  • In today's video, I go over the importance or regularly black shading or black balancing the RED Komodo and the situations where not doing it regularly throughout a shoot day that is more run and gun can really start to affect your footage more then you think it would. All the example footage was shot on the Sigma 18-35 1.8 with a tiffen blackpromist 1/8 and the night examples were on the helios 44-2.
    I used Dehancer to grade all of todays footage (studio BMPCC 6K & B-roll RED Komodo):
    Use Code "REACHFILMS10" at dehancer.com to get 10% off the full Dehancer license.

    Glad you had a good time while in town. The green tint in the footage looks similar to the Matrix.

    But I thought black shading is related to temperature change ONLY, why merely changing location requires it? It doesn't make sense. Red says you can keep the same black shading for weeks, and certainly not do it several times a day, unless again, you come out of a warm hotel room to freezing outdoors. The only exception is black shading is required after firmware updates. How do you explain what happened to you?

      That is part of the point of this video, showing what happened and maybe someone who has more experience can chime in.

    Damn, the more I learn about Red the less I want to use it. So much work for so little image improvement. This and the time to switch it on (plus reaching temperature) makes it the anti-run and gun camera.

      I just got my Komodo, and love the image, but yes, it's not a run/gun camera. Keeping my 2 blackmagics for that.

    How did you get the anamorphic bokeh with the Sigma 18-35mm? Did you have the aperture custom modded?

      That was the Helios with the oval bokeh and it was a 3D printed insert

    can I leave the lens covered on the Komodo during the black shading?

    • @ReachFilms

      you actually MUST have the lens covered during black shading

      @@by_almo so depending on what I’m filming I do either or. For really important work I put the body cam on the camera and so it that way. For fun stuff I will leave the lens on and it covered

    A little bit of a green tint to it?!! That’s an insane amount of green channel push. This is pretty odd, black shade isn’t for for fixing tint shit, it’s for fixed pattern noise. Btw it looks like you desat your face skin tones little too heavy in post for this video.

    • @ReachFilms
      @ReachFilms  2 года назад

      Yeah man it’s super odd, that’s why I made this video, but at least when I did a black shade it fixed the issue. As far as the skin tones, yeah I noticed that after, I used Dehancer to grade this footage and it’s really more the film stock I chose that had that look. so in today’s video I did a mix of grading it normally and a little bit of dehancer.

    I honestly don't find it a coincidence that no blackshading gives the footage a green tint and this is one of the cameras used to film _The Matrix Resurrections._
    I think your camera found a glitch in the Matrix!

    • @ReachFilms
      @ReachFilms  2 года назад

      We were joking about that too here. It is interesting to see though that it looks like they ditched the green tint in the new movie. At least in the trailer

      @@ReachFilms if you go back and watch _The Matrix Revolutions,_ when the machines used Neo's body to destroy Smith and reboot the Matrix, the Matrix itself seemed to be without that green tint in the final scene with the Oracle, Seraph, Sati, and the Architect in that park.
