Isshin-ryū Karatedō - Naihanchi Kata Traditionally the third karate kata Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei taught in the Isshin-ryū Karate syllabus. Performed in Nago, Okinawa August 2019
There are some interesting lessons I have observed from this kata. You never go backwards or retreat! You are not standing still by any means, you shift your body position so that the attacker does not control your position. I have seen Sensei Advincula use his legs in a sweeping motion to avoid leg attacks, but others use them to attack the opponents legs. I'm sure he would do that "when the opportunity presents itself". Every time I view this video I gain a bit more knowledge! Thank you for sharing this information.
Mr. Advincula - thank you for sharing Naihanchi Kata and it looks like Mr. Shimabuku version. Your performance is very powerful and solid - beautiful indeed. I have read that Mr. Shimabuku would sometimes vary his performance of kata - Is this true?
Yes it is true. When he was in good health his kata were fast and fluid. As he got older, he complained about having asthma and would say during different periods on his two visits to the USA that he wasn't feeling good. He told me that many took films of him and now, "Many now see old man kata". So on films taken in the USA in 1964 and 1966 can be good, great or very poor. Films of him taken on Okinawa in 1958 show him performing kata in his own dojo performing kata very fast and fluid. And as we all know, kata can be performed many depending on what the performer is emphasizing.
I was there for this :) !

Yes at my Megami garden dojo.
Arcenio Advincula is it open to the public?
