In this episode, we are going to continue our discussion on Religious OCD or Scrupulosity OCD. Specifically, we are going to discuss the different behavior rituals or compulsions commonly associated with Scrupulosity OCD.
Again, scrupulosity is one of the various subsets of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that can be identified in individuals who experience repetitive, intrusive thoughts (otherwise known as obsessions) surrounding a discrepancy in their religious or moral beliefs.
In this episode, I will be covering how prayer is often used as compulsions and how to start to notice if you are using prayer as a compulsion. Click here to get instant access to the workshop: restoredminds.com/breaking-fr...

This was so good. I have had a suspicion for awhile that my quick prayers in response to anxious thoughts about harm coming to my son have been compulsive. This video really showed me that I should be turning to God out of love instead of fear like I have been. And it’s not bad to pray for my son’s safety, but I’m just keeping myself stuck by doing it compulsively! Thank you

I think my mother had this, even the priest called her overreligious, but noone really helped her. Instead she passes it on to me, and everything I do has a doubting feeling and worry attached to it that it wasn't done right or that I will still get jn trouble with God. It makes God seem less loving etc. I joined another walk in rebellion to my upbringing and felt quite free from that for a few years, but going back to my religious upbringing has brought it back.

My mom suffers from extreme religious OCD and has always forced her religion on me my entire life causing me to have religious trauma and has made me hate anything that's related to Christianity or anything Catholic. I want to support every religion but because of her and what she's done I just can't get myself to be ok with anything that's related to Christianity. Sometimes I feel extremely alone and misunderstood because I can never seem to find anyone with the same problem as me. I want her to see a therapist and hopefully she can open her eyes and see for once what she has done to her daughter but of course she doesn't believe in doctors. even when my own doctors, school counselors and teachers asked my mom to get me a therapist/psychologist cause i seriously need one, she automatically said no because she believes that praying to God will heal me. I can't even have a simple conversation without her mentioning something about God, Jesus, holy Mary or anything of the sort. Now every time I hear someone is Catholic i physically cringe and have a strong opinion on them automatically. I really hate it because i know that not everyone thats catholic is as crazy as my mom is but I can't seem to control it. Now that I think about it I don't think I've ever had a conversation with her without her mentioning God. i hate talking to my mom now and avoid her at all cost because of this. It's really upsetting that I can't have a normal relationship with my mother because of this. i just hope i'm not alone in this and that someone can help me. thank you

Jesus Christ loves you. And like your mom struggles with the fear aspect of the ocd it sounds like, she needs to hear that God is a loving Father and hasn't given her a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.

I have OCD and it has changed subjects multiple times over the years. I've had everything from contamination to intrusive thoughts but now I have scrupulosity which is weird because I am not religious but when I was a kid someone tried to force religious views on me in a negative way that scared me as a kid, and installed guilt in me.. Would this be the reason? Why would I have guilt over things that are not my views?

What about the feeling that your religion is the product of your anxiety and the only way to get rid of the anxiety is to give up your religion? I find myself thinking about all those non-religious people who are doing just fine and think that if I stop caring or learn to hate religion I won't feel the anxiety that comes from thinking about God, practice and morality.

I agree with most of what you're saying. However, i do have my doubts that scrupulosity has nothing to do with religion. Let me give you an example: there are no exact numbers, but the amount of people with scrupulosity in islamic countries seems to be enormous. Many of these people are being raised to believe in the 100% literal truth of the Q uaran and that they should never even dare to ask or doubt anything about it. Just about the same as ' bible belt christianity'. Now if you instil that fear into a child, it is very hard to get it out of him/her on a later age. Some people may create a beatiful kind of spirituality out of it, but others who are more sensible for ' all or nothing' religion, will not be able to live a normal life without constantly questioning their possible sinful natures or thoughts, simply because they have been made so afraid from the beginning of their cultural conditioning.
Just 2 verses from a Quaran Sura that are to be taken dead serious by muslims are (among many more) :
“Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord laden with sin - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.” [Surah Ta Ha 20:74]
"Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, God is ever Exalted in Might and Wise." (Surah An Nisa 4:56)
Now let me ask you: how is a kid ever gonna feel safe if he / she's to take all these texts as the literal ' word of god' , without at a later age many of them developing serious mental health issues, due to the unattainability of all these supposed ' laws and not feeling able to live a free minded human life..?
This is meant as constructive criticism btw, i like your video s a lot.

Maybe it's called prayer which is talking to God. I have experienced this OCD since my early teens in church. I'm in my 40s now and I tell you it takes a toll in your life. It's terrifying to think that one may not be truly saved, or if the experience of my salvation was sincere or not. Or that one may be a tare among the wheat or a goat among the sheep, and the idea of being cast out by God like in Matthew 7:21-23 it kills faith. It's frustrating to see others grow in their faith while you feel that you are dying little by little. All of us who have experienced this can write a book on it. Those who cannot identify with this have no idea and maybe ask themselves why such and such person battles something like this.
