I prefer Re:Zero over Mushoku Tensei since I read the Re:Zero web novel. Season 3 is going to be amazing animated, especially arc 6. Subaru is my #1 favorite fictional character, and I doubt it’ll change for a long time. I’m planning on reading the light novels for Mushoku Tensei after season 2 part 2 finishes. Going to be interesting to see which story I like more after I read the novels for MT.

I hope you enjoy MT when you get to reading it. It's my second favorite LN ever, just behind the Toaru series. I just started Re:Zero last week so I'm not far into it, but I've been loving it so far.

@@blasiensteinw3676 Have fun with Re:Zero. Subaru is really flawed and annoying at the start, but develops massively throughout the anime. Even if it’s annoying to see Subaru act the way he does, stick through it, and Subaru becomes an amazing character and a completely different person at the end of season 2. Novel Subaru is even better, especially after arc 6, which will be covered in season 3.
Can’t wait to read Mushoku Tensei once part 2 ends. Going to be fun.

I prefer Re Zero, I will admit that I didn’t finish the Mushoku tensei novels but i just really didn’t like Rudy that much. His character development was well written i cant deny that, but even with him becoming better, I cant like him at all. And i got spoiled for what happens later on, which is what made me really not want to read. Not because it was spoiled, but because no matter what explanation they gave, i wouldn’t like it. It has to do with the romance aspect, i didn’t like what they did. Maybe Im being stubborn but i really hate that shit, especially in anime like this. Cuz its so hard to not make it seem like its pandering the audience. And before anyone tells me re zero is doing the same shit, its not and please dont spoil anything under my comment. I realize wgat you mean, but the romance stuff has not concluded yet in re zero. I will change my mind if it does but just because says something doesnt mean it will happen. Which is especially true for re zero, subaru says alot of shit that he either gets a reality check for or it happens the opposite of how he expects it.
Why I prefer Re Zero is because i like the characters and setting way more. The themes are everything I like in a story, and there is something so satisfying about seeing the the story arcs come together in the end. Seeing everything being confusing but slowly seeing it all come together is so perfectly done. And the way the author can perfectly mix in the character development and motivations to make it in an even better experience. Even with it looping, you’re always excited to keep reading.
Subaru being weak does not matter at all, its part of makes re zero so interesting. Hes weak and has to figure stuff out in a different way. It would be way more boring otherwise, its why i think its stupid when people say he can be replaced or should be stronger. Thats completely missing the point.
And this is just a personal preference but i dont like all the echhi jokes and stupid shit Rudy does, that shit never makes me laugh. I have always felt this, i have watched anime for 10+ years and it always puts me off. Rudy does it so much and its done as a joke so often. And it doesn’t stop even in the later parts, Re Zero doesn’t do the same shit. Subaru isnt groping people for comedic affect every episode. Sometimes i can ignore it, like monogatari. But tbh that shit always grosses me out, especially when its characters that are just straight up little girls. Call me whatever you like idc, its a personal preference. I should be allowed to dislike it, just like how someone is allowed to think its funny or can ignore it.
So thats why i prefer re zero. Its constantly improved and gotten better. The story is so well put together, and Subaru continuously is able to be a better protagonist. Every arc he has more and more added to him. This next season does so much for his character. And season 2 already made him such a good mc

The reason a lot of people don't know whether re zero's side characters are good or not is because every character in re zero has an interplay with the narrator, their thoughts and the world around them going on, they all hide their true emotions at points pivotal to them because of how the brutal world has taught them to survive. To the point they fool themselves about how they feel.
You get a lot of half finished thoughts and words, people still processing what they did and thought in past moments so us not really feeling we understand them, which can come across as them not being fleshed out, is just us actually feeling how they do. A lot of people like Rudy's self awareness and reflection in the novels through internal dialogue from what I saw online, but re zero does the opposite for the exact same realism as its goal, except I think it's more realistic not less.
Knowing yourself is a big theme throughout re zero, in many character arcs (without actually spoiling I can say this applies to characters such as Subaru, Emilia, Roswaal, Echidna, Beatrice, Garfiel, Otto, Petelgeuse, Ram, Julius, Wilhelm and many more! They all have either long chapters of their own and/or just as much presented in side story collections and novels) and you don't realise that they've been fleshed out and telling you about them all along, because again like in my opinion most people in the world they don't actually understand why they do the things they do. That's even one of Echidna's, Minerva's and more witches' biggest fixations because they lost their humanity somewhere and not understanding others yet wanting to do good anyway defined them.
So yeah tldr re zero characters are fleshed out more through their internal struggles and contradictions without having self awareness(arc 3's theme in Tappei's afterwords) which is usually how we learn about characters in writing with 1st person or biased 3rd person narration but not actually something most people have much of.

