Part of the reason why “Don Quixote” is one of the best selling book of all time is due to the fact it has become a staple in most school academies for students to read. Even though I am a born New Yorker but at a young age I came to Costa Rica and attended school over here. For 10th and 11th graders it’s mandatory for us to read “Don Quixote”. Honestly I read the entire thing and this novel is both intriguing and entertaining but with a twist of what is reality and what isn’t? It makes me think on a deeper level. Was Don Quixote a mad man or a man who truly experienced his journey of struggles and became a hero? It’s a classic with a deep meaning and everyone at least once in their lifetime should read this story.
Yeah they clearly weren't including religious works, because the Bible is #1. The Book of Mormon would have been between Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings.
Interesting. No Dostoevsky. Hard to trust a list without him on it. Though, this list isn't all too surprising. It's all about marketability, as well as likability. Actually, Don Quixpte seems like a weird one to be even on this list, let alone number one. Makes me think most of those sales must be for schools. I don't really remember Don Quixote but, I do remember it being a bit like Shakespeare and hard to read. I guess there may be better translations, or perhaps it's fame has led it to being widely bought by literary fanatics. Though, I wouldn't think there's that many people out there that even care about classical literature. Hell, Shakespeare's not even on here. I hope my reread of this classic doesn't disappoint. I have it on my shelf but, I'm a bit nervous to revisit it. Maybe I just need to crack that puppy open and check her out. I think that's what I'll do.

If I had to guess the list was excluding religious works. Besides that there are different versions to consider and how far back detailed sales records for it goes.
Those who say, "where is the Quran?". The Quran is given as a gift for free to Muslims and non Muslims so it can't be on a list of "The best selling books". But it's definitely one of the most read. I mean 200,000,000 people worldwide have memorized it.
I am fairly certain there are copies to be bought but I think the list precluded religious texts either way. The Bible would be destroying the competition outside of maybe the Quran.
I'm so happy that with Cervantes a true classic won this race - whats about the bible?
No way the hungry caterpillar is so low on the list.

Literally In the whole video I was just searching for Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment "
Shakespeare wrote plays. Is there a big book market for plays? Besides by Shakespeare what plays are people picking up at the book store?
OMG, Don Quijote like Shakespeare? Don Quixote is the crowning work of literature, in what fucking world u live, now days the people dont care about clasics, but it hv been one of the most important books in the history
@@jacobflematti3325 Love my Dostoevsky! In my opinion, the greatest novelist. But bestselling os a different parameter.
Harry Potter performance shows how big of a cultural event it was since the higher entries are far older books with more years to sell. Curious to see if it would dethrone Don Quijote in the same time span.
I remember buying the last two HP books in english because some clever folks in france sold them here before the translation was available, around a month after

Not odd. We just have no reliable source for sales history when it comes to the Bible.

@@charcolew But there are multiple problems. Not only is there a lacking reliable source for the sales, it is also given as a gift rather than for sale. And it is also technically a collection of books rather than 1 book on itself.

Because no one buys those books. They just watched the show, as that’s where all the nudity and mind numbing special effects were.
@DovahFett while the show is certainly not as good in terms of plot as the book, it's still really good. I am going to say it's one of the best series ever created. It's absolutely not about nudity, lol. Special effects are always good and entertaining, but those sperial efects are worth nothing if the plot and/or actors is sнıt. What about the Bible? I mean, that book has been in libraries for like centuries or something, no?
If I had to guess the list was excluding religious works. Besides that there are different versions to consider and how far back detailed sales records for it goes.
Шерлок Холмс?
Those who say, "where is the Quran?". The Quran is given as a gift for free to Muslims and non Muslims so it can't be on a list of "The best selling books". But it's definitely one of the most read. I mean 200,000,000 people worldwide have memorized it.
I am fairly certain there are copies to be bought but I think the list precluded religious texts either way. The Bible would be destroying the competition outside of maybe the Quran. Not particularly religious but well it is a work that in one form or the other has been around for maybe a little under 2000 years depending when all the the New Testament got recorded. Though who knows when you could actually track anything like a sales record for either works.

@@ravenclaw_ramen As you already know, I'm saying that this, being a list of best selling books, is based on how well and for how long they were sold, not only their subjective quality. This was a statement to which you appeared to agree while saying you don't care. Since the proposition was an agreed fact, I'm saying that you are choosing to ignore reality, which is completely up to you. If you'd like to re-examine the original fact, feel free to ask, but my point has moved on from the disproportionate apparent popularity of any particular book or specific writer, to the fact that you are choosing, by your own admission, to live in a fictional reality and therefore your opinions about actual reality are invalid.
