The short tail is thematic, lizards frequently lose part of their tail as an escape strategy and will regrow the tail or just heal up and go about their lizard life.

It's okay if your beads aren't regular, seed beads usually aren't (they're not even "square", they're usually less high than they're wide), unless you go for brand ones where they take a lot of pain to make the beads even. But regular cheap seed beads often vary in width and height, so that makes yours closer to the real thing in a way xD
    What a fun project 😊

    • @charliemayfilms1550

Yeah these are made with pony beads as the person above me said which are moulded plastic so they’re usually pretty even. Making these things with different size beads makes it really wonky. As they mentioned in the video casting them would probably be better for a cleaner result. But it’s still very cool and unique!

I make kandi and pony beads are moulded plastic so they’re really not that irregular. Seed beads which are the tiny glass ones are, but the plastic pony beads really aren’t. They’re specific millimetres and they tend to stay around that. Any differences would be extremely subtle. There’s really no visual size difference. If you’ve ever tried making kandi with different sized beads you’ll see it gets really wonky. When you increase the size the variation actually becomes less than it would if they were that different in small form.

    Such a perfect lizard!
I think "stealing" from another artist is never really stealing. Every artist has a different style and their own way of creating things. You could invite one artist to steal from and who gives 10 other artist a step by step instructions how to copy a chosen artwork. At the end you will have 10 different results. Similar but different.
Do you know these "Artnights"? Several people meet to repaint one picture. All are given the same colours, the same brushes, tools... And there is one person giving clear instructions. Which colours to use, where to paint, what to paint.... In the end there are all different. Same motif but different pictures. So, go on "stealing" and discover new techniques! ❤

This giant bead lizard inspired me - not in ceramics, or a giant project, but to dig out my old seed beads and make myself some tiny bead lizard earrings. The size variation that the ceramic beads came out with was what really got me thinking about it, since seed beads have a surprising amount of size variation too. At such a tiny scale, a fraction of a millimetre can be a huge difference!

I randomly stumbled upon your videos a few weeks ago just from searching "pottery turning" and I immediately subscribed; then I caught one of your videos where you were trying to turn like Florian Gadsby, whom I've been subscribed to for a while. I've never turned pottery, I've always loved watching it and I'd love to try it. But I have to say that I just love the art community: the way people are willing to put trials and experiments out on display for the benefit of people who enjoy the craft, and really breaking through that hesitation of trying it. You make some absolutely beautiful pieces, and you make it look so easy (even as you talk about how hard it is). I'll get a potter's wheel one of these days, and I'll watch your videos for tips and tricks! Thanks for learning as you teach!

Good to see the process and not knowing everything at start. The finding out as you go-part is very inspiring and fun, so are you!

Honestly, I think the fact that they're not all uniform in exact shape and size is true to nature, I've made loads of these lizards with those plastic beads and with little glass beads for mini lizards, and they're never all exactly the same shape or size, so I think that is a good character adding happy accident :)

That’s so stinkin precious. It would be so cute to do a whole line of oversized nostalgic arts and crafts. Like macaroni necklaces, and those beads we used to put in the oven to fuse together. I don’t even know what they’re called.

My millenial babysitter used to make these little lizards with me and for me all the time, it reminds me of the dust of summer on my hands as I spun the beads between my fingers, my favorite one was coffee colors, I still have it for our tractor mower

Man, this is SUCH a cool project!! Imagine making giant lizards like this and embedding them within a garden pathway, or having one of those plastered into a wall, or maybe even making one as a wall hanging! I love it so much!