I have to personally say Re:zero but I'm from a position of reading Re:zero and only watching mushoku.
With the pride if point at the start I wanted to add that the idea is him being to prideful to ask for help but also to prideful to back off. There is also the fact that the overall argument wasn't too clear in terms of the conversation, personally I would use the point to explain how despite return by death being a strong ability, Subaru isn't safe mentally and can follow the wrong path as his sense of wright from wrong is warped meaning he will chase a different path to what would conventionally be right or what he would have initially wanted.
There is also the fact that despite return by death there are still big threats such as loosing others (ie rem), or something similar to the bet with roswaal in season 2 as well as events in other if stories and stuff that happens later that I won't specify.
I also wanted to quickly add that despite liking the anime it is pretty sad that it cuts out pretty much all of the world building and foreshadowing present in the web novel which is very important so despite being confident most of it will come up in the anime at a later date it kind of ruins the ability to theory craft and results in a loss of a lot of the anticipation for exploration, as a small taste without spoilers there is information on how the literal basic level of physics work differently, such a the strength of gravity is different, and the planet not even being a globe; as well as a lot more development on people and even nations including another knight from season one being a lot more interesting and I'm still pretty shocked they cut his background out.
Personally I love the characters in both series but they are very different so I can't really pick one over the other except for the fact that I feel more connected with those in Re:zero as I've experienced more of their story.
Finally in the anime Subaru has had no time to improve in terms of combat, when repeating in the mansion he can learn about the world as he can retain knowledge but any work on his body is lost, combine this with the fact that both season one and two consist of non stop events with near to no break after he appears. This is important as Subaru does grow a lot when he eventually has some time but this is still a pretty short period and most of his strength still comes from direct combat and improving in the moment rather than training to be really strong over a long period. On top of this it would be impossible to make his body as strong as anyone born in lugunica as they are generally just build different, he can't gain divine blessings as they are granted at birth, and he has broken his gate as shown in season two so he can't use magic from his own body.
I also personally love the power system, just wish that it was properly explored in the anime outside of only explaining the gate.
This is very biased and I definitely plan to read mushoku as I've really enjoyed the anime.

The two stories really can't be compared as they are very different other than the fact that they are isekai, The greatest difference between the two is that, Mushoku tensei show the uprising of the main character while Re:zero shows the downfall.
but, i really gotta say, but Mushoku Tensei is just better in almost all places:
Rudeus as a main character is better, they not only show his growth but also shows his mind and his self image changing throughout the story, he was traumatized by his bullies basically left in a state where he feared stepping outside out of humiliation. After reincarnation, the story shows him step out of his boundaries and start living a proper life as a redemption to his past life.
The World building is just too good in Mushoku Tensei, the greatest i've ever seen, even the smallest details might turn into the greatest plot point in this story, the smallest, least important actions the main character did have influenced other characters, and introduced others (For example, the roxy doll, was almost seen as a useless thing to the plot, but because it was sold and circulated around, that Rudeus ended up getting saved in shirone.). The world is very well thought out so much so that re:zero just can't compare.
Almost all side characters are important in some way, They have been designed in a way that they somehow influence the story, they are well designed and consistent to the plot and the events going around the mushoku tensei universe.
as for future potential, mushoku tensei (LN) is over so there is no more potential, but the anime is still ongoing and it has side stories and games the have extra content to the story, Re:zero according to sources is still very far from being complete so it still has potential to defeat Mushoku, only thing we can do is wait.

They show Subaru’s growth throughout the entirety of rezero s2 ep 4 one of the main points was how without noticing Subaru had started to change as a person and was happier. His dynamics with the villains and characters all have meaning besides them just being adversaries. The series goes into great detail explaining the characters motivations and thoughts at the time of events. And to say that rezero can’t compare in terms of worldbuilding is a straight up lie. One of the most important part of rezero besides the characters and dynamics is the worldbuilding. I will admit this wasn’t stressed enough in the anime but the novels explain a lot of history, magic system, dialects, country history and details.

For me, as a novel reader, it's Mushoku Tensei. The story just sucked me right in and I could not stop reading once I got started.
Part of that might be the first person perspective vs third person perspective. I always find myself far more invested in stories that use the former.
In the end it's just personal preference, even though I can tell Rezero is a well written story it seems convoluted or overly detailed at times. It's pretty much a mystery disguised as an isekai, and I'm not really into that genre.
The magic/power system practically requires studying to properly understand. Which I bet I would have loved if I was more invested to begin with, but since I'm not it's confusing instead.
Also the hacks annoy me. The story is riddled with powers that are so strong they're unbeatable without deep insight into how it functions. Which results in Subaru dying untill he figures out the conditions then dying some more to figure out how to use his newfound knowledge.

