    I just watched another LS engine tear down, and they said removing the head bolts in a pattern, was crazy. They removed the middle first then the others. I have always removed them in a reverse pattern myself. I have been watching your videos for a long long time. I really like the way you show tearing down engines, and building them. Thank you for such good videos. I will be getting a used LS engine soon, and building it. Its going to be really fun doing it. I helped another guy do this, and have to agree, the LS engine is really simple.

    Smokey Yunick would be proud , someone like yourself took the time to transition older hotroders like myself to the LS1 , basically because the 70's and 80's the SBC was the engine to work on for the enthusiasts .I am building a 1967 C10 SBSC and wanted to do an LS1 but was unsure of the issues with it. You have concreted my power-train! Thanks! I will post Pics when complete!

      To understand how to do the LS 4 wire setup for the computer, do a youtube search "Project Rowdy" its the best video on here that shows how to wire the solenoids and entire LS wiring.

    I bought 2 6.0 L from the local wrecking yard for $500.00. The guy was glad to get rid of them because he said nobody wanted them. #1, they have cast iron heads, and #2, they have the extended crankshaft. For some reason, GM in 2000 & 2001 made this crankshaft almost a half inch longer with a flat flywheel flexplate to use up an old supply of torque converters. I think the motors are called LQ4. They also make a crankshaft adapter to fit 4.8 & 5.3 to use this flat flexplate. It is useful when adapting an older transmission such as 350 to an LS motor.

    Eagerly waiting for Part 2! I found your channel recently and love it. I have a 72 nova that I was going to do a junkyard 5.3L LM7 rebuild and swap. It is currently running a 396 that I just found out was overbored .090. I hope the 396 lasts, but I'm going to build a 5.3, with minor upgrades, just in case. Problem is ... I have no idea how to! I hope this series continues!!!!

    I've seen heads and things come off of an LS but never watched somebody tear down the shortblock. Glad to see that it's really not complicated at all. It's basically just a newer SBC. Oh also if I remember correctly those reluctor wheels changed from LS1/LS6 to LS2, etc. so if you're swapping one out for another some ECM programming or even an ECM swap may be needed.

      It depends on the year of the engine, they used a 24 tooth wheel til 05 or 06, then they went to a 58 tooth wheel...

I use my snap on cordless ratchet and ill have this thing torn down in less than 10 min. but the info is great and I have no idea why I haven't looked into this before

    I know I'm late to the party here, and iv already watched this video but recently I found a channel that seems to focus on the Chevy l.s., and it's called 'The Driveway Engineer' and this dude is saying with full confidence that even though we're told by G.M. NOT to re use the head bolts, you certainly can. Also, I find this harder to believe, you can re use the frikkin head gaskets as long as they aren't damaged. He's saying that you can strip it down, inspect, slap it together with an appropriate cam, and head work, turbo the sucker and make a thousand horses on the original reciprocating assembly. Check him out, he makes a good case for reusing everything.

    If you were building a 5.3 for boost what year/generation 5.3 would you use? I know there are several different kinds iron vs aluminum blocks and different heads and rod diameter. I'm normally an import guy but I'm starting on a turbo foxbody build next week and wanted to ask someone who obviously knows his stuff. Our power goal is as much as possible, it'll be a shop car we take out for promotions at the track. It'll be stock bottom end with arp fasteners and new head gaskets. Thanks!

    Just bought a Chevy Express 3500 with a 6.0 liter LS Vortec. Very curious as to the inner workings of the engine. I have already gained some respect for the 6.0 as this van weighs in at 9600lbs but the 6.0 launches it onto the freeway like a torque monster rocket!

  • @jaredmayer3960

    Detorque sequence…The only reason to torque them down in a circular pattern is to stretch the head/gasket out to the ends. Coming apart doesn’t matter.

    not too many people use a speed wrench now days. they use their electric or pneumatic impact guns and break shit. the speed wrench is the best way to go, no cross threading, and breakage if fasteners. maybe a bit slower to use hand tools overall, but a safer more sure way to not break shit. good job man.

