expanded it even more! Demand must be ramping up!
You sir have made me buy this game and try it out with my friends. Sure sounds like my cup of tea even though I was not playing RPGs back in the AD&D 2e days. However, this looks like an amazing time and potential source for great gaming moments and anecdotes. Seriously, thank you so much for letting me know about this awesome game and community
YES! DO it! Check out Goodman Games website before you go to see which of their staff members are running games. Also, at Gen Con they run a Tournament which eventually becomes a published module.
Play a "chicken butcher"! Definitely has my attention. You communicate total enthusiasm for DCCRPG and it's infectious! Goodman Games does things right. And Purple Sorcerer's ap is golden. I have used the die roller for all kinds of TTRPGs. This video makes me smile 😊 Cheers!
Dungeon Crawl Classics is basically the old 1980's D&D Red/Blue box sets with modern d20 rules instead of Thac0! I've checked it out before, and am a big fan! Great Vid liches!
This is AMAZING! I’m SO in! Thanks for the tips! I brought the main book already - gonna jump into all these resources next! As an illustrator for TTRPGs - I want to contribute! 😊
Awesome! If you're on Facebook join the DCC RPG Rocks group. Or join their discord server (link in the description of the video). People are always posting about their zines or projects they're working on...looking for editors, artists and more. Also, be on the lookout for the yearly Gongfarmers Almanac Announcement. It's a yearly publication that is 100% created by the community. They'll always need writers, artists, editors, layout people. It take a long time to produce, but it eventually gets turned into a hard cover that Goodman Games sells directly on their website.
DCC looks great and it's beginner set is a fantastic deal. 30 ish US for the rulebook, dice, GM screen and adventure is wildly good. I'm getting the chance to play for the first time later this month and the Judge is running Sailors on the Starless Sea actually.
Love ❤ this! Thanks so much! Just been getting into DCC the last year or so and patiently weening my 5e’ers over to DCC and my groups and I have been having an absolute riot playing! So far we’ve only played Portal and Sailors which I’ve run both a few times each for different groups and am so excited to get into higher level adventures/characters. And weirdly, I just happened to get my hands on the DCC RPG Reference Sheet digest - i can tell it’s going to be very handy! Thanks again for the awesome video! Make some more please! 😊
A lot of awesome people involved with M/DCC whether at Goodman Games or as 3rd party creators. I burnt out on fantasy in my 20s (30 years ago), DCC brought some of the fun back. It's smoke a bong, punk on some punk, let's party and play. Brings back a bit of high school.
@@BasicLiches Oh yeah, and they always have something going on at the con I go to. Waiting for the new version of X-Crawl to drop (after the Kickstarter folks get their's) The mechanic is also really cool for world building around around. Already have stuff fan made stuff, 3rd party, and official stuff stuff that you can plug in with just minor reskinning.
@@BasicLiches I had few games of DCC but it was Lankhmar that really got me into it. Also it's probably the only RPG where I'm willing to play a wizard :D
Hey, this was awesome! Yet to try the game though it's been on my short list for a few years and I've browsed through the manual. Also got the humble bundle recently so I'm stacked with adventures and stuff. Really helpful advice here and great intro for potential players as well!
@@BasicLiches Can't wait now! I'm gonna read the Sailors on the Starless Sea (is that the title?) and begin arranging the game. Just need to get a bunch of people myself included to travel to another town and I think we're set 😁
If I could post that gif of Jack Nicholson nodding with that maniacal look on his face in reply to this video, I would because that's the exact look I had on my face when I say you were talking DCC this week. I'm only just getting started with DCC but it's already taken the top spot for fantasy TTRPGs for me. Awesome video, hope you guys do some more DCC stuff in the future!
man, your ahsome, im all in.My dnd campaign is ending in December and we plan to start the next one staying clear of Hasbro.I have been looking for what third party would suit our group. You had me pausing many times as I would look up each suggestion you made.Thank you for your enthusiastic video, Im sold.
friend of mine told me about this style ttrpg when he and i were discussing some other ones since he runs one of these on wednesdays. pretty informative, thanks.
Great video, loved the breakdown of things that can help get a person started in the game. I already know what I need to get next. My friend and I signed up for a Demo game next week, and I got the First Time Fan Kit yesterday. I can't wait to start diving in, and hopefully running or playing in a game soon.
