I remember these SOHC 8V engines. I built a couple of these. The German spec 9A ( here in the States ) was the engine to have if you wanted a good build. It came with the 10.1:1 CR pistons. Stout little engines but they do better as turbocharged units. Nowadays if I were to build one I would skip these and go for the 1.8T...same engine just with 5 valve head. The make nice projects!! Would make an MK1 go like the wind!! Glad to see someone is still into these older cars. They have so much more character than the new Volkswagens.
Here in Brazil, this engine is know as AP and it was used by VW until 2005 if I'm not mistaken. Very reliable engine.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos I am from South Africa
Here in Brazil this engine is legendary, it's called A.P. (Alta Performance (High Performance)), i have one in my VW Passat 1.8 1986 and works pretty well. Sorry if I wrote something wrong, i'm drunk as fuck right now. PASSAT TURBÃO 3KILIMEI .
Since you went so far as removing the valve cover and changing the belt pulley, you could also replace the belt and remove the cylinder head to check the valves and cylinder walls. You could have removed the oil sump and checked the oil pump. All in all a great job done with all the tin parts.
i igree!
and water pump change...
The cylinder head bolts of this engine deform when being tightened. So you would have to buy new ones if you want to remove the head.
@@joshuatassone8764 that's weird are they meant to?
@@ricky107_ Based on my knowledge, yes.
Nice work. For a complete work, you can clean the pistons, replace the head gasket and bearings. A lot of cars used this engine here in Brasil, in 90's was common a 1.8s ethanol version, with 12.3:1 of compression and Pierburg 2E, they came with 106cv from factory.
That model of engine was the heart of almost all VW models here in Brazil from the 70's until 2010's and many people associate the decay of VW here because they don't use it anymore. If you search for "AP Engine" or "AP Engine Turbo" here on youtube you're going to get tons of brazilian videos about that engine.
A P E Z I N H O
These are good strong reliable engines, had one in my jetta mk2 in South Africa. Done a mp9 fuel injection on it after a while and ran strong as hell!
Had this engine in my MK2 Golf GL. Went really well. Only problem I had was having to replace the plastic carb manifold mounting several times as they like to split. 90hp and decent torque.
Your channel is awesome!! Great editing and I love your accents!! Keep the videos coming. I am working on a 1980 mk1 Convertible myself on my channel.
How can you not like a clean engine? A clean engine runs cooler and therefore longer. Thumbs Up. I think I would have changed the timing belt as well, myself. A ton easier then when it is installed...
This young lad did an awesome work, he is talented for his age, and all I read are silly comments below...Keep up the good work, great editing also.
Nice. But here's a tip: Before polishing anything, make sure it's cleaned first. The valve cover you should wire brushed first then polishing that way you would had the polished bright look that you were looking for! But keep doing what you're doing because we all start somewere!
Now it is nice and clean for a mechanic to work with.
Good job on the refresh. I would suggest wearing safety glasses when working with that drill brush, as those individual metal strands sometimes shoot out.
you forgat something.... vavle cover and replace head gasket..... so much work without the most important one....
24:28 that’s the best feeling when working with old cars and sheared bolts. Couldn’t have put it better “Nice”.
In Brazil this is the most prepared engine for high power. called "AP" alta potência and came out in several cars of own brand: gol mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4, Santana mk1 mk2, Passat b1, Apollo, polo classic, Jetta mk6, golf mk3 and mk4, Voyage mk1, Saveiro mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4, parati mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4, pointer, Logus, van And diesel version as in Kombi and Saveiro
I don't think I've seen a direct acting overhead cam IRL before. Nice!
stoped playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 to watch this ..beautifull to watch...freakin cool
Nice work! Just discovered your channel. Look forward to more!

Great work. Congrads!
I have to do this to my mk2 1.8..god work bro 👍.

Great job and skills!! Hope I can have this done on mine
Nice job! the engine looks much better👍
You’ve done great job. In future show us more of what you did on the inside of the engine.
Amazing work
Very nice work!
This is the most bulletproof VW 4 banger known to mankind!!!! IMO
Correct.
dont forget the 1.9 TDI
@@Pain5k in terms of reliability older engines are better even though they might be more pollutant and lacking technology, my grandpa had a 1.6 diesel passat b2 that engine was a tank, car got scrapped unfortunately

.complimenti ragazzo..
that engine is called AP, there is 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 versions. it's the most popular engine here in Brazil, cuz it can hold high presures of turbo, it's really cheap and u can find it anywhere. we have cars with almost 2000 HP using this engine.
i really would LOVE to know how your getting 2000hp out of a 8v 1.6 🤦🏻♂️
@@vdubskiee5356 well then search for the AP engine and enjoy :)
Bro! So dope
Great job, it will be great if the garden is protected too from oils and cleaning products not only the engine ;)
Nice project.
I'm most concerned with the spark plug threads for cyl. #2. Were they galled up, or was that just the plug?
Nice job! 👌👌👌
excellent skill very good video 👍🏻
Satisfying to watch
Looks nice )
Agree, the Sparkplug threads are definitely unhappy and sad :(. A lot of work involved and think some people do not realise just hard it is doing this kind of project. And of course, we always need the ubiquitous can(s) of WD40 or Equivalent, I know I have used up many a can in my time doing projects like this. Usually helping my mates.
you might be the right person to ask. i'm looking to convert a manual mk1 engine to automatic. besides the gear box what else do i need ? thanks
engine AP 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0. His in Brazil the engine is very good. "AP" Alta Performance.

