I have one question. WHO THOUGHT THAN IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE PLATFORMERS SECTION, IN A FIXED CAMERA ANGLE GAME ?!?!?!?!? This is easily the worst idea ever made.
Survival Horror is definitely a bad genre to mess up, since it inherently has high difficulty. Martian Gothic is a good example that was also on the PS1, the game actually has an intrigging plot and some cool stuff, but it being a super strict survival horror game where you can't permanently kill any of the enemies, with limited saves, and ammo (With no melee!) and some obnoxious instant kill puzzle traps means that even for someone like me who wants to play it due to the plot, has to put with having backup saves every where and loading a save the instant even the slightest setback happens to avoid a potential softlock.
@monotonallizard8916 if you play it and can get it running play the pc version. It is way better then the PS1 version. Like MIB pc to ps1 quality upgrade good.
This and your long-form exploring every Jurassic Park spin-off game videos are amazing. You deserve way more subs. Thanks for the time and effort and dark places you went to making this video and playing this game for us.
holy crap, the Codename 47 "i need to use the bathroom" voice clip had me dying laughing great video, your analysis is in-depth and very entertaining to watch.
This game feels like they mapped out the game, programmed it, fought through the struggle of creating it even as they clearly stopped caring by the end, and when they finished the game - they realized they forgot to add a story. I know there were the little bits of notes and such in the first two missions, excluding New York of course, but beyond that, how did any of these bits connect? How did the small bits we DID get form together into even a self-contained story? Even taking how horribly the game is put together and controls out of it, the meat of the game is completely incomprehensible. Edit: I got to the part of him trying to explain it, and honestly, given the cutscenes are so simplistic and could've easily been added in in post, I'm still not convinced by theory isn't true.
Im yet to finish the vid, but I’m glad you enjoyed the film. I have mixed feelings on what it says, but it still is so charming in its own right. The comic also feels like something right up my alley as I’m obsessed with American folklore/history in general. You’re very good at making anything you liked sound like a fun read. Have a good day!
To add onto this og comment knowing that you, someone I look forward to watching because they aren’t overtly negative and always having something constructive to say, absolutely despising this game is saying something. The world of M.I.B would’ve made a great video game, I think, and I’m happy you saw the potential there too. I would’ve preferred something more akin to a visual novel, but that’s my tastes. An action game (a good one) would’ve fit better in the end. God it sucks this game is just that bad.
I had the demo of this on PC in the 90s, and I could not even figure out what to do at the start. I don't think I ever left the building, and it would explode every time with no explanation why lol. So fustrating.
Y'know, I don't think I appreciated how good of a Resident Evil clone Deep Fear is until I saw this video. 'Cause, wow. This game really sucks. And every glimpse of how it could have been good, or at least interesting, just made me feel really sad.
I was 10 years old when this game came out I never made it past the bomb scene and I tried all day and night. I never felt so defeated from a video game.
I played the demo from a magazine in 1999 and it made me learn about DirectX being needed, I had some Starwars games and Quake installed but could not run them until this demo disc installed what I needed, so terrible game...and beacon of hope for me lol
Coming from the WR speedrun holder of this game, i'm sorry it was VERY BAD to you. Big fan of Agent L's spin kick lol. Alot of your review I do agree with...but I will say, the first 2 levels were great concepts (The Amazon being my favorite level concept). I always loved how the PC version had the special cheat code where you could play as Agent X....aka Agent Mulder from X-Files. Fyi, I do remember the "disk" glitch you mentioned and...that's kind of one of the reasons I liked the PS1 version the most. Made that "puzzle" easier. Keep in mind, I may be a fan of the concepts of the levels but the design, controls, and depth perception are abysmal. Thank you for your review. You gained a subscriber.
43:20 the vending machine that doesn't do anything, actually will give you a health pack if you press the button then give it a kick (just like shitty vending machines in real life) though not like you're gonna go back to replay the game to exploit a small first aid kit, if I'm being honest. 45:15 feeding the dog, yeah, me too buddy, i remembered giving the meat to the dog back in the early 2000s when i got the game as a gift. apparently I'm misremembering, apparently subconsciously wishing for more normal game logic it would seem. 59:30 how odd, i tried for 10 mins when i played this last week (theres coincidence for you) to give the meat to the damn dog on the ps1 version and it just wouldn't have it, maybe each game has its own little curses?
