Trop beau, pas de mots pour qualifier cette merveille de poésie. Je découvre de manière plus approfondie la musique de Couperin, un des plus grands compositeurs de l'histoire de la musique

I just sit here listening to this choking with emotion. He really does listens to composer and actually hears him. Otherwise all these colors and dimension and rhythmic fluidity would just not come like that easily. They say he practice like a maniac but this lightness and refinement, that depth are not just lying there to be picked up. One have to get to them and he does. His performance is utterly heartbreakingly moving. This is art.

Not so long ago a critic suggested that it must lonely at the top for Sokolov, and listening to this astonishing performance one really wonders who on earth would be capable to anything equally good on a Concert Grand than this unbelivable delicate, nuanced performance.

There are two "minicycles" within Couperin's "orfres". The firest one, 'les Fastes de la Grande at ancienne Ménestrandise" is clearly caricatural, written in a deliberately simple and quasi popular style. Here, we have almost the opposite with "Les dominos". The dominos allow to hide one's face, and Couperin takes advantage of it to give us some pictures delicately subtle and often ironic of the mannerism and often hypocrisy and the aristocratic society of hi time. Couperin was a sublime composer and a man with a very acute sociological feeling. Indeed, when you understand the titles, what they hint at, and listen this refined music, you realize that we have here an unique masterwork. Schumann will reuse the idea in "Papillons" and "Carnaval", also matserwork, but with a quite different romantic sensitivité nurtured by the great German romantic writers and poets.

I was browsing thru the video list of Sokolov here at youtube and the variety and range of musical periods/composers that he covers is unbelievable. I haven't listened to all but granted he plays them all with great depth and finesse as this one by Couperin, then he must be a formidable pianist indeed. I'm inclined to believe that his brain absorbs music like a sponge. And he plays everything from memory? Amazing!

I gather Sokolov is picky about what he records. But he should have all kinds of Couperin out on CD. He may be even better than Angela Hewitt.