    Mushoku tensei >>> rezero.
And rudeus is a much better mc. Being powerless doesn't instantly mean they are better character than the other. And even if you say rudeus is an op or strong mc. It's not really the strength he is pursuing, its just he wants to live his second life to the fullest. There are many hardships that rudeus power/strength alone can't do to help him. Examples are eris abandoning him which cause him trauma and him battling against his old disgusting self. He wanted to change so easily but its not that easy.
Subaru's as a character is replaceable. Put eren to subaru's spot and it will click. Its the plot that drives rezero. And subaru's development isn't organic. Its forced. Throug p*rn suffering, he was able to make himself bettercand develop as a character, which is cheap. Character development through forced repetitive suffering is just inorganic and not genuine.
I think the strong points of rezero is on its plot. But characters, protagonist, world building, themes goes to mushoku tensei. Not only that it has better magic system and even sword system. Rezero power system is a mess, the rbd is so repititve that the whole story relies on rewinding things jusy for shock value. It has little to no stakes, the worst thing that happen is only rem being forgotten. and the magic system is a mess, with the authority and such which is plot convenient for the author to make an easy plot and story.

I simply can not agree. Every single point is just wrong to me. It's understandable, after all Re:Zero pretends to be about overarching plot when in actuality it's about emotional connections between people and characters.
      > Subaru's as a character is replaceable
I'm sorry what? Plot is happening entirly because of how flawed Subaru is. A shut-in. Arrogant. Self-loathing. But to my knowledge every single MC that is remotly looks like Subaru (including Rudeus) gone a power fantasy route.
      >And subaru's development isn't organic. Its forced
HUHH??? I'm sorry but how is it forced? Every step of the way was very hard for his character because of how arrogant and prideful he is. He constantly refused to change and was snapped back to reality by his deaths. People don't change overnight. And so Subaru does not change over 1 episode either. Every step of the way he learns a little lesson about how he should treat himself and people around him in a healthy way (though using gruesome means, Tappei loves making him suffer, it's understandable if it's not your cup of tea). If you look even at the start and end of first season Subaru went a pretty long way.
      > I think the strong points of rezero is on its plot.
I disagree. Re:Zero is a character study story through and through. Re:Zero is good at pretending to be about plot tho! If anything Mushoku is actually has better world building. Mushoku goes full fantasy route, while Re:Zero takes more Eldritch/Lovecraftian approach. It makes sense that Mushoku's world would be more flashed out.
      > Rezero power system is a mess
      yeah because it's not a power fantasy/shonen I guess.
      > plot convenient for the author to make an easy plot and story
What author going to write power system that makes writing their story harder? I don't get it. Moreover the main plot point of the magic system in Re:Zero is that Subaru can not use it pretty much.
Don't get me wrong Mushoku is a solid anime. But arguing that Subaru character is inferior to Rudeus is just delusional. Rudes does not go through much development at all. The only real development I saw is his fear of getting out of the house and it was butchered completly. It was over in like single episode. He just goes out and he's fine afterwards. A 2 scenes of him being scared and 1 flashback. Don't get me wrong it's a solid plot point but saying that is somehow superior to how Subaru rises and falls every arc is just stupid.
For all the story of Mushoku Tensei Rudeus stays almost the same as he was before his life. Rudeus have no redeeming qualities besides being shy and "knowing his place". Along the story Rudeus either:
gains some power (because of hitogami, oh no wait is this conviniet plot point for the author? I thought that's a no no in your book)
sad because of some stupid misunderstanding
      grooming children
And ooh boy don't get me started on how Rudeus is grooming children. Damn they hinted in first episode he was jacking off to a child porn! After being reincarnated and given second chance instead of redeeming himself he's just falls further. He's over 40 but his contant goal is "getting to do IT" with every single child of his biological age that comes around. And what a pity too, if author decided to explore this theme at least make it about how Rudeus is struggling with his sexual kinks it would be 1000 times better. But no every single gross moment is written off as a joke.
I get it anime can do some wild stuff, and you can enjoy watching it either way no matter how irredemable character is. And Mushoku Tense is a good anime/manga/LN read and in ways it might be even better then Re:Zero (For me it's not the case but I can see how people enjoy Mushoku Tensei more and it's fair).
But Subaru and his character arc and characters in general is Re:Zero's strongest suit. And so I believe Subaru is better character and protagonist then Rudeus
sorry had to get that long ass post out there