1:04:57 The Resident Evil Outbreak theme exists. I think that alone puts RE music in a great spot. Seriously, look up the main RE Outbreak Theme if you've never heard it, it's just amazing. Sure it's not a RE game contemporary to this MIB's game release, but it needs to be heard. It might be the best music track in the series imo. Think you'll ever cover the PS2 X-Files game? Another franchise that oddly went the Resident Evil style route. This game really makes me think of that one.
I sat through two and a half hours of this, and loved every bloody minute of it! A brilliant dissection of a truly awful game. Appreciate the love you have for the original Tomb Raider, as well. I still come back to it every couple of years. The tank controls are quite annoying, but if you play the tutorial first, it does still hold up. So thanks, mate. Only seven videos from you to watch, but I know I'm in for a great time. ❤
Great video! Just one small addition: if I remember correctly, L's roundhouse kick does a little more damage than J's and K's kicks, compensating for its long windup time. It doesn't make this game any better by any means, but at least there's that...
It's so interesting how amazingly bad this game is and yet this is the first I've ever heard of it! Thank you for the sacrifice you performed in order to talk more about this piece of shit game
I actually have encountered the swapping items for another bug before in ps1 version of diablo. It usually swaps some item in town for a potion or something like that ( sometimes a item ) and funny enough if you pick it up or sell it, leave and come back there's another one waiting in the same spot. Although if you try to put more than one of the replacements on the ground it counts the others as dupes and deletes them. The most significant event of this happening was one time it swapped out the golden elixer quest item out for a mana potion. Although not required to beat the game this prevents getting the veil of steel unique helmet which is useful as it has very high resistances so i had to continue without it.
Glad you’ve finally made a long video again. I hated this game, too! Could never get passed the first bit. You want another awful PS1 game? The movie tie-in for Virus.
56:35 why shouldn't you have to fight through the same opponents as before you saved the game? you're wanting to be able to load a save and have the enemies you defeated AFTER the save to somehow not be there when you load it?
There was a promotion for the game when it was released where you had to design an alien character and draw a picture of it. Me and mum decided to enter it, and surprisingly we won a copy of the game as a prize haha. I don't even know why I bothered because as a child aliens freaked me out so much, like even E.T. gave me nightmares, and I remember the MIB game just being too scary for me.
Mr.Lizard, what did you do to find the old marketing material for this title? I'd love to take a look at it, did you just search Google basically or do their books/docs search?
Not an epileptic, but highly appreciative for the flashing lights warnings. I feel like all videos need some disclaimer at the beginning, or the way you did it.
I highly doubt those lights that played in the video would even cause any type of epileptic seizures, They don’t take up hardly that much of the screen and the flashing lights aren’t fast
@@DragonSlicer True, but imo if you don't know the details of how flashing lights are usually marked, it's better to be overcautious than to shrug and let flashing bits play unwarned imo.
I play this game in the year of the release, I rent it for PC on a local store. I play it a lot because the idea of a Men in Black game with diferent missions and agents was really interesting. Now I understand why I never finish the Antartica: I ALWAYS had the exact same bug of the meat and the disk. By they way, I think the game is trying to copy Alone in the Dark not Resident Evil. The Search action and the combat are exactly the same than in those games.
You had me in tears from laughing with this one, i love your style. back in the days wehn ive been a little one i made it trough this game, but i totally forgot everything probably for my own good. Thanks for your vid, it was a blast.

Amazing video. Absolutely a delight to see this game dissected so thoroughly. I think 99% of players never got past the bomb puzzle at the beginning of the game. Insane to see what the rest of it had in store. Also interesting to see the elements of the game that would've worked as an original survival horror game based on the MIB comics. Looks like the licensing held this one back in a big way (time crunches etc). That being said, the game probably only got produced because of the movie tie in elements.
