Winter wolf activity on a trail through the woods

  • We retrieved this footage yesterday from a camera in the Bug Creek Pack territory. The video shows all of the wolf footage (along with some other critters!) recorded on this camera from December 1 to April 10, our wolf pack/population survey period. And we can confidently say there is at least one big fluffy old wolf in the area!
This one example highlights the fun and challenge of making sense of wolf pack dynamics during winter using trail cameras. Of course, this is only 1 of about 20 cameras we have in this pack’s territory so we have a lot more data on this pack than just this camera.
And this also highlights why having numerous cameras in a pack’s territory to get repeated observations of packs throughout winter is important to get accurate data. Certainly, if you only had a single camera like this, it would be very difficult to make any conclusions with a high-level of confidence.
In total, we had almost 350 cameras deployed this winter so we have lots of footage to go through in the upcoming months but certainly fun to spend time pouring over the footage and analyzing the data.

Thank you, Amazing scenery, they all look healthy. Noted how "fluffy" the fox appeared, and does the deer coat change colors, from tan in the Spring to orange in the Fall?

I loved the part where alpha male (I think it was) sort of looks the cam straight into the lens and then stomps those big ol’ front paws! they are certainly Not canines in the sense of ‘just like dogs’ (I spent some time around a real one long ago). having one as anything other than these you film is cruelty (meaning ‘domesticated.’) love this channel and knowing there Are so many wild packs!

Wolf now Deer, now Deer then Wolf. But the fox just nonchalantly walks through. Thank you for the post