Hi I just in middle on this project and I not find mount Engine and gear box you know wher I can buy mount
I know this was a while ago but how long did it take to do? I’ve got same engine in a VW Scirocco Mk2 and it’s my daily ride. Could this be done in a weekend do you think? Thanks 🙏
Hey, just wanted to ask, do these also come in golf mk2? and if they do, they fit well etc. right?
Oh man! I had a Golf Mk2 with an 1,6 75 HP engine, which is basically the same as this one (except for some internal things).
The bracket that you removed around 9:33, does anyone know what it is for? I've worked on this motor myself and never seen it before.
How is possible to put distributor in position I have remove wrong way Audi 80 1.8s
This engine is very popular in Brasil, we call this motor A.P.
Why A.P
@@sunnydoes7200 A.P means ("alta performance" translated to English is "High performance".

Hello and thank you for the video, where did you find the screw that tightens the belt cover? Mine is damaged. Thanks Memphis (at 28 min 28 sec) 😁
Hi man nice work
Is it missing a camshaft journal cap between cylinder 3 and 4?

great video.
be sure to wear PPE when dealing with oil or fuel.
good job thanks
nice work dUdE -_-
I found a total gem of a engine!
A 1600 engine for sale for only 250 euro’s! Sadly it does not come with a transmission. I have a build project coming up in 2 years time which is perfect with engine like this, but should I go for it? I am mostly just afraid to miss out on a engine like this.
Hello please may I have the list of chemical and tools used to clean it to look like this
hI guys wonder if you can help, I have Fiat Uno 1100 1999 model.close on 275000 km on the clock. runs like a dream. on the freeway. BUT idles far too high when at stop street or stuck in traffic. was serviced recently and I thought it was the choke that was stuck. Had carb serviced a few months back. guy did a great job. starts easy , dont even need the choke anymore to start it . But none of the mechanics can get the idle down to normal. the last garage said that the carb is " over fuelling ".. or something like that. all I know is its just costing me plenty but Id like to keep the car as a great little " run around ". what does it sound like to you ?
So did you take the engine apart and rebuild it or just clean the outside?.....
Why you not change crankshaft oil seal? Its leaking...
When are you going to post the final video of the swap??
Somewhere along next week, im currently held up by my exams
Damn! All this work and didn't you change the head gasket???
i said the same thing lol 🤦🏻♂️
He can easily do it when it’s back in the car when or if it’s it’s gone tho
refreshing...does that mean cleaning and painting? I was hoping for more of a mechanical rebuild.
@Jeroen it dosent matter how clean it looks , i mean with REFRESH i thought they will open the whole Motor and clean it inside.
Even Worst that he doesn't care about the inviromantal impact of disposing that cleaningspray outside on the lawn.
Thank God this comment is high up, was hoping for a mechanical rebuild as well and this just saved me a few minutes that would have gone wasted
That would be a rebuilding...
And inside ?
The most famous engine in Brazil, AP 1.8.
Eres 1.5 o 1.6
u did great
i had that engine too but in my mk3 golf gl from the 99
Found your videos yesterday, they’re great! Looking at mk1s now, my final goal is a 2.0 with a 1.8 head in a cabrio or 4 door golf
mk4boi I have a 86 2 door
Someone else was waiting for the tear apart too?
this job added 50 hp to the engine
This engine barely had over 50 how from the factory
He didn't add squat, except make the engine look cleaner...not a single performance enhancing job was done to it, and by reusing the old timing belt after slopping chemicals all over it he may well have shortened the life of the engine.
Some of us are broke but still wanna have nice things
@@user-dn6qy1ou1f It had 90hp from factory you dummy
@@warika1208 the original comment flew right over your head.
I don't suppose you have a list of all the cleaning stuff you used? I saw a lot of WD40 but wondered if you used other stuff also? Cheers. Great video btw.
I cant feel how much force your putting on that ratchet, but by the looks of it; looks like alot. And I'm a amazed that little thing can handle it without busting the gears. Seems like a 1/4" ratchet?
Nice outside restauration but what happened inside of the engine ?
you wouldn't happen to have a intake manifold for a carbureted 1.8cc?
How do you remove the hedhehog?
whow where you buy this whrench?, i think if you do the necesary forse can unbolt the head
Why didn’t you changed the runing parts?
I still ride a 1400 version. 240 000km never opened. No oil usage. Recently did the clutch myself. If I were him with the engine out , I would have done the clutch, water pump and head gasket. But first compression test.
That engine with the 1.6 Diésel Crankshaft and 10psi can take 180hp STD
Here in Argentina we have the Volkswagen Gol AP 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0i GTI (GOLF 3 engine)
Its the equivalent of a Civic in USA
Currently we have the fastest Front wheel drive Record in the World by Team Viturro Argentina with a VW GOL G4 1200+hp its a beast (1.8T 20v Jetta engine)
If that cover is right (197k KM) then first things in the list would be the head gasket and main seals, and check for cylinder scoring. Perhaps it needs honing and oversized components.
Keeping the engine clean on the outside and overlooking the inside ain't the way to go. That's how you get catastrophic failures down the road. You'll never know how the cylinder walls looked like.
Not criticizing because we all started trying to make things better with a couple rugs, but that engine got pulled out for a reason.
If you don't have a torque wrench and that's why you decided to stay out of it, your local machine shop can torque the head down for you and typically free of charge if you give them the torque specs and sequence.
13:06 just disassemble all and sandblast!
Great video!
Since you went this far, why not replace the head gasket? Given by the looks, the engine probably has never been opened.
Because he is a stupid Kid.