Thanks to this game's demo which I got from a magazine, I learned that my computer needed DirectX back in 1999 to play 3d games. After this I fell into the world of magazine demo discs, Quake and Star Wars Dark Forces 2 which I had already installed but could never run due to the 3d error 😁 of course I was 10yo at the time and had only basic English language skills to know what to do
If I had to have a guess... they got Wanted... Before Wanted got Wanted. Okay let me explain, in 2003 Wanted the Comic was released. It was a massive Smash Hit, I can't say it's aged well, I find it was more a "the style at the time" sorta comic. So since it was so big and comic book movies were still in aweird spot, though X-Men was killing it (even with X3 not doing so good), they made a movie in 2008. Now here is the thing if you haven't seen the movie or haven't read the comic... They are COMPLETELY different. The comic is edgy, with Supervillains taking over the world and then brainwashing everyone to forget about the Super hero vs Villain wars that devastated the planet. They rule the world in secret coz well, it's easier that way. I won't get into spoilers but te term Wanted DOESN'T end up referring to wanted dead or alive, but being wanted in an uncaring world. In the movie it's about secret society assassins who "kill one to save a thousand". Wanted in the movie DOES mean Wanted Dead or Alive and it's overall f*ckin garbage. coupla scenes stand out, mostly it's just trash. Aside from the main characters "suit", the scene where they practice on dead bodies, it's a completely different story, oh and the curving bullets thing, that's the movie. So Grin were hired to make a Game based on the Movie... HOWEVER they wanted to make a COMIC based game, but they weren't hired by Top Cow, they were hired by Universal, they had to please them, not the OG comic book company. So the game has Curving bullets, the character design, the f*ckin BS with the threads, etc. BUT the character attitude, the tone and overall feel of the game, is more like the comic. Basically they had to make it look like the Movie, but were able to give it a feel like the comic and overall, I feel it did a good job, of course they only had so much they could do. Based on what you say in le Video, I think the same thing happened here, he devs were comic book fans at heart, tried to make it a more faithful to comic, but since they were being paid by the movie studio had to use the likenesses and the tone of the movie. I feel though they sadly failed on both counts by this video.
L is using the isosceles stance. Because it is a beginner stance, it lacks the nuance that J has (who is using the weaver stance). The dead give aways for a isosceles stance are feet parallel and arms almost locked outwards. The weave has one arm dead out with another bent and supporting with one foot slightly forward and the person leaning into the gun. But I haven't had prof firearms training in like 10 years so I'm sure someone will swoop in with a "well actually".
Funny, I only played a demo of this game that had like a cryptic puzzle where a bomb would explode. It didn't make me wanna play the full version, but I kinda felt like the game was "ok" for what it was and then totally forgot about its existence. Now, after watching you play, I'm SO GLAD I dodged this bullet and used my money elsewhere.
This game wormed inside your head like bloodborne wormed inside mine, i understand that hustle (even if bloodborne (which i hate) is still way better compared to this pile of garbage)
I had this game and I used to think it was cool. Well, really because of the atmosphere and the sheer mystery of whatever was the game since I NEVER GOT PAST THE FREAKING BOMB
This was a wild ride to listen to. I felt your pain and genuinely hope you got something fun after all this shit. I am so glad I skipped by this game as a kid because no way would it have been anything but utter disappointment given how much I enjoyed Men In Black the movie.
That moment, when you compared tomb raider jumping to this, then the song "Ring of Fire" played just enough for "I Fell" I just died myself! I kept rewinding and laughing again and again at it!
I was looking through the store in a mall, and I found out there was actually another game for the men in Black movie. Forgot the name though, but it was for ps2.
I downloaded a demo of this game and as wee little lad I couldn't figure the game out. I loved Men in Black so when I was a slightly older kid I was still inclined to grab the game for PC when I saw it at GameStop for $20 but I'm kinda glad I didn't actually pick it up.
Gaming was difficult for me in the 90s most of the times when I bought a new game for my PC and installed it it just wouldn’t fucking work which is why I moved on to more of a Consol type passive gaming style. Playing this game when I was desperately bored and wanting to try something new was frustrating demoralizing and ultimately regrettable decision is just so terrible. Wasting your money as a child really sucks.
Lord, I've been waiting for a video like this for years (no joke, I always search 'MIB psx retrospective'). I had this game when I was 6, it took me years to make it to the second level (snow level). I thought I was extremely bad at the game, only later growing up I realized how terrible the game was I'm also looking for a 'Batman&Robin PSX retrospective' (it sucks)
I remember seeing my mother's boss's son had this game on the PC and thinking this game looked good and I never could play it since I was a GBC and N64 kid. I have been looking for it for a long time but seeing this video I'm so glad I have never played it myself
the Men in Black song by Will Smith is actually a ripoff of Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots," which to me is an added meta-layer to the lore of the movie considering what the iconic neuralyzer does
@@ashreprobite3774 he's not sampling though, there's also a thing called "flips" it's much more of a flip than a sample; god there's always some reddit dork like this lurking anywhere to try and 'correct' whatever because they can't just let things be smh
the crazy part about this is that men is black movies is based on a comic book created by Lowell Cunningham. so they literally should've pulled from the source material and build the game around it, but instead they piggyback from the movies that's loosely based on the comic book; with little to go by bcuz the movies altered from the source material and they didn't even have the rights to the actors likeness and couldn't get the actors back to do voice acting. this shit is shovelware.