Ooo, since this is a special interest game inside and already niche hobby, finding an in person game can be tough. Could you do something on the VTT support for playing online and the game listings on Goodman games. I was a roll20 guy until I did the math on the prep time I was taking to get content ready for play. For me, Fantasy Grounds has been a wonderful discovery and a LOT of DCC and MCC stuff is available on that platform. I'm also a Road Crew Judge and I would love it if you could speak to the suppport that program provides for judges. Goodman Games is very supportive of events and I'm proud to advocate for them and help people find their way to these great games.
Great video - thanks for taking the time to explain why you love this game so much! Your enthusiasm is infectious, and I am dusting off my digital copy of DCC and also MCC. I will definitely give it a go. Love the fact that magic can go incredibly right, or wrong. One thing compared to many games is that it looks mega-complex, but that won't stop me. Anyway buddy, great video post, and nice header at the end 🙂
Thank you so much for this video! Goofy, but amazing! I don't want to play D&D, and now I am so excited to be getting into DCC (book ordered and on the way!) ♥
Thanks for the kind words. DCC is a great game with an even greater community. If you're on Facebook be sure to check out the "DCC Rocks" page. You'll get answers to any questions you have, talk to some of the game's creators, and much more. Have a great day!
awesome vid! but one thing that I wonder about is how a prospective Judge would go about stocking a dungeon or how many of a creature should show up when a creature is rolled.
I knew this game wasn't the kind I want to run (preferring the PCs to be nigh invulnerable superheroes worn down through attrition), but good to see what others like about the system, and to know what to expect if I ever sit in on a game. Thanks!
DCC has a reputation for being a super deadly system. It's a little blown out of proportion. Once characters hit 1st level they are hard to take down as long as they're playing smart. But compared to 5E or Pathfinder...it's not a superhero style game system. Thanks for the comment. Hope you get to try DCC someday!
Thanks so much! And yes Goodman Games on Twitch is amazing! Shout out to my fellow paesan Joey Royale who brings the braciole to Twitch each and every month!
One huge question I have is WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR SHIRT? But also I love the explainer and thorough coverage of all that DCC (and MCC!) has to offer! I went to GenCon '24 recently and took advantage of Goodman Games awesome sales they were having there and bought the core rulebook and some other items ("weird dice", The Music of the Spheres is Chaos, the MCC rulebook). Definitely like a blast from the past for me, since I've been playing RPGs since '79-ish.
The DCC community really is the best. Like it's easy to dismiss these sorts of claims as hyperbole, but legit. Couple of third party things to definitely get: Hobonomicon, all the stuff from Doug Kovacs and Wayne Snyder that is "too satanic or anarchistic for Goodman" James McGeorge's Black Sun Death Crawl is what way back when made me say holy shit DCC is next level shit. Donn Stroud's Lesser Key of the Celestial Legion is cleric/deity shit to drive an entire campaign. Wolf, right there with you about DCC being life changing
Ugh...so much awesome 3rd Party stuff got left out of the video. All three of those are amazing! I guess that means we'll just have to make more DCC videos!
I grew up with my reading list being Appendix N during the late '60s and '70s my earliest D&D experiences were with the white box set and Metamorphosis Alpha (the forerunner to Gamma World) in 1976. After we moved to AD&D it all became more codified and serious, but watching this video I am reminded of the silliness and fun we had in those very earliest days. Bob World builder's video espousing the joy of DCC encouraged me to purchase this game , but your love and enthusiasm in this video, plus the really useful support advice you give (Purple sorceror and spellburn) will be the reason I actually get to play this game. I fully expect to rewatch this video over and over bless you for reminding an old hippy/later goth witch lady of the complete fun and joy of 50 years ago. "Take that you fiend!" (If you know, you know!)
I love this comment so so much! I'm glad my love for DCC came through and was able to connect with you. I'm planning on creating some more DCC content (hopefully Bob World Builder will be too). Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
This is awesome! Like a healthy, trippy fever dream with rivers of coffee, magical gasoline, badass gals in pistol bikinis under berry cookie clouds! So I will stick with D&D BUT instead of Pathfinder 2e, I will jump to this and try and ALSO check out Dragonbane ( Drakar och Demonar/ Drake and Demons ) released in the 80s from and by our Swedish neigbhours, cheaper import too since Im Norwegian . Hope you check out and review it, Liches. Even if it isnt as wildhog as DCC 😂
I backed the Kickstarter for Dragonbane! It looks incredible. If we get it to the table you can be sure we will share our thoughts on it. Thanks for the awesome comment Odin!
