Yo! Great video. I am a Komodo owner and love the camera. I actually got one when they first came out and wasn't intending to use it in a "run and gun" style of shooting. I used it recently to film a concert and will probably continue to use it for more shoots like that. I used a Canon R5 as well which took amazing footage but, that Komodo footage is special. BTW, 148 subs? keep going man, you should definitely have more subs than that. Great Channel!
Pretty much the same story for me as well. I bought the Komodo thinking that I would likely only use it for higher end shoots. But I’ve actually found that I have been using it for almost all my run and gun shoots as well. Also thanks!! I really appreciate the encouragement.
the reason it cannot do no crop higher fps is processing and sensor read limitation so its not something that should be a fixable form a firmware update. prores still reads the whole sensor and processes all that data.
The the only difference in prores is the resolution. There is no crop when you are in prores so long as you are not changing your project settings to anything that uses less than than the full 6K sensor. The prores essentially just downsamples that image. So your resolution is just dictating how much you want to downsample.
Hello! I have a coupe of questions. What is the best setting to match 4K 4:3 format? I've been shooting a doc film with my dsmc in that format, and now my Komodo arrived. 2. I noticed that some Komodo cameras have Fan Control setting but my Komodo doesn't have it for some reason. The Fan Control menu is just missing. Do you know anything about it? Thanks!!!
@@moneybay strange. You are up to date. So I don’t see why you wouldn’t have that feature. Perhaps try reinstalling the firmware. I haven’t had this issue on my Komodo with the current firmware installed.
Hi,I hope I can ask something. If you would want to Live stream with Red,can you make Live footage as great colors as Canon mirrorless camera (without editing or Luts) ? Can we actually stream at 1080p 30fps via Obs if we use all you said so we don't have crop? In the end, would you recommend for Live streams Canon Eos R3/R5 or Red? Thank you🙏
You could definitely use it for live streams. You would just need to need to adapt from SDI rather than HDMI. You should be able to get 1080 30fps no problem. You can set the colour profile to Rec 709 in camera or even just to your output display so you wouldn’t have to use LUTs out of camera. I haven’t done much live streaming with it, but everything you are asking about seems pretty doable.
Hello i have a question 😢 why in my Red Raven 4.5K when i shoot on 4.5K 24/25/30/60 whatever and in ProRes setting i can choose only 2K résolution 😅 i have 4.5K pic in a 2K résolution scale 😢 impossible to have 4K resolution in prores sitting / only 2K ( 422 / 422 hq ) i want do 4K video in 4k scale 😢 Thanks
Hey! I haven’t actually gotten my hands on a raven before. So this is just my best guess. I am assuming that it is because it downsampling to prores. Same thing happens with the Komodo but from 6K. You can only shoot 4K prores max, you can’t actually shoot the full 6K unless you are in raw. I am assuming it’s just a scaled down version of this? I could totally be wrong though. Just my best guess!
Good day! Yesterday for the first time in my life I recorded in .r3d 6k format on red komodo. and the resulting files are folders with video files inside. In some cases, folders contain one video, in other cases, folders contain several video files (which have different file sizes). Please tell me why is this happening?
That is totally normal and happens with a lot of other video formats actually. Essentially in order to capture at a certain quality, the camera breaks your recording into smaller pieces. This is also helpful if a recording corrupts, you may still have some of your footage intact. The proper way to process this footage is to go to the media browser window in premiere and import your footage that way. It will read the clips as one unified file, this is the same with Sony’s AVCHD format.
If you are shooting ProRes at 25fps does it crop like it would on higher framerates? or is it downsampled like 24fps? I live in Europe, PAL world. Thanks!
Your project frame rate should always be 23.976 for the most cinematic looking motion. The Komodo actually automatically slows your 50fps footage down to 24 in camera.
@@Ollevisuals yeah, that’s not actually how it works. Pro res downsamples the full sensor settings you have selected, but it still follows the limitations of your RAW capability. So for example, the Komodo allows you to shoot 6K 24 in raw. You can choose to downsample that 6K to 2K in prores, this will not crop in on the sensor because it is just down sampling a raw option that exist. The Komodo does not allow you to shoot 6K 120 in raw. It only allows you to shoot 120 in 2K raw which is cropped. When you downsample that to prores, the crop still exists. There are a lot of misconceptions around this online. But as someone who owns the Komodo and has tested this a lot. That is how it works. You only have the raw crop and frame rate options available. The pro res settings work essentially the same way bringing your footage into media encoder would work, where you can choose to export the video out at a lower resolution, but if the video you brought in has a crop, you can’t undo that crop choosing a lower resolution.
@@KamranJawaid I would say not for HQ, but for LQ it would be. HQ takes almost 3X the space as LQ. But LQ is quite similar space to Prores 4K. Though if you want smoother editing on a Mac prores is obviously easier on your computer. So with longer form content sometimes that is the better option.
At some point a certain segment of the camera handling population got it into their head they’re supposed to pretend they’re hip hop performers and need to gesticulate incessantly. Look at Philip Bloom, Justin Philip, and Gerald Undone. They’re proper dudes and don’t do the hand waving nonsense.
Just in case you didn’t know when you go 6k if you do 2.4:1 you can also do 50p! Just found this out earlier this week.
This is probably the best video on the Komodo I’ve found. Thank you.
Happy to hear!
This was a very useful review. Lots of good information. Thanks so much for your efforts.
Thanks for the comment Jeffrey! Much appreciated :)
I don’t know how you don’t have more subs. Great video man!! I’ve just started using a red myself.
Thanks so much man! It’s slow growth, but it has been awesome to engage with everyone who is subbed already.
Thanks so much for all the info! Cheers from Italy
Thank you for the detailed video!!
My pleasure!!

I would say the best format to match 4:3 would be 16:9 then just crop in post. For your second question, what firmware are you on.

I saw a video where the komodo didnt crop in prores 120fps.. So now in September 2022, is it still cropping in 120fps prores?
No 120 has always has had a crop. But it can shoot up to 50 with no crop.

When you shoot pro res 4K 60 there will be. If you bump down to 50fps in widescreen you lose the crop.
