I've been mesmorised by this piece ever since I first heard Sokolov's interpretation. The way he plays it, with both hands at the same pitch as the original is fiendishly difficult since the hands are constantly clashing (d'Alembert's commonly performed arrangement is easier since in the couplets he separates each hand an octave apart). The articulation also has to be perfect since otherwise repeated notes are lost if you don't release fast enough. I've practised this piece for months in this way and it is a beast - how Sokolov plays it so cleanly at that speed is astonishing!
I've been playing piano for over 20 years and this is the first time I've heard this masterpiece!

I didn't practice anything else than this piece today (for like 3 - 4 hours... maybe 5 I don't know :) ) and.... I did NOT get bored at all !! Such a joy to play..
I am always amazed to see Sokolov with those sausage fingers of his, squeezing them so masterfully on top of each other; a big hand with extraordinary flexibility and agility. Chapeau Maestro Sokolov!
How on earth does he play this with the hands on top of each other all the way through?? I think it was written for an instrument with two keyboards? Such a beautiful performance. ❤️
Written for two keyboards indeed (harpsichord, or two instruments). But it can be done with hands on top - look for Akiko Inao's performance, which shows how to do it :-)
It's easier to do on a grand piano than on an upright piano, because of the shorter response time of repeated notes on a grand piano. The point being: sell your car, your kids, your wife, and go buy a grand piano! 😉
C'est tellement beau le Tic Toc Choc, j'adore beaucoup; J'en fais beaucoup la musique de Couperin que soit à l'orgue, le clavecin, ou de piano. Merci pour ce beau partage et belle émotion pour moi.
It is much more difficult to play on piano, because both hands play in the same register, and it doesn't have two keyboards like most of the harpsichords.
Literally, I was thinking the exact same thing until I happened upon this comment! It’s good that Ravel gave a nod to Couperin through his Le Tombeau de Couperin suite, otherwise I would not have just come across this magnificent composer, who is criminally underrated as I am discovering more and more.

Absolutely exceptional articulation, wonderful and lively interpretation, and fantastic bounce and life! Sokolov is brilliant.

Niemals hat jemand dieses geniale Klavierstück himmlischer gespielt als hier der geniale Sokolov. Ein überirdischer Schimmer im dunklen Weltall.

Wonderful! Could this be Ravel's inspiration for his Toccata?

There is a slight resemblance between Pagnini's first Caprice and this piece, except a half tone down.