Not that it really matters, but i think the survival horror style, in addition to being a rip of RE, was also a bit of a call back to the original comics the movie was based off of. The movie took some liberties with the source material. And the word Liberties is doing a fuck ton of heavy lifting. The original comics were dark. Like really dark.
>Thank God the classic Resident Evil games aren't first person shooters. I think you mean "Thank God *most* classic Resident Evil games aren't first person shooters."
Only game that achieved what MIB wanted to do here was Hybrid Haven. Only that one was an RPG with fight mechanics. But the story. The story would have worked for an MIB story.

He's probably so cool, he wouldn't write a sneaky "I wonder who the friend was. He sounds pretty hot" comment about himself!

After this I fell into the world of magazine demo discs, Quake and Star Wars Dark Forces 2 which I had already installed but could never run due to the 3d error 😁 of course I was 10yo at the time and had only basic English language skills to know what to do
so its control in the late 90s
You're right but I'm mad.
Love the videos so far, the FNAF video is too notch. Any hope on weeing Eternal Darkness in the future?
Does this game not have music?
Rad video, deserves more views!
3:09 i saw some fanmade Residen Evil game/mod that used these exact backgrounds. I wondered why they looked so authentically PS1-ish.
Woah, something not dinosaur related?
I snuck a couple in just to keep up appearances.
I loved Men in Black so when I was a slightly older kid I was still inclined to grab the game for PC when I saw it at GameStop for $20 but I'm kinda glad I didn't actually pick it up.
is this about men in black game or tomb raider
Gaming was difficult for me in the 90s most of the times when I bought a new game for my PC and installed it it just wouldn’t fucking work which is why I moved on to more of a Consol type passive gaming style.
Playing this game when I was desperately bored and wanting to try something new was frustrating demoralizing and ultimately regrettable decision is just so terrible.
Wasting your money as a child really sucks.
I had no idea they made a video game based on Men in Black.
Lord, I've been waiting for a video like this for years (no joke, I always search 'MIB psx retrospective'). I had this game when I was 6, it took me years to make it to the second level (snow level). I thought I was extremely bad at the game, only later growing up I realized how terrible the game was
I'm also looking for a 'Batman&Robin PSX retrospective' (it sucks)
For the record, I'm talking about the PSX version
I played this game loads on the PC. It was so rough.
Theres actually a fps MIB game for the ps1 based on the animated series MIB Crackdown. Its surprisingly good.
I remember seeing my mother's boss's son had this game on the PC and thinking this game looked good and I never could play it since I was a GBC and N64 kid. I have been looking for it for a long time but seeing this video I'm so glad I have never played it myself
the Men in Black song by Will Smith is actually a ripoff of Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots," which to me is an added meta-layer to the lore of the movie considering what the iconic neuralyzer does
My mind was blown! That song is awesome.
Even his other movie song, "Wild Wild West" rips off an older song.
there's a thing in music called "sampling"
@@ashreprobite3774 he's not sampling though, there's also a thing called "flips" it's much more of a flip than a sample; god there's always some reddit dork like this lurking anywhere to try and 'correct' whatever because they can't just let things be smh
I wish I'd known that while making this; I would've hid Forget Me Nots somewhere in the video.
Great video. Very well scripted and put together, and your accent just made it even better. 😊👍
26:00 see: Resident Evil Survivor.
Also. sorry to say that this video just makes me want to play MIB.
the crazy part about this is that men is black movies is based on a comic book created by Lowell Cunningham. so they literally should've pulled from the source material and build the game around it, but instead they piggyback from the movies that's loosely based on the comic book; with little to go by bcuz the movies altered from the source material and they didn't even have the rights to the actors likeness and couldn't get the actors back to do voice acting. this shit is shovelware.
Kay punches like he just heard a G.I. Jane joke!
Also please do a playthourgh of the Ring dreamcast game. Please please please.
How awesome would a proper MIB game be
Is this why we dont have any mote men in black games? (Except a bare bones mobile game)
This was the first game I ever played, it was my introduction to all gaming 😂
Hmmm. A 2.5 hour video of some terrible game I absolutely will never play for more than 5 mins.... Refill my drink and grab the snacks!
Great video, thank you!
Is this game really where the "I have to go now" meme came from? If so then the game is redeemed just on that alone.
amazing video. fulfilled the life long dream I've had since playing this game in the 90s with a friend one night and us being like WTF.. eventually I knew one day we would get answers