They do. It's real and it's spectacular! Also, they support it with TONS of excellent adventure modules. I cut it from the video due to time...but the DCC Dying Earth Box Set is set to come out in the next month or so. I'm a big Jack Vance Dying Earth fan and I love that Goodman Games is doing campaign settings on this classic books!
The problem with the dice chain is if you move up the chain, the probability of landing a critical hit diminishes. A d20 gives you a 5% chance of getting a crit, a d24 gives you a 4.16% chance of getting that crit.
Thank you so much! I've written lots for Macabre Vol 2...it's kind of outgrown the zine format. So more will be coming, but it will probably end up being a big campaign book instead. Stay tuned!
The funky dice are the only reason I don’t wanna get into it. It was hard enough to get my players to understand the regular dice, I don’t wanna deal with even more confusion. Not to mention the fact that one set of funky dice costs like 30 bucks in Europe.
That's a fair concern. You could always omit them when you start and just roll the closest die...it probably wouldn't break anything. And then maybe slowly introduce a d7 here or a d16 there. Also, the Crawler's Companion app does include a free dice roller. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
The dice are 30 bucks in America too! They are just a fun toy that brings sparkling wonder back to RPGs, what are these crazy things. But if it's a point of anxiety instead of amusement, the weird dice can largely be ignored. Idea, 3d6DCC gurps style (dice rolling not character building) for the economically minded (both cash and psychic overhead)
My only question is... will DCC have a expanded Monster Manual ? I put the book and weird dice in my Amazon cart, I might buy this even if my 5E group dosen't want to play this.
Funny you should mention that....Goodman Games is launching a Kickstarter on February 21st called "Dungeon Denizens". It's a book FILLED with 500 monsters. They're making a DCC version as well as a 5E version. Goodman Games just did an hour long preview of the books over on their RUclips Channel a few days ago. Hope that helps!
@@BasicLiches Thanks for the info !! The Monster Manual is the whole reason I started playing D&D back in the 80's. Took a 30 year break, and started playing 5E a few years ago. Thanks again, I'll check out the Goodman Games channel !!
Im starting this with a group on discord with my brother and a couple friends. Is there any advice you have or specific resources you know of for playing DCC remotely like that?
I believe DCC has official support within Roll20 and Foundry. Also, on Goodman Games website they offer VTT token packs that use art from their usual band of awesome artists. I've played in games that are entirely theater of the mind on discord and elaborate modules recreated in Foundry. It's basically up to the Judge how much time and energy you want to invest. I personally don't believe DCC gains anything from playing with battle maps, so abstract maps and theater of the mind tends to work very well for me. But do what you feel most comfortable with!
It's not a zine, but Hubris sort of scratches that dark fantasy itch of Darksun. Check it out...it's one of the best campaign settings guides I've ever read.
To be fair you can play DCC any way that suites your table. For most tables the weird fantasy is standard...but definitely not the only way to play. For example, DCC Lankhmar dials back alot of the gonzo stuff.
Good video but that "You're a judge not a game master" bit was cringey. Regardless of whatever Semantics Goodman wants all of the advice you just said is exactly the same advice I've heard about any TTRPG referee/DM//GM/Keeper/Storytelling blah blah since the 1990s. Also I find it funny given the internal logic provided (do what you want with it -> renames Judge to Game Master 😊)
Goodman Games comes out with an over priced box set and when they had a chance to increase the popularity of DCC they ignorently do not put in free funky dice with box set. I'll stick with D100 Dungeon. I love D100 Dungeon by MK Games !
Goodman Games offers a "First Time Fan Kit" that comes with the core rules, a dice set, judge's screen, scratch off character sheets, and a module for $40.
The gonzo description is not accurate at all. Any game session can be gonzo regardless of the session. I have been playing a lot of non-gonzo DCC and inaccurately labeling the system that way drives a lot of people away. Yes, the system supports gonzo play but what is great about it is that it supports many other styles of play.

I just got my Kickstarter of Dying Earth, I cannot wait to runy friends through it. I hope that you make more videos for DCC!
Mine came in not too long ago and I'm stoked to play it. And yes...more DCC videos will be coming! Thanks so much for watching.
subscribing purely for that hilarious transition at 9:25 or so lol
Great info! Cute pup!
She's the greatest! Expect more cameos lol
awesome vid! but one thing that I wonder about is how a prospective Judge would go about stocking a dungeon or how many of a creature should show up when a creature is rolled.
Hope you get to try DCC someday!
this was very useful.... playing my first game tonite
Sailors on the starless sea is amazing and worth hype
Great video! Required viewing!!! And don’t forget the twitch Chanel and pizza party!!!!!
