LOVE those steelies. Just to note, from '87-'89, the GTI had a 1.8L 16V. From '90-'92 it was the 2.0L engine. They're mostly the same other than the 1.8 using an 86.4mm stroke while the 2.0 uses a 92.8mm stroke.
Good Idea. There are some challenges that have off the shelf kits. But you did gove some incorrect info. 2.016V was available from 1990-1992 on the 16V GTi and GLI “big bumper” I can go deeper into the +\~ of what was done. However. I appreciate the efforts. Hard to really know the VW MK2 options unless you a tried and true VW geek
Guessing the oddball ignition wire is there because you needed the hall sender on #4? I was able to slip mine over my autotech wires when I did my motronic swap about 15 years ago. I've ripped that out and am putting the finishing touches on my carb swap. I went with a Saab vac advance distributor instead of using the old electronics though.
Great videos! Glad to see people are still doing this conversion in 2020. My only technical question is about the vacuum setup. I can see in the videos you kept the main line that would go from the stock intake manifold to the brake booster. How did you hook this up to the carb setup? I've read you need a vacuum balance bar to have steady/usable vacuum?
Thanks for watching and commenting. We actually did not hook up any vacuum lines to the carbs. So, I believe the information you were given regarding the vacuum balance bar to be incorrect. This set up is just as simple as it looks. I hope my answer helps.
You typically do need a balance bar for a clean vacuum however it also depends on the cam setup as well. With big lift cams and some different advance/retard on the cams can have a serious effect on the vacuum at lower rpm. With the cams in my car I have not seen any negative effects with vacuum on the brake booster. I am only tapped in on one runner and it works perfectly. Hope that helps.
I have a 1992 Passat, same engine. I'm looking at carb swap or just bolt a MK1 or MK2 diesel in it. That CIS is driving me insane. I got a lot of good service from it so it doesn't owe me anything but now it's acting pretty stupid. Out the door, what was the price tag on this setup and do you think you'd suggest it for a daily driver? My engine is stock and I just want to drive it. I'm not racing or trying to do performance type stuff. I just want to get there and back. Tearing that CIS out and cleaning up my engine compartment would be really satisfying.
The entire thing was just under 500. It will require some fab on your part and tuning, but it's probably a good alternative to a csi system that nobody makes parts for.
@@Driven2Compete Understood. Yea, this CIS system is orphaned. Noone has parts and anyone that knew the system is retired or dead. I need this thing to drive. I don't want to go to another 3rd party EFI system. I don't like EFI. Thhose motorcycle carbs don't look like a ton of fun to work on but I can deal with them.
The car goes great when you floor the throttle but what is it like for on/ off throttle response at low speed as in a traffic jam. Is it jerky as many motorcycles are
@justinMacPhee it was a friend's car and the car ran fantastic on the higher rev range but surged on the lower rpm range. He chose to do a complete k20 motor, trans, computer and guages swap.
I love his GTI. Just going for a ride and having him row through the gears going around corners....just awesome.

Super clean mk2 👍
What an amazing machine thanks for the ride 👍👽😎

Sounds like a solid plan! You are correct about the plug wire. I hope your project turns out well. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Driven2Compete While we're all here..is that the stock radiator?
@@UberWagen it is
@@Driven2Compete do you know what size jets were installed?
@Calvin reach out to beastmode builds as thus was his build. He may remember the jet size. He has since completed a k20 swap.

The balance bar is really good if you're using any kind of vacuum reference for ignition advance.
The front badge looks full, why is that? Most of them are like cut letters!

Do you know if i would be able to convert my golf mk2 1.8 GL from a single to a twin carb setup?
I've seen them at shows. You just need an manifold to swap out a single to dual set up.

It's jerky off idle and low rpm.