  • @TheRoguelement

    So the area around the Main's are now like the hemi they are skirted and WOW the 4 bolt main small block now extend all the way to the front & last main cap .. Opps plus six in from the skirt ,,could you imagine the harmonics with the crankshaft spinning at like say 7500 RPM without the skirts bolted directly to the mains ???? Crazy ,,

  • @keithstudly6071
    @keithstudly6071 4 года назад

    Dude! you need a 24 mm socket for that balancer bolt. Also that bolt needs replacement according to Chevy. Do all the lower end bolts need replacement? My experience is DON'T reuse the lifters or the lifter buckets! They were a weak point in early engines and require head removal if anything goes wrong. Do the cylinder walls in the iron blocks have the good wear characteristics of the sleeved aluminum blocks? Is there a good way to bore the block to deal with the crank main bearings? I know these are different from most engines as far as align boring.

      The way I see it is building engines is becoming a lost art and there are few good shops and people who do it. Look into Sam tech or a local community college for an automotive machinist class. Maybe you could be an apprentice but that's a long shot. I took a 2 year class and got 5 ase certifications but then I decided to focus on engine performance, repair, and machining instead of being a tech.

The old 4.3 was a little work horse despite the lack of power people mention, yet they still lug up hills well when loaded. Trip to Payson? Had one not even care when loaded. Old sbc? Also fun. I now have my hands on an LS based engine. They're fascinating. Thanks for the information.

      Guys have reused the head bolts a few times with no problems but for a powethouse engine modded you should always go new.

    On the back of the harmonic balance is a seal. Can you tell me what this seal does as i am just replacing my balancer on a LS3. On the new Dayco balncer that i am installing that seal does not want to sit nicely and should I be reinstalling the new balancer with this on it. Any advice you can give will be appreciated.

    Good real world tech videos. I love'em. Keep the cameras rolling.
    Question, is the bell housing bolt pattern the same on the LS motors as it is on the first and second generation small block ( ..... and big block, and inline sixes) ?
    Thank you

      Yes the LS has the same Bell housing bolt pattern there is one bolt in the center of the block at the top you can just leave that bolt out

    What's a good resource for buying inexpensive used LS1 motors? Do you just go to the junk yards and look for one? I noticed you said you lived in the Phoenix area? I live in SanTan Valley, East Valley area.

    "detorque in sequence." I've never heard about that before.

    I have four builds I need to do. Two are LS motors, one 350 sbc, and a Ford 200 cid inline 6. I would love to see the Ford engine. I can't find anything on them.

    So??? Is block any good after spun bearing? And would damage be worse in a all aluminum 6.0?

    • @Myvintageiron7512
      @Myvintageiron7512  4 года назад

      it depends on how badly it spun it can be repaired but somtimes it's cheaper to get another block

    I'm sure you know the trick, we used to use 3/8 rubber hose on those rod studs...

      Auhh.. LS uses bolts in rods, not studs.

    Was there no ring-groove on the top of the cylinder wall? I didn't see you cut the groove before removing the piston.

      I'm not surprised. Rarely seen even on well kept TBI engines (87-95).

    Sooo... I rewound the video only 7X so that I could see how each of the 8 pistons are removed. I have a 65 Chevy C10 with a 230ci I6. Should I rebuild the 6 or go with an LS? I really really like the 3 on the tree with the Borg Warner automatic over drive. Can that be adapted to the LS?

    5.7 bore and 4.8 stroke for 311 ci and 7000 RPM.

      Everybody does strokers for big cubes. nobody takes different approaches for power anymore.

      I was thinking a 4.8 crank in a 6.0 block. or even a 6.2 block.

      would that lose torque to gain hi rpm horsepower and wouldn't you need a forged assembly do you don't scatter the bottom

    • @DBSSTEELER
      @DBSSTEELER 7 лет назад +1

      You would be surprised how good LS Internals are. You're going to need custom rods and pistons so it goes without saying that you would use forged stuff. But the stock LS cranks routinely handle over 1000 hp reliably. And you're not really going to lose any low-end torque because you are going to be increasing the bore size and upping the compression as well as adding a much more aggressive cam. Search for or 8000 RPM LS here on RUclips to see a Dino video of a LS based de-stroker that car craft Magazine did.