Thanks so much! And yes Goodman Games on Twitch is amazing! Shout out to my fellow paesan Joey Royale who brings the braciole to Twitch each and every month!
I would love to play this. I am looking to see which solo supplements I would need to have a fun solo experience
I keep thinking, because the artwork makes me think of it, that DCC could be set so easily in the comic Coda.
Never heard of Coda before...and now I want it because it looks awesome!
@@BasicLiches I've only managed to read the first part, but I loved it.
Hell yeah, I love DCC!
Awesome! We got more DCC content on the way in the near future!
I'd always point to the cover of Sailors. And just go THIS HAPPENS.
That Doug Kovacs artwork does wonders to stoke the players imagination! Love it!
The DCC community really is the best. Like it's easy to dismiss these sorts of claims as hyperbole, but legit.
Couple of third party things to definitely get:
Hobonomicon, all the stuff from Doug Kovacs and Wayne Snyder that is "too satanic or anarchistic for Goodman"
James McGeorge's Black Sun Death Crawl is what way back when made me say holy shit DCC is next level shit.
Great content, Thank you !!!
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it!
I am well into Mork Borg but this looks really damn cool as well as MCC 🤟
Judge describes a dnd dm perfectly.
Just got our beginner pack in the mail. I am lost lol havent played table top in many many years.
They have a lankmar book, fuck it I am sold, take my money
Wolf, make more Macabre! It's awesome, make some more. Maybe map the areas around a sample Castle Neckrovania
Thank you so much! I've written lots for Macabre Vol 2...it's kind of outgrown the zine format. So more will be coming, but it will probably end up being a big campaign book instead. Stay tuned!
@@BasicLiches That sounds absolutely fantastic!!
Metal!
Hell yeah!
Da dare was some cool ass commentary dude
Thanks!
Hello! So like, how many tries did it took for that manual throw/catch?
Not too many...but there is an easter egg at the very end of the video that you might be interested in!
You can use the free dice roller, and also just get sets of "only the funky dice" to complete an existing set for like seven bucks.
Thanks !
My pleasure!
What movie was that, where the guy took an arrow to the chest? LOL
Barbarian Queen.
I love DCC
Is your Zine still available? The link is broken. Also any info on what’s inside?
Ive been making the dice sets for GG for years and still I haven't played once. Im too nervous to join a demo night 😅
Is there a zine for playing a darksun style game?
It's not a zine, but Hubris sort of scratches that dark fantasy itch of Darksun. Check it out...it's one of the best campaign settings guides I've ever read.
So, it's more "Heavy Metal" than Lord Of The Rings. The "I'm with the band" pages makes more sense now.
Positive comment
Funky dice?
Welp, time to adapt it to work with only D6s and D20s
I think everybody sold a lot to forget Wizards and California's Coasts
Too gonzo-weird-funcky for me. It's sort of a deal breaker. I like classic fantasy.
To be fair you can play DCC any way that suites your table. For most tables the weird fantasy is standard...but definitely not the only way to play. For example, DCC Lankhmar dials back alot of the gonzo stuff.
@@BasicLiches Can you easily adapt OSE mega dungeons and zines to DCC?
14:06 😂
Good video but that "You're a judge not a game master" bit was cringey. Regardless of whatever Semantics Goodman wants all of the advice you just said is exactly the same advice I've heard about any TTRPG referee/DM//GM/Keeper/Storytelling blah blah since the 1990s. Also I find it funny given the internal logic provided (do what you want with it -> renames Judge to Game Master 😊)
lol DCC RPG is the GOAT but jazz > metal
Goodman Games comes out with an over priced box set and when they had a chance to increase the popularity of DCC they ignorently do not put in free funky dice with box set.
I'll stick with D100 Dungeon.
I love D100 Dungeon by
MK Games !
Goodman Games offers a "First Time Fan Kit" that comes with the core rules, a dice set, judge's screen, scratch off character sheets, and a module for $40.
Dude: Wierd Frontiers. Thou Shalt Play David Baity's Magnum Opus, for it is cool. Just, So, Cool.
Hell Yeah! I recently picked it up. It's MASSIVE! Can't wait to cobble together some people to try it out!
The gonzo description is not accurate at all. Any game session can be gonzo regardless of the session. I have been playing a lot of non-gonzo DCC and inaccurately labeling the system that way drives a lot of people away. Yes, the system supports gonzo play but what is great about it is that it supports many other styles of play.
nah woke shit puts me off
Glad I didn’t buy this. You got to get politically minded.
